Robben was good at Madrid. I am not sure why you guys are saying otherwise. While he was there, Madrid was struggling for a good coach. Madrid sold Robben, Robinson, and Vandaavert, players that were not doing too bad. They just panicked and sold players, but the issue was because they never had any good coach.

Ridiculous to define all midseason signings as panic buys. Some of these were carefully considered. Eric Cantona was more a panic buy at Leeds the previous season than at Man U, but both were great signings. Rooney and Berbatov were planned long before and Berbatov was an underwhelming second choice for much of his time at Old Trafford, used against the teams that were goal fodder but not in the big matches.

For a real bunch of panic buys (and loans) take the players that Harry Rednapp brought into my home town team Portsmouth in 2006 when they were well in the relegation zone, including 3 Spurs players that came as a "job lot" and Andres D'Alessandro. They took a couple of games to bed in but then gelled and pulled off a "great escape". Fans sang "Juan Pedro Mendes ... there's only Juan Pedro Mendes". Benjani, the centre forward who couldn't score goals for ages but made plenty. This season Eddie Howe seems to have got some pretty shrewd January buys for Newcastle. How the heck did he get Kieran Trippier for just £12M?
