I've tried all the solutions. Traps seem to just catch the adults going out for a stroll after they're done laying tons of eggs. Neem oil and insect soap seemed to slow them down a bit, but regular application still didn't eliminate them. Mosquito bits seem to have the longest term impact but I found that the gnats will still come back if I let the soil dry all the way out then water it again. I think the only solution left is to burn the house down and start from scratch.

When I moved into my first "real" apartment I decided I wanted to beautify it with plants, so I bought 8 houseplants from Trader Joe's. It was Spring time. A few days later I saw a few little flies, so I squashed them, but after a few weeks my whole apartment was infested. I was so embarrassed. After trying a few things and doing research, what worked best for me was: first, make sure the soil is dry; treat the soil weekly (or as scheduled) during your normal watering for a month with hydrogen peroxide (I used 1 gallon of water and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide for all the plants to not damage them); set up shot glasses beside the plants with apple cider vinegar and 4-5 drops of soap on the surface; place yellow sticky tape above or near the infected plants, remove weekly or when filled with gnats; spray the leaves with a mixture of 1-cup water, 2 table spoons white vinegar, and a tea spoon of soap. Spraying the leaves prevents other bugs, as well, from eating the leaves. After a month they will be gone, you can till the top soil and return to watering and caring for your plants as usual.

Here's what has finally worked for me after weeks of battling an infestation: I removed the top two inches of soil form each affected plant, let them really dry out (for me it took like 3 weeks because these are big plants in big pots!). Meanwhile, I set yellow sticky traps, sprayed the soil with neem oil (not sure how effective this was, but it was worth a shot). By far the most effective was the window fly traps, clear sticky traps that adhere to your windows easily. They've caught nearly a hundred between the two traps, maybe more! Once the plants were well and truly dried, I watered using a mosquito bit solution and for the last few days I've seen very few flies and the problem is markedly decreased. Best of luck to everyone, you will prevail!

@Juliamh22223 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using the neem oil method you were talking about, saturating the top layer of soil, especially right after a thorough watering. I feel like it acts almost like a sealant that kills whatever gnats are already in the root system and prevents more gnats from traveling down INTO the soil when it’s moist after a watering.

brilliant. I dumped all my plants last year because of gnats. Now all my new plants which were gnat free are full of gnats since I opened my windows in the spring. My apt in ground floor. Figures. So thanks for your info. You have saved my plants. Love you. Katt

I’ve tried a lot of things to control gnats. I’ve noticed you were “spraying” a tiny amount of diatomaceous earth dust on the leaves of the plant, but I have personally put one inch of it directly on potting soil to cover it ALL, with a spoon, and it DID work! It may not be aesthetic, because now I feel like I have white soil everywhere, but it worked sooo well and I will probably just put tiny rocks or sand on top of it to make it look more cute.

Hi, how you doing? My first experience with fungus gnats in 63 years and two plants, it's a long story. Anyway I appreciate it bought a plant with the buggers and because I never had them before I couldn't figure out where they were coming from and after the plants were outside they were in my drains, oh boy. Anyway I'm sure you've heard this story before so I just wanted to say your video was excellent and awe informing and your cute too. Peace.

Hi Harli! How are you? Thanks for this video. I used Mosquito bits too. It really works. I put it in a coffee filter and infuse it into my watering water. I also use Neem oil. I mix it in water with peppermint soap. Once a month my plants get a treatment. My plants also get treatments if I see any pests. Have a good one! Gerry 😎 Please tell your Mom thanks for the plant swap. It was fun. I didn't swap any plants, but was still fun to be part of. 😊 😎

Thank you for this. I took your advice. I let the spoil dry out in between waterings, used neem oil to spray the soil, used the same fly traps as you, did a peroxide/water bath in the roots and trimmed them, have a few fly trap ribbons through the house and use apple cider in the apple fly traps also sitting on top of soil. My plants are thriving

Thank you so much for this. I thought my trash was attracting bugs but the gnats came from the miracle grow cactus soil I bought. I bought an expensive fly trap but didnt know my DE that I had lying around could have done the trick. I just fill a salt shaker with DE and put it anywhere I think I have roaches and it killed them off. I didnt know DE was safe for plants too, I’m so glad!!! I just applied some on my plant and I see no gnats!!! ☺️🥰❤️🙏🏽

I had a very serious fungus gnats infestation in my large fiddle leaf fig tree. I tried Neem Oil with very limited success. I also used Neem pellets (I can't recall the specific name) which I mixed into the top two inches of soil and let the soil really dry out, I also per your recommendation used the Yellow Sticky Traps so my final treatment (3 in total) were Mosquito Bits. Remember my soil was dried out, I had mixed in Neem pellets and placed the Yellow Sticky 'traps throughout the pot and steeped the Mosquito Bits in water and watered with the MB water. WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!! Your advise worked and I really didn't think anything could help. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!

I like how you used the duster! I got the 2lb bag that came w a free duster. Instead I got a spoon and sprinkled it in, after 3 days I mixed it into the soil. Lol I did this after the hydrogen peroxide bath, I'm a worried parent and I despise those things. This is the 2nd time I get them. I did a soil change and I still got them (on my sansaveria laurentaii) and I think its because I have a mom that likes to water my plants (I had to make signs to not water)... I'll assemble the duster to try it out (as well as purchase more materials to aerate my soil). Thanks for the video!🥰

FYI, fungus gnats aren't attracted to apple cider vinegar - so if your vinegar traps are working, you also have fruit flies.
@rizzaanderer16953 жыл бұрын
I bought fruit fly traps and I’m pretty sure the main ingredient is Apple cider vinegar. It has a little window so I can see the bugs inside. They’re definitely fungus gnats.

I brought in 17 geranium plants and now have a load of gnats. Thank you so much for this video. Just what I needed. I know these methods will work. Daughter gifted me 2 succulent plants a month for a year. Concerned about gnats getting in those babies. Not so concerned now that I know it's the damp soil that attracts them. Still, they will be history. Thanks again.

I think the real question to ask is, why all these fungus gnats all of a sudden? I've been using potting soil since I was in my teens (54 now) and never had the problems I'm having now with fungus gnats! What's with the soil quality?
@belindaroney5 жыл бұрын
Senor Nessuno, same here. I repotted several house plants with Miracle Gro potting soil this past spring & it was infested with fungus gnats and also grew mold on the surface of all the repotted plants. I finally have the gnats under control by using mosquito bits & sticky traps but never want to go through this again. I'll never buy Miracle Gro again.

I had a lot so I did a combo attack of the apple cider vinegar/soap/water mixture, one with some balsamic and apple cider vinegar, one with just apple cider vinegar, some fruit fly traps that look like little apples and had a vinegar smelling liquid in them, and then these sheets of sticky paper (fly paper?) since I couldn't find the ones that stick in the soil. The sticky paper worked the best. I just laid flat on the soil and trapped almost all of them in the first 24 hours. The vinegar traps caught some, with the straight apple cider one doing the best. The little fruit fly traps were worthless (presumably since they're for fruit flies, but I thought it was worth a shot). Good luck to you all in your endeavors.

Llama Cat I just started using them recently and they’ve been causing tons of mold growth on top of the soil... I’ve scooped a few off but any on the top of the soil are still molding and I worry about any under the soil. Switching to bit water sounds like the way to go.

Noooo. 😣. I made a trap for them. In a tiny cup, small enough to fit inside your pot I filled it halfways with a mixture of apple cider vinegar, a few squirts of sish soap and a dash of vanilla. It killed so many and I put a trap in each pot yhga was giving me trouble as well as a couple on my counter. The traps contained at least 30 each every week until I was down to a few. Now I keep refilling the traps and leave it in the pot. But be careful not to let the mixture touch the leaves or it will probably kill the leaves.

PS you can use anything. You can cut the bottom of a plastic water bottle or use Tupperware containers. I made a little dip in the soil to set the cup in.
