Thank you, Andrew, I see European languages have similar idioms, but with different words, which is very interesting.

Hi, thanks for your comment. No, that's not really how we use "ring a bell". We could perhaps say: Graduating from college was a turning point in her life. Best wishes Andrew

Hello and thanks for your comment. "In one ear and out the other" and "memory like a sieve" are slightly more informal. All of the others can be used in both formal and informal contexts. Andrew

Good evening Andrew. AFTER THE CALL, MARK CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT HE HAD BEEN SAYING TO CLARE. The wh clause indicating the previous action of two past actions is in the past perfect continuous tense. It's fine. But the clause indicating the latest of two past actions should be in the past simple tense. In my opinion, it should have been either MARK COULDN'T REMEMBER or MARK DIDN'T REMEMBER. How is it MARK CAN'T REMEMBER? Another possible alternative may be AFTER THE CALL, MARK CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT HE HAS BEEN SAYING TO CLARE. I would be grateful if it could be clarified.
