After almost sixty years working as a photographer I much prefer spending my time doing camera work than messing around learning computer stuff. There's a host of things to learn in switching from film to digital, which is fine - I'm amazed at what I can do with a Nikon D810 compared to my old F5 - but there is no end to the new stuff you have to learn to keep up. Having become somewhat fluent in Lr Classic, there is no way in hell I want to screw around with a whole gaggle of new rules, terminology and routines because some engineers at Adobe had brain storm. I would rather stand with my camera on a tripod in the rain, snow, or come what may, than sit staring at a monitor. That is why I appreciate these videos. They're all well done and very useful. Thanks.

Great video; thanks! Though I am a new user of Lightroom, I am a software industry professional. I suspect that reason for the shortcut changes is because Adobe feels the "cloud version" choices are more intuitive. i.e. 'z' and 'x' are adjacent on the keyboard. It is difficult for a vender to change operation on an existing product because the installed base will complain. However, if Adobe creates a new version, they are free to make changes as they see fit. I suspect another issue Adobe wanted to change was the "modal" natural of Classic: 'Library,' 'Develop,' ... This type of software program structure is usually undesireable. Another important constraint is the need for consistancy across platforms: Windows, iPhone, Android, etc. It's interesting to see Adobe's product name choices. Analogous to what happened with "Coke," I suspect that they will eventually sunset "Lightroom Classic."

When you talked about virtual images I think you didn't mention a new Lightroom CC feature called Versions which does almost the same thing. It stores multiple processing steps into versions which you can name and quickly swap between (or return to the original version).

I found this very informative and cleared up a lot of confusion. Essentially the Classic version is ONLY for desktop where the cloud version is for either desktop of smart device. It is like having 2 different programs - not good. I use both but find I hardly use the cloud version on my iPad. What I would like to do is have the opportunity to import to the cloud version on my iPad and then transfer or move them to Classic from the cloud but this does not happen or at least I have not worked it out yet. Is it even possible?

Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed editing images in Lightroom on my iPad on a holiday earlier this year, the lack of functionality and the confusion in the folder hierarchy when the images synced back to Classic means I will be sticking with the latter for the foreseeable future.

Hi Anthony, I know that this video is old, but I just like to note that most missing feature in Cloud Lightroom for me is the absence of range masks in gradient, brush etc tools. I have no idea why it was so difficult to adobe to introduce it here as well...

Thanks Anthony for this very informative video. I only use the cloud version of Lightroom in my phone or iPad, when travelling, or else if I am out and want to take a photograph, but only have my phone with me, then when I’m home again, I do any further processing in LR Classic. Some of the differences are really irritating, especially the lack of ability in LR Cloud version to duplicate an image or make a virtual copy. I don’t understand the reason why the two have to be different. I would prefer Adobe to just make a mobile/cloud version of Classic, with the same, identical functionality and same look and feel as Classic, but on a mobile device.
@kathleendunleavy1632 жыл бұрын
The only reason I am considering Lightroom CC is that all of my pictures will be stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any location, but I dont know if I understand the real pros and cons because there are some functions that the Classic version has that have been cut out of the Cloud version. Also, I am not clear if I can have a current copy of the entire photo set updated locally so if my internet connection went out I could still work on my files, and then when the connection came back up the local machine automatically coordinates with the master cloud set, so basically I would have a master set in the cloud and then local sets in my two other locations. Is this even possible? I have looked up the various articles to see if I can make a list of the pros and cons of the cloud version versus the classic version. One concern I have is speed, and how fast search and other functions work, because if the search functions take place in the cloud, I am not sure how the internet connections can handle all that data . Thoughts?

Hi Anthony. I have only used LR Cloud version a couple of times for a small number of images. I do 99% of my editing on my home desktop system and if I travel I usually have my laptop. I might do edits on the laptop in LR Classic and then just import from that catalog when I get home. Last year my wife and I did a 4 day trip to Cancun for some R&R and as far as electronics I only took a Samsung tablet instead of the laptop and I did a few edits on LR Cloud but that's about it. If I ever want to edit cell phone images I use Snapseed. So I guess I don't fit the profile that Adobe is after for the cloud market. I also don't think a tablet, even an iPad Pro has a decent calibrated screen like my home system's 4K monitors do.

I don't use the cloud version because I don't edit on other devices such as Lightroom on my iPad. A little confusion...If I "Add" photos to the cloud from my hard drive they do stay on the hard drive but they also get added at full size to the cloud. I uploaded a folder of images from my hard drive and my 20gb Adobe Photography plan increased by 6gb due to that folder being added (since deleted). However if I created a collection in LR Classic that 6gb of photos would barely change the space used in the cloud because they're not added as full size images.

One really cool feature I found is that if you drop the images you have in a collection, you can sync that individual collection to the cloud and you can edit on the go. When you don't want them on the could, you just unsync them. The actual file still stays on your computer.

With 45 to 60mp cameras the cloud version gets pretty expensive. A 1tb folder of photos is not that big if you keep all your images and it fills up the cloud fast. I hate the cloud storage charges and if you don't pay all your images are gone

There is a feature i found that allows you to sync collections to the cloud so you can edit on the go. It will upload them to Adobe cloud and you can edit them. You can then unsync them and they will be removed from the cloud, but the actual file will stay on your computer.

Hi, I think what you are referring to here is the discrepancies in colours between different display (eg. Laptop vs your iPad). This has to do with colour accuracy, and screen colour calibration. This is a rly troublesome matter for me as well, as i often ended up not knowing which displays is the "real/correct" one. But after doing much research, i have came to realise that if you go with apple products, they are all VERY accurate and they look identical across all apple devices. Whereas if you use Android or Windows, you have to probably buy an expensive monitor and do hardware calibration using tools like those from the brand "Spyder". Hope this helps!!:)

Clear that the new version of Lightroom is more for 'new' users than the old version of Lightroom Classic. The real question is whether or not there are things that you cannot do between the two products. Every video I've seen thus far seems to suggest that the functionality is largely the same, but there are some usability differences. Certainly the new Lightroom hides a LOT of complexity from users and appears to be more user friendly for people that haven't been using Lightroom for a decade - but otherwise it's the same stuff.

Lightroom CC is the phone app dumbed down version of LR. Its bad and they should feel bad. Companies need to learn that people want to own things. We want things to be under our control when we are doing work. Having a backup to the cloud is great, but thats for archival. We need our own local stuff to control and manage. What im hoping is that the DaVinci Resolve people make a LR & PS competitor. Ill say goodbye to LR.

Recently, I made the decision to start using Lightroom. Since I'm a mac user, I went to the App Store to see whether I could get it there. They did, so I downloaded it. Then when I started to use it, I realized it was different from all the youtube videos I had seen. So I called Adobe to chat. All I wanted to find out was what version I had downloaded. They gave me the royal run around. I started with sales and they didn't want to address my question so they passed me off to tech. Long delays waiting for someone to chat. Each time I was passed off, I had to explain what I wanted all over again. I guess they are not equipped to see the chat string. First, Tech got concerned about whether I was registered or not. Then when they finally got around to addressing my question, they suggested I drop the Mac App Store version and log in to the Adobe site to download their version. They said wait and they would send me the url for that but they never did send it so after waiting for over an hour, I logged off the chat. Later when I returned to my email account, there was an email from Adobe asking me why I had logged off. Now, a day later, I go back to youtube to see if I can find an answer to my question. Anthony, your video is the first that actually explains what I have downloaded. But, I have a question. What manual should I buy to learn how to use what I guess is Lightroom CC or the cloud version. Also, I keep seeing references to the web browser version. Are we talking about the same thing or are these separate versions?
