I normally do rlly well in maths exams, but the last few questions of paper 1 I just couldn't see a way of solving them which is so frustrating because I could do them outside of the exam!! Do you have any tips for dealing with this so I can confidently answer all the last few questions without panicking/ seeing the question in a different way which may make it easier to solve? also, thank you so much for this it was very helpful

THIS IS THE PROBLEM I HAVE! Maths is probably my strongest subject, but when I got into the last few questions, I started panicking and just couldn't solve them. It is so frustrating because I could probably have done those questions, had I not been in a terrifying exam environment. Not praying on the downfall of others but I think that it was pretty difficult for most people so hopefully the grade boundaries change accordingly? Best of luck!!!!

As you and francesca said, you already know the reason, it's because you panic. Whenever I get into an exam (lol) I just reason that there's literally nothing else I can do besides try my best and break things down. It'll still happen a bit, especially because you're more relaxed outside of the exam and have had more time to think about the question, but just try and enter that "zen-like" state in the exam. Also, practice.

Perhaps the easiest way to do the first question is to equate the area of the right angled triangle (0,0),(-20,0),(0,10) as 0.5*20*10 and as 0.5*r*h where h is the hypotenuse (easily seen to be root500 = 10root5) which gives r = 200/10root5 = 4root5 ie root 80 etc 🤠

For the first question, when you drew the radius I realised that you can just use trigonometry to get 80, and I did. Only thing is, on the calculator you will have to use the answer button to get the correct answer, if you round it to 3 sf then you will probably get something like 79.9....

How did you use trigonometry to solve it?😭 like once you’ve found the gradient with rise/run what do you do afterwards. Can you please explain your method in some what of little detail
@hurricane4912
@hurricane4912 4 ай бұрын
@@sma1213___ ok so ill divide this into steps: Firstly, the point (-20,0) is B, (0,10) is A and (0,0) is O. You can find either angle ABO or angle BAO to begin with by trigonometry. I used the tan inverse function with the fraction 10/20 to find angle ABO. I can do this because angle AOB is a right angle, and basic trigonometry as I know the segment BO is 20 and AO is 10. I get a value approximating 26.57 (2 d.p.), DON'T round this, use the answer button on your calculator to save it. Then I can find the radius using more trigonometry. Lets say that the tangent meets the radius (r) at point M with the coordinates (x,y), you don't need to find any coordinates for this method: they are all given in the question so I will use variables. Now you use the sin function (Note that this may only work if you start by finding angle ABO, you will have to use a slightly different method for starting with angle BAO). So basically, sin(x) = O/H. x is angle ABO (approx 26.57 but use ANS button), O is the radius, and H is 20 (given in question). To find the radius, you simply rearrange the formula to give 20sin(ABO) = r. You should get a value for r approximating to 8.94 (2 d.p. but again use the ANS button in the calculator to temporarily store this). This is basically root 80, so you know the radius is root 80. All you have to do now is square the exact answer, you will get 80, this is r squared. Therefore, as you know the centre is (0,0): you just say x^2 + y^2 = 80. It will be helpful to draw an annotated diagram with all the points as it will get slightly confusing.
@hurricane4912
@hurricane4912 4 ай бұрын
@@sma1213___ btw you dont need to find gradient for this method.
@sma1213___

@@hurricane4912 omg thank you that’s simplified it so much better🙏 but I had a question about that sin(x) bit cause how does the question state that the hypothenuse is 20? It says y=-20 since the coordinates are (-20,0) so where did you get the 20 from. And when you inversed the tan function why did the 20 change to a positive number
