167 lives lost in a single circus show: the number is as chilling as the many accidents that occur in circuses regularly. In this video, I’ve compiled the most notorious incidents involving acrobats’ daring stunts, animal training, and even routine performances.

Ex circus performer here. I was seriously injured when out act went wrong. I recovered but it was terrifying. We had a trampoline act and one member didn’t go over my head. He slammed into me. I still remember the look on his face as he flew towards me. Wow… I remember the crowd gasped and all went black for me😅. Oh well.

I hear you. But the Wallendas as circus performers go back many generations, by some accounts as far back as 200 years. They will not use a net - they made their name and reputation by never using one. It's tradition. I don't agree with that but I understand. Watching them take such risks is hair-raising. When they're on the wire for The Pyramid, no music is played. The audience leaves and they will never, ever, ever forget that performance.

Hi I am an 8th generation performer from the circus ,the reason they don't use nets is not because their ego its because it helps them focus even better because having a net gives you a mindset where you do mind if you mess up and fall, where you don't have a net is when you have to sharpen your focus and make sure you do everything with precision.

For the Wallendas it came from an accident early in their careers when Karls brother, while performing alone, died after falling then being bounced out of the net that caught him. I agree that it is a stupid decision to make, as yes there was a death related to the net but without a net any fall is likely to be fatal. In the end I would imagine it was that experience mixed with overconfidence in their ability and adrenaline seeking to keep pushing for riskier acts

I've been to a circus once as a child. It was incredible despite not having any crazy, life-threatening stunts. There were people on roller skates dancing, twirling, there were people performing small but still cool jumps, a lot of optical illusions, creative and flashy (but fairly simple) tricks, acting... The part I remember the most was how a clown was playing badly on an instrument, and the other members pretended to be annoyed and took the instrument away. After which he'd yell "There's another one!!" and either improvise a new instrument or pull it out from seemingly nowhere. To which the other members would "get annoyed" again, chase him around and try to take away his instrument. This repeated a few times, progressively getting more and more creative and ridiculous. That was probably the most successful act in the whole show, it got both children and adults laughing, but the entire thing was a big success, to the point where there was enough applause for the performers to have to come back 3 times for a little bonus act. There were no animals. No dangerous equipment being used, nor excessively dangerous tricks being performed. Like sure, some of the jumps they did could've ended in nasty accidents, but not falling-tens-of-meters levels of nasty accidents. And yet, it was fun, it was popular, and it created very fond memories for so many of us. I'm not saying all shows should be like that. I get that some performers wouldn't be satisfied with this, and some people wouldn't want to see a show without crazy stunts. I'm just saying that risking the lives of performers isn't necessary for a good show.

Use safety nets, please! I want to be entertained, not traumatized. Same with some animals. I do not think dangerous animals should be used. Let’s use holograms instead of lions, bears, elephants, killer whales, etc. Horses, camels, burros, donkeys, cats, dogs, goats, okay as long as they are treated well and given a retirement well before they become old. The Hartford fire was during WWII and the canvas tent was waterproofed with wax and some sort of petroleum product instead of its usual. Whatever that was, was all set aside for the war effort. How it started is still up for debate, but someone wasn’t thinking. They’d basically created a giant candle. In those days, smoking was permitted under the tent, so it could have come from a cigarette. I believe afterwards, smoking was banned indoors at all circuses throughout the USA.

aerial circus performer here. I have seen numerous comments questioning why they dont use nets or other things to stop them from getting badly injured ect. In my experience, there are various reasons why we sometimes don't use nets or mats to protect us, none of which include our egos or for the audience's sake. i would say a good 90% of the time we perform with crash mats or nets, however in certain cases we are either forced to not use them or choose to. Some examples of this are: lack of space to put a mat, trip hazard to other performers if we have one, and ect. Sometimes, of course, we simply choose not to use a mat/net as we believe we don't need one and would prefer to have the ground free to be used during the routine. Of course this is rare and only if our routines don't include especially dangerous tricks where we have a high risk of falling. I am happy to answer any questions about this so please ask if you're curious to find out more :)

No living human being can say they have never benefitted from the life of an animal or animals. Entertainment is one of the many ways we all use animals. No body or animals lover can say they do. ~~Saw the Wallenda's, including Karl, when I was 5 or 6. Messed up thing about Karl's fateful walk , one of his sons talked about too. Karl had entrusted a crew who ended up not securing the rigging properly. Clearly see the wire bouncing&isn't taut like it's supposed to be. He dealt w/stronger winds walking the gorge&likely would've done a handstand/something til it let up?.

I didn't know that, I have wonder if he because of his age was not able to held his balance when the wind came as he would have when he was younger, sometimes you don't want to realise you are getting older but have not heard that the rope was not secured properly.

One of my ancestors on my mother's side of the family was a circus skydiver and died when his parachute failed to open. I cannot remember his name or what year the accident happened, but this video brought that bit of family lore to mind.

Safety nets should be mandatory. Imminent death has never been a selling point for me. I'm actually less likely to watch if I think there's a chance I might see someone seriously injured or die. (Yes, I am aware of the irony - but they don't actually show the aftermath in vids like this. Just facts, no gore.) I don't think I'm in the minority with this. 🤷

My grandson and I used to go to the Barnum and Bailey Circus every summer. Eventually PETA protesters won out and there were no more animals used. Attendance dropped and finally the Circus discontinued its performances. I actally have a problem with zoos. Polar Bears don't belong in a tiny tank in the desert.

I still remember, from my childhood (meaning back in the 60's), a news report about a guy in a circus who was doing "tricks" with an elephant. Tricks that the elephant was NOT happy with, so, with its trunk, it grabbed him, threw him on the ground, and the elephant stomped him to death in front of everyone. Elephants are very smart, and generally quite peaceable behemoths- just don't push your luck with one.

I remember frequently going to the circus in out town (Central Asia) and I will always remember that when the big cats or other animals were used the circus staff asked to be quiet to not startled animals. Though in our country there is no any protection from animal abuse no matter what kind of animal.
