I've adopted something I learned from you that has been surprisingly helpful ☺️ I was so skeptical at the beginning too. It is the practice of tracking the clothing I wear. I use pen and paper as not organized enough for fancy spreadsheets. Ppl I've mentioned it too are all " I don't need to do that, I know what my most worn clothing items are." I want to say DO YOU? For real? Because I have to say a couple things have really surprised me so far. It's also made it easier to take some items out of my closet and off my list. And realize...there's not going to be enough time this year to wear everything more than once...so I really don't need to buy more. I need to manage better.

I can relate to “not settling”. I’ve made this mistake many times 🤦🏼‍♀️. One thing I’ve also done is rearrange my closet so the items I was not reaching for are easier to access and for me to see. That way they are harder to be overlooked and I will try to wear them more! Great video and great to see you “mature” since the early days of your videos. It’s nice to be debt free!!!! You’re such an inspiration to so many 🤩!

Creating the opportunity to style really spoke to me. I’m a retiree and don’t have a lot of call to dress up, so whenever I am meeting someone for coffee, breakfast or lunch or even having a quick meal out with hubby at local place, I have started to incorporate my jewelry, scarves and other dressier pieces that I don’t usually wear. Even if I get out of them and put them away for the rest of the day, it’s nice to take them out for spin.

I retired in July, too. I change out sleep clothes first thing into something I would go out to wear (not comfort sweatpants or slouchy tee). It makes me feel more alive and utilize my extensive wardrobe collection. I have been thinking about part timing in retail (have never worked retail) just to have a reason to wear my clothes, accessories, and shoes.

I promised myself at the beginning of the year to take out items I have never worn or not worn in years and find ways to wear them. The result was that I found out why I had never worn them in years: A. The colour didn't suit me and/or the item didn't work with anything else in my closet, B: I felt uncomfortable in it (e.g. fiddling aroung to make shoulders stay in place), C: The fabric was itchy or somehow uncomfortable or D: After years of not wearing the item I no longer had opportunities to wear it (way to dressy due to location or lack of events). At least I came to know what not to buy in the future.

Such helpful advice! Loved the 'not settling for the dupe' part. Decluttering and organization are a MUST. Keeping a photo record of the clothes we already own can be super helpful as well. When you go to a store and feel temped, you can check your phone for the items you already have so as not to get duplicates. This can be time consuming if you have many items, but very worth it. 👌😊

The one thing that helped me to declutter my closet and get rid of the guilt for buying things I did not wear was learning to dress for my body type including how to choose patterns that flatter me. Understanding my body type also helped me stay within those boundaries when I go shopping for an item i need. It keeps me from bringing fast fashion items that look cute but don't suit my body. Knowing my color pallette helps too to stay away from purchasing things that I know now I won't wear. I now understand why I was not wearing the mounds of clothes in my closet and drawers. I can admire clothes and fashion and really like a certain color but in most cases it won't be a good fit for me. I now appreciate and understand what works for me and truly feel good about the pieces I have. I now have a limited amount of clothes but its a good working amount in my closet where everything gets used. I no longer throw away my money with everything that catches my eye. It makes it easy to walk out of a store with nothing in my hands.
@Biancaleigh693
@Biancaleigh693 Жыл бұрын
This is me to a T. Once I understood my body type. Body essence. Colour palate. I now have a much more cohesive wardrobe where I wear most of my clothes. 3-5 items have been ignored but that's because they are summer clothes and haven't had much opportunity to wear or not super appropriate for where I have been going. This is just a super helpful tip

Similar to your wish list idea, I add things to cart and don’t check out right away. That way it gives me time to think about it and most often then not I end up removing them and not purchasing.

#9 is the one I am currently learning, too! As I have gotten older, I see that I actually like some of those items better than the newer ones I have added. However, as a warning… shopped my closet the other day as I got dressed on a cooler morning. Put on a biker jacket made of wool with “leather” trim, not realizing the trim had deteriorated and rubbed off in places! Since it was not great light in my closet, and it was a busy day in meetings, I did not see the wear and wore the jacket all day. Argh. Embarrassed. Good intentions, but needed to have heeded #7: clothing maintenance!

I resonate with all these issues and love your vlogs. One “fixation” I have is wearing something new. For example, I searched high and low for the perfect white button down shirt for me (texture, warm white, sleeve length, etc.) only to have yet to wear it? Why? Because I might dirty it and then what do I do? I’ll never find another one like it! I really wanted to wear it to a nice dinner out last week but it was an Italian restaurant and all I could envision was “that” red stain on my new shirt. I’m telling you I have this problem with other new clothes that I have in my closet waiting to be incorporated with other items I wear regularly. Do you have any advice for me? Perhaps others have this same issue…thank you 🙏

Omggg I FEEL that! I’ll def talk more about this in a vlog - but i think the key is to let that go and wear it! We spent so much time, money and effort finding the perfect, so it’s meant to be worn! Tide sticks are also key for THAT stain! 🍝

Clothing will degrade over time, regardless. The fibers will begin to break down whether you wear it or not. I experience the same hesitation about keeping it for "later". So I remind myself that my goal is to wear the object as many times as possible before it degrades. If it gets ruined, then at least it went out serving it's purpose.

@@LapisLazuli155 This is an interesting viewpoint and one I will try hard to adopt. Wow, how did clothes become so complicated? When I was working I never gave any of this a thought because, of course, I had to dress for my work day every day. But now having been retired almost a decade and with a couple of years of no where to go, it just feels confusing and overwhelming. I’m just trying to figure it all out…

Thank you so much for these ideas. The wishlist is such a good way to cool one's heels for a while after that initial impulse!! Another thing I realized: I am ALWAYS so much happier for a longer period of time after getting rid of things than I am after buying things. The feeling after buying impulsively is so fleetingl. I enjoy keeping my closet to only items I can see and will definitely wear that season. I don't store things out of sight because that creates problems too. I just switch everything from one side of the closet to the other. Enjoying your videos!

Separating hard winter/summer pieces has really helped. In the off season I can step back and look at what I really wore, what I really liked, and is there a theme in my clothing that carries over season to season? I’ve found in the summer I like solid pants and printed tops, in the winter I like textured/patterned bottoms and plain tops. Or I pair patterned sweaters with plain bottoms. I also like wearing white on bottom more in the summer and white on top more in the winter. My summer colors heavily lean to pinks and nudes, my winter colors lean heavily to browns and reds. I like separating my closet by season because it gives me breathing time to think about what I want in rotation and what I don’t want.

Yes. Not settling for the cheaper option just because it's cheaper and creating the opportunity to wear my nicer stuff. I always had 'my good stuff' that i saved for occasions but as a result they weren't getting the love, it's better just to incorporate them as much as possible or they're just taking up space. That's what I'm working on this year now that lockdowns are over.

My biggest current struggle is FOMO. I saw a bag on eBay that I have wanted for months and finally it came up. They don't make it anymore and it was a great price so when I saw it I snapped it up; and that was soon followed by intense buyers remorse as I had been doing fairly well with curbing my spending. It's hard to navigate those "grey areas" - especially when a piece is rare or hard to find.

I wear jeans twice before I wash them. I'm too sweaty of a person to let it go longer than that LOL I hang that pair on the back of my closet door right where I can see it so that I wear it again ASAP. Sometimes that means wearing the same jeans two days in a row but I really don't care I just pick out two different tops. Hope that helps

jeans usually don’t have a smell to them even after you’ve worn them a few times (depends on the fabric ofc)! so you can just fold them back up and put them with the others. if it helps and you have the space you can have both a little folded pile of clean and worn :)

You can spray them with cheap (but odorless) vodka. The smell evaporates quickly, and it removes odors. This is an old theater trick, because you cannot wash all components of a costume between each performance. Do a test patch on an inconspicuous area first, just to be safe.

Yes, of course, create and embrace every opportunity. Even going for coffee is a time to embrace - It's a part of your day - that makes it a special enough occasion on its own. I dress for comfort firstly which sort of endears me to all my wardrobe as I remember been comfortable in them - and no master what the outfit - if you don't feel that level of comfort - the style pales in comparison.

I actually really like looking after my clothes, even the simple things like washing and doing a bit of ironing. And then making that sweater, like you say, look beautiful again because you invest in a battery-operated, $20 Conair defuzzer.

I have a sort of modified approach to not getting a dupe of what I really want, which is to wait until I can find it second hand. Brands I've "stalked" second hand include Aspiral of London and Polene bags, Sezane sweaters and blouses, and most anything by Lafayette 148 NY Petite. I've found that in most cases if I search long enough, the exact item I want will show up. This has the added bonus of being a built-in time delay.

The fixations part is still a struggle for me. Doesn't help that for a long time I was overly strict on buying clothes, so there was a period where I did need to build up my wardrobe a bit. But the pendulum has now swung to where I don't need to be adding anymore. I like your idea of using outfit inspirations on places like Pinterest to re-create. I think that would help me focus more on the great stuff I have rather than fixating outside my wardrobe on what else I could bring in.

I feel this comment to my core. 😅 I really fixated on a cream cardigan that I tried on in Nordstrom. I searched for it on Poshmark. I kept hesitating on buying because of the price point. I finally just told myself “You have a cardigan in a similar color” and while I was trying to convince myself reasons to buy it, I sat on it for awhile and eventually forgot about it. I still want it lol but I won’t buy it until the one I’m currently wearing gives out on me. It helps to remind myself that this thrifted cardigan only cost me a dollar at the Goodwill bins. Nothing beats that price and it’s %100 cotton which washes well and feels good on me. 😊 But I do still struggle with “trying to find the next thing I want”.

@@yazzybananas3106 Totally relate! It's a struggle for me to not want to collect things. The 'hunt' to find that one special thing is quite satisfying too. It's tricky.

Some people laugh about following your “seasons” colors, but I’m proof that it’s legit. I had my colors done and could never find anything I liked. When I had them done a second time (long story), finding clothes became easy, and I had so many compliments. It also makes shopping easier because you know you have a matching sweater or shoes or jewelry in your closet. You can also mix and match much easier.

I have been feeling good about outfit repeating. Pretty easy for me because I am retired and don't have to wear the same outfits and be seen by the same people. For some weird reason I didn't used to do this. My next hurdle will be styling outfits out of my closet. Not sure why I resist doing this. Maybe I have too much stuff in there?

The outlier comment is so true. There are pieces that I just don’t see as “everyday “ so don’t get used. Also..have to admit primarily these are also items that a sales associate ‘picked’ for me..that I wasn’t looking for and don’t really know what to do with. Looked great in the store…but not really my aesthetic. They are kinda me…but feel, as you say, a bit costume.

I have 65ish items in my closet, excluding jackets, raincoat, dress coat. I calculated I am only wearing 33% of my wardrobe. I have put myself on shopping ban. I am going to rotate through every item which should take 3 more weeks. I am going to determine why I am not wearing 100% of what I own. The first week I got rid of three items I wore because I did not like the fit and the material. I am really enjoying my self-imposed challenge.

Thank you for asking. I ended up keeping 50 items. I am wearing every thing. I am using the flip the hanger when you wear something. I am visual, don’t like spread sheets. This method encourages me to not wear the same items. I feel like I might get rid of 5-6 more items. I will stay on shopping ban until Spring 2023. I have a few holes in my Spring/summer items. So far, I really like it !

I get rid of pieces that don’t flatter my figure : too tight, too loose, color is wrong for my skin tone, too boobalicious, etc. I don’t worry about “ just in case scenarios” or “I spent good money for that” or “maybe someday I will have somewhere to where this” or “ this will look better when I lose 10 lbs”. I just move on. No regrets. Don’t look back.

Buying clothes in the wrong sizes in the past . I have realized that the reason I wasn’t reaching for certain pieces I loved or didn’t feel put together , was due to not taking the time to realize if the size/fit was appropriate

People always joke with me because I steam or iron EVERY SINGLE PIECE of clothing my children or I own immediately after washing and/or drying. Yet, we can literally grab anything at the last minute and it’s ready. I also clean/buff all of our shoes once a month while watching videos or something. The best advice I was ever given is, if you stay ready, you will never have to get ready. It seriously changed my life.
