Looks like the Space Invaders TV game is going for the original arcade game look, minus the plastic overlay. That's exactly how it looks on original hardware without the plastic on top of the cabinet's screen, which added artificial color to the monochrome aliens :) But yeah, awesome video! I forgot how many of these things existed and how many of them I've owned, this is a fascinating topic! I'd love to see more about how these even came to be, and why so many came out in the early 2000s.

I actually bought a few of these when they were new, and the logic of why they were coming out was that everyone of my age range (I was 21 in 2000) had fond memories of the games and want to play them, but retrogaming wasn't really a thing yet and most people didn't want to go to flea markets and swap meets to find the stuff. We just went to Walmart on a Saturday night, bought one of these and a case of beer, and good times were had. It was a set of products that were at the right place at exactly the right time... Or at least that's how I lived it.

What I have noticed with these plug and play is that they are battery hogs. They suck up a lot of battery very quickly. I converted a plug and play to a hybrid where you could plug a wall wart into the plug and play and wouldn't have to worry about batteries. Of course you have to be careful because you don't want batteries in there and then plug in the wall wart because *BOOM*!!
@The8BitGuy8 жыл бұрын
Indeed.. the voltage regulators they use are meant to be cheap, not efficient. Some of the units I showed, like the space invaders version, actually have power sockets where you can run them from an adapter. Others, as you state, can be modified.

Thats "Doctor" Robotnic. He didn't go 7 years to evil medical school to be called mister. Also the Atari Flashback units don't have the games that defined it because of licensing. All of the good games that you mentioned were licensed to Atari by Sega, Namco, Activision, and so on and so forth. So while it would be great to have those games on the plug and plays it not going to happen without paying licensing fees to their respective companies.

I chuckled at "Mappy... I've never heard of it." I've played Mappy multiple times in arcades, and I've played home versions of it (without looking that up, I think the ColecoVision had one?), and I have NEVER figured out what the hell it's supposed to be about. You play as a mouse thief, I guess? Who robs... trampoline houses? Some day, I'll look up what it's official backstory is, and I'll probably smack my forehead, but it's almost more fun playing it without having any idea WHY the player character is doing the things he(?) is doing.

Seconded that notion. The Radica Genesis consoles are really cheap on eBay (I have seen them go for around $3 to $10), and it would be cool to see it in action. Same for the Flashback 2. That said, for the Radica he'd have to build a new case for it since the cartridge connector won't fit in that tiny case. Alternatively, he could solder an Everdrive cart straight to the pins of the Radica board and basically have an SD loading Genesis.

I grew up on the Namco Pacman plug-and-play, and despite being made out of cheap plastic it's a quality made system. I still have the one I grew up on and it still works. We bought one for one of my cousin's kids and they love it. It's definitely worth getting for kids or someone who will appreciate classic arcade games.

Atari Flashback 8? 120 games...update?
@whattheheck10004 жыл бұрын
Atari Flashback 2 has Pitfall. Also on the Pole Position game on the Ms Pac-Man unit you press a button to shift into high gear, the “car” tops out at 200+ mph. I had the Flashback 2 and the Ms Pac-Man plug and play as a kid. October 29, 2019 3:04 am

By the way, when the NES plug-n-play releases in November, will you review that? It will come directly from Nintendo and have 40 built-in games like the Mario trilogy, the Zelda games, Metroid, and the Megaman games.

I acquired the namco Ms Pacman one somehow awhile back. The driving game also stumped me till I randomly discovered the twisting joystick. I play it on rare occasions but really its just a display piece. Wish it had an AC adapter, or at least didn't require unscrewing the back plate to replace the batteries. I was just at Target the other day looking at the new mini retro consoles. There was a couple Ataris and a Sega Genesis, bit too pricey for what would inevitably collect dust on a shelf.

The sound IS terrible, but it is still good. At least you can also you cargites.
@nathenhutchison61826 жыл бұрын
Is the sound worse than an actual Genesis? I haven't noticed the difference. It has also been 10+ years since I have played an actual Genesis, though. Maybe I should hook one up and do a comparison.

Great reviews... the biggest problem with all of them... No S-Video connection and No ability to hook up a Quality Joystick/Game Pad.. I am hoping in the future... they will re-release all of these with an HDMI connector and Ports to hook up your favorite controllers!!!! 8 bit Guy.. keep rocking the golden Oldies!!

Even an authentic NES could set you back a couple hundred these days.

Just get a Raspberry Pi. I recently did after being unable to find an SNES Mini and it was surprisingly easy. You get pretty much every console up to N64, the only issue obtaining the ROMs.

I think the Space Invaders that was being emulated was based off a port from a Tandy computer gaming system we had when I was a kid. It was a cartridge based system. The game would plug into the side of the keyboard...I can't remember too much more about it though.

Yay, Mean Bean Machine! I loved that game! In fact I have a video on my channel of me playing it and many of its Japanese cousin and its online clone I frequent when I have spare time, an amazing competitive puzzle game that everyone should try! Burying your opponent is so satisfying and scrambling to get your chain done before you get buried gets your heart racing! Almost as fun as my latest adventure!

The Ms. Pacman is pretty darn authentic. Lots of Ms Pacman versions, including handheld devices have a different lineup levels than the original. This one is like the arcade version.
@Grunchy0055 жыл бұрын
I bought that original Atari a long time ago somehow, it also has Combat which is like the quintessential Atari game. Based on this video I picked up Pacman (specifically for Bosconian), Ms Pacman (specifically for Pole Position, Ms Pacman), the paddle version (with 2 paddles specifically for Circus Atari, another quintessential Atari game). It's all pretty cool but now I got a Retro Pi with an actual arcade-style button set.

I had the Sega one the Atari one and the first Pac-Man one you showed and I took those on EVERY vacation I went on for most of that decade. That Pac-Man one is an incredible build and I played that thing so much. We also played dozens of hours of Kid Chameleon we had it mapped out with secrets and never finished it
