I have implemented just about every style of bed into my garden. Raised beds, in ground, hill bed, sublevel in ground bed, and worm bed. My favorite raised beds are well stacked stones and filled in. The stones create homes for predator insects and small lizards, as well as crickets, which keep the lizards around. Very scenic. Never stop creating and growing! Happy Autumn

That sounds so cool! But how do you stack the stones so they dont just fall apart?
@lemonyskunkketts7781
@lemonyskunkketts7781 9 ай бұрын
@@socloseagain4298 You make sure you have some stones that are protruding towards the inside, and as you stack layer by layer, you gradually fill it in with soil. The soil will act like the glue that holds it along with the weight. Water it in as you go. Eventually you have a round, or whatever shape, garden bed made free with just cost of labor.

@@socloseagain4298 You must groove the most correct stones together, eventually they will all hold each other. It takes some time.

Hey Huw, You do so much for the gardening world. Perhaps you need to take a break over the winter months and not push yourself so hard. So many achievements this year.... I recognise the signs... give yourself a break before it catches up with you healthwise. Sent with care and concern.

Thank you Huw, Im loving your style atm so free, curious and real. My allotment plot looks messy - Im told!- compared to the dug, flat, brown, cleared traditional (sad looking )plots and allotments and your plot is like a bigger version of mine, though I havent yet got my polytunnel.Maybe my autumn project? Happy Autumn

So inspired by all your ideas, thank you! I’m spreading the hedge clippings on my veg garden paths, deciduous and evergreen. No time to chop them, but I did it last year and they broke down eventually.

Easy answer? Mulch. Cover crops are a healthier alternative. And a cover crop WITH mulch is just crazy enough to work.

We tried no-dig, never looked back. Over the top of whatever weeds are growing, double layer of cardboard, overlapping so no light. Layer of compost on top. All the weeds rot, feed the soil and plant life. Maintains soil structure so you can walk on it all year round and just trowel to plant module seedlings for almost everything or direct sow. Because the soil isn't disturbed, few weeds through season. Compost an outlay initially so some just use cardboard and when planting just remove any that isn't rotted - you start the season with a weed free plot - saves hours even if you like to dig. Huw has covered this and Charles Dowding whose videos on this topic are good. The other thing we learnt for paths was cardboard then wood chip on top - no mowing nor environment for slugs, snails, leather jackets, etc. Can also put things to compost underneath as rots and feeds the soil.

Whenever a crop/plant finishes if the chooks can eat it, they get it, my vegetable area in the autumn only needs tomato, pumpkin/Curbits, climbing beans and corn plants to be removed either to compost or burn pile. Once removed areas either raked ready for the next crop or mulched/composted.

I dont end up with as much compost as i should because the housecow and chickens eat the plants i pull out 😉. Of course, I get manure in return. Very few deciduous trees here too. I get to minus 8C here but my veg garden grows actively all winter (leeks, onions, brassicas, chard and cold tolerant lettuce).

A quick question- how, where and for how long do you store your comfrey "molasses", please? Would love to try it straight away and do not want to ruin it. Have been learning from you for over two years now - can not even express how grateful I am. Thank you so much and take care!

Love Autumn! The most beautiful season. Been chopping up scavenged wood for the winter fires in our pit. Roll on Nov 5th! The compost pile is high but can always be higher! The seed box is ram packed! :) Am i crazy or... Did i see you drive passed us at the Teifi pools a few weeks ago?

@@HuwRichards I bloody knew it!?!?! 🤣KZbinr in the wild! 🤣 What a wonderful place it is. Have you been to the other end to the Edan valley? Gorgeous too, but rather more touristy of course. 😉 The isolation of Teifi pools is what makes it so special. We're keen history nuts and first came across it when visiting Strata Florida. Soon became one of our favourite places. 🙂

Sow multisown leeks 3-4 weeks later than single plantings. That way they don't go to seed.

What material(s) could you use besides plastic to cover that polytunnel? I'd like to put one in my backyard. I'm in zone 4-5.
