The truth is we live in a society, we don't live in a vacuum just for ourselves, and the way you dress and the way you appear to others has a huge impact whether you want it or not. The truth is also that it does cost some money to dress up. That being said, dressing up can be a lot less expensive than you might think and I strongly suggest you check out this video on 15 things you can do to dress like a gentleman on a budget. Even if you do have to spend a little more, it really pays to look at it more of an investment rather than an expense.
1. People Won't Take You Seriously
As a consequence, you won't take yourself as seriously and you will think that you can't achieve certain things even though you could do them. No matter the situation, dressing well gives you an air of authority and it usually means dressing up. Yale conducted an interesting study of mock real estate negotiations; they had men dressed up, dressed neutral, and dressed down. The men who dressed down felt at a disadvantage from the get-go and ultimately, they lost more money and deferred more money to the people who were better dressed.
2. People Who Dress Up Make More Money Over The Course Of Their Career
People who dress up make more money over the course of their career just think about it if your boss doesn't take you seriously and if he doesn't respect your work why would he promote you even if you don't believe the studies and think that it worked has changed 75% of men think that their well-dressed counterparts are more successful in their jobs.
3. You Look Less Attractive
Three, you will look less attractive. You can't change your physical features aside from working out and even if you work out, the fact remains that if you wear a suit or if you dress up, if you dress well, you will always look better than the equivalent person in a t-shirt and sweatpants.
4. Dressing Down Will Keep You From Doing Things
When you wear sweatpants and your t-shirt, you don't feel it's appropriate to go out on the street so you just stay in, hang out on the couch, order pizza and watch Netflix. In my opinion, your clothes should not hold you back, they should help you move forward.
5. Dressing Down Makes You Look Lazy
Five, dressing down makes you look lazy. Yes, it's easy and cheap to buy a pair of t-shirt and sweatpants, at the same time, that's exactly the message you communicate "I'm cheap and lazy"
6. What You Wear Is Not Just About You
Tom Ford once said that dressing well is a form of good manners and if you think about it, it's a form of showing respect to others, it's a form that you show respect for the event you're at, and in turn, you will earn more respect from others for that.
7. Dressing Well Makes You Feel Confident & Powerful
In turn, that leads to you doing things that you otherwise might not have done if you were dressed down. It could be things like asking your boss for that raise or asking out that woman that you have a crush on.
8. Dressing Down Costs More In The Long Run
Yes, t-shirts are inexpensive and so are sweatpants, at the same time, they're usually made of low-quality materials and so they wear out a lot more.
9. You Never Know Who You're Going To Meet
A couple of years ago, I was on an airplane flight and when I travel, I always try to dress well, that means I wear a jacket, I wear some chinos, some leather shoes, I wear a bowtie or regular tie, and that really makes me better dressed than 99.9% of people who fly.

Gentlemen's Gazette seriously doubt you would have received that line of credit for $100,000 had you been dressed in a graphic T Shirt, shorts & flip flops. I work at a International Airport, during the summer I see many men dressed this way. Once overheard a well dressed lady passenger tell another passenger, that some European countries say "The average American dress like their going camping."

I'm a diplomat working in Turkey and was invited to a charity concert (at night). I was picked up, in a brand new black BMW SUV, and to my surprise by colleagues wearing jeans and t-shirts, and sandals no doubt. Although very hot during the summer, I was utterly shocked by their lack of formality and respect for the event and event organizers. When I entered the car they said "Ok, first things first. Go home and change. You're making us look bad", to which I replied "I agree with going home and changing, but to your home. This is a concert after all.". We arrived and I was met by the organizer who ushered me to the front of the hall, unclipped the red velvet rope and sat me down next to several ministers. I wanted to ask him to reclip the rope and leave my colleagues in the aisle. This was based on my simple style of dark blue Chinos, a white dress shirt, a dark tan suede blazer and brown penny loafers. I purposely made an effort to sit directly next to the Turkish authorities to avoid photos taken of them sitting next to other diplomats in t-shirts. How have we come to this? Come one people, wake up!

The Hebrew Barrister Funny story here actually. Several years ago now, I ended up in court over a dispute and the individual I was in dispute with came to court in this hideous, cheap, poorly fitting, metallic white suite and garish, metallic gold tie. I didn't own an actual suite at the time, however, I dressed well in fitted clothing and subdued colors, a decent blazer and a nice overcoat. Within the first five minutes, you could see by the judges expression exactly how things were going to turn out. I have never been more thankful for having good taste and good sense in my life.

Same thing I find at times. Especially from people who are close to you. Perhaps they feel threatened. It comes easier though, since they’ll get used to it. Weird how it’s strangers who appreciate it more than your close friends. I’ve gone to Walmart with a three piece suit and gotten some compliments from people I didn’t know. They love it! I mean, people watch vintage films and say things like “Back when people actually dressed better!” But they do not dress up themselves. So my take is, be the change you want to see. Dress up!

What do banks have to do with economics?
@TuBui2
@TuBui2 5 жыл бұрын
@@2bitrasputin793 they're fundamental. Economics is (at it's most basic level) supply vs demand. One form of this is Money supply vs money demand. When there's a lack of money supply in the economy, the value of each existing unit of currency goes up and vice versa. A metric you might be familiar with is inflation. Banks are fundamental to helping grow and shrink this money supply in the economy through lending. This money can go into endless things, whether it's for consuming goods/services or investment into the business (which give people jobs and eventually pay taxes). While this is a rather rudimentary example, I hope it helps.

People do notice you if you look and dress well. You will stand out because so many men dress so poorly, sloppy and with not much real care. If you just put some effort into looking well, people around you notice. They will even if they say nothing. Just today I stopped by my local alteration store that does most my tailoring on my way home from work. I was dressed sharp and with a shirt jacket on. Though I wore the jacket to work, I didn’t keep it on all day being relaxed at the office. But you never know where your going to stop on your way home. As I walked into the store, the girl that usually do my cloth measurements immediately recognized me and shouted out my name just like that to her other coworker to get my cloth that was tailored. I was impressed she knew my name in full. She then commented how sharp I looked, including my nice shirt jacket style. She does have a part in me looking dressed well. As she has personally fitted me over and over in at least 50+ Trousers. I could see the girl had a sense of pride in not only me being a customer, but she seemed to feel great in mood in having fitted me often for tailoring and looking well dressed. People do pay attention even if you think they aren’t. Just dress well and go about your daily business or visiting places. People will surely react to you different how you appear in and around them.

Ardent, Thanks for sharing your story. I live in Jersey and go to New York City often and I am mostly in a suit. And I sure notice that people usually do respect me more since I am wearing a nice suit. And I think people ask me for money more in New York because I dress in Double breasted or single-breasted suits, and they think I have money! People are definitely more polite and respectful to me wearing a suit than they would be if I was in a white T shirt, jeans and work boots. Keep dressing nice my friend. You are correct people do notice when you dress well ! All the best.

I am a woman who enjoys your channel. I work in an industry where we dress for work. Even so, I dress to the best of my ability. I never where pants. I wear skirts, dresses, skirted suits, dress pumps, and good quality jewelry, brooches, and silk scarves. I feel my dress makes me more serious in my field, which as a woman is important. When I fly, I always dress well. Dressing well does not mean being uncomfortable. I wear a low heeled pump, a comfortable skirt, a jacket and sweater, and I carry a silk pashmina for warmth on the plane. When I go out to run errands, I dress nicely, too. Part of dressing up is how it makes you feel about yourself. It's about the respect you give yourself, which gives others the signal to respect you back. I have a similar story to Raphael about dressing to get a job. I dress when I get together with friends. One of my friends offered me a job that I really wanted. Since I always dress well even in casual settings, my friend sees me as competent and professional which helped me to get the job offer that I really wanted.

Whilst I broadly agree with the nine reasons dressing down is overrated, I think the general direction of the argument that dressing well is weighted more toward the world of business and commerce. I have worked in factories when I was younger and obviously dressed 'blue collar'. That said, I now work in education (a primary school teacher) and as a male teacher. I try to dress 'up' in order to bolster my authority. I don't wear a business suit however I do wear a formal shirt and jacket. My colleagues comment on my dressing 'up' - mostly in a positive way. The children, I think, notice that I've made a certain amount of effort and I'd hope it reflects in the way they behave;-) I do enjoy your videos. They are about the best on KZbin (I've looked at others and I don't find them as good - in my humble opinion)... Years ago I read an article about dress and attitude. One comment I will never forget was from a retired stewardess. She commented how when people used to go to the airport men had on suits mostly and women nice dresses or skirts. You looked nice. Now you see flip flops and sweat pants and shorts and crop tops. She said the poor attitude goes with the dressing down. She said when people were dressed up their behavior was much better than in years when dressing down at the airport became popular.

They treat people like animals when they go through the airport. It would take an extra 30 minutes to make it through security if you don't wear sweatpants and flip flops...

On a recent trip to Germany, I dressed daily in dress slacks, blazer, and a hat. I was stopped three times in one day in the train station by tourists asking if I spoke English and could I provide directions. Apparently, not dressing in sneakers, "mom" jeans, and a sweatshirt meant that I looked like a German businessman instead of an American tourist. It was quite funny to see their expressions when I told them I spoke English as well as they did and where I lived. I also remember when people dressed decently when traveling instead of like slobs.

I feel like in today's world dressing up says "I don't care what others think about me" a lot more than dressing down. A lot of people will call you pretentious when you're the only one in a nice classy suit in a sea of jeans and graphic tees, but if you don't care and just stay true to your own style it makes you look a lot more confident and independent minded. I'm a woman but I'm very drawn to the whole gentleman culture this channel is all about, trying to craft my own variation of it without wearing the so-called power suits for women all the time.

I love the messages in this video, every message of it. This reminds me several years ago when i was totally oblivious about dressing well. my friend took me to his workplace (TV station) and the people who will perform dressed so well. seeing them close up live and seeing them on tv is a very different experience. after i got home i started to realize how bad my jeans already was. colors fading and feet area all torn up. i became ashamed of myself for never noticing such things long ago, it's like a shock therapy i need that was long overdue. then i started watching youtube style channels and started buying clothes that fit my size and personality. started throw away many old clothes and jeans because my eye has opened. at first my friends are shocked how changed i was and some even dislike me for it, but i don't care and keep moving forward. though i still need many pieces in my wardrobe, right now i'm proud to say that i can dress appropriately for most occasions. people tend to look at me more for dressing well and start conversation with me more. right now i'm into fragrances and i gotta say this is the invisible weapon to my style.

Thank you for this video and thank you for taking the time to share with all of us here in KZbin land! The only thing I would add to this, as an addendum, is that dressing well is possibly even more important then dressing up. You can easily purchase drives of expensive, yet horrifying article of clothing that are called suites or jackets and still look bad.

What some call "pandering to the opinions of others" I call "taking advantage of mindsets and reactions." Even if a man prefers to rock a more casual style in his day-to-day, learning to dress to a tee and look like a million bucks is a piece of badassery we should all have in our repertoire. I try to remember not to judge a book by its cover, and remember that everybody else DOES. Plus, looking sharp just feels sharp.

I appreciate how video blogs like the Gentelman's Gazette are bringing back everything that is positive about masculinity. In my opinion, being a gentleman means being a capable, thoughtful, and trustworthy person, someone who is always conscious of what is happening around him and will take action when needed. I would also say that you don't have to have an office job to care about your clothes. If you do physical work, insist on a proper, well-made work uniform and take good care of it. You get what you pay for. Well-made work clothes improve the image of the company while taking good care of the working man in all environments. I have great respect for anyone who clearly shows he has pride in his work. Also, you can wear your work clothes for the physical work you do in the day and then change in the evening to go out for dinner or just grab a drink with friends. The first rule is: don't wear to work or on the street the same clothes that you'd feel comfy sleeping in! (no sweatpants and hoodies please!). If you just wear a clean, collared shirt you're already miles ahead!

Great video again. I like your mention of price. Dressing in classic menswear like suit and spots jacket combinations is far cheaper than in the more common sweatpants, flip flops, and athletic t shirt more commonly seen. Just this past week I picked up a very nice J. Press Grey Pinstripe Suit for $7 at a thrift store. Dry cleaning cost me $12. Then I let down the pants hem. Total cost of suit $19. In comparison a cheap mall t shirt cost around $25 to $30. I saved $6 and have a nice set of clothing that will last until I have grandchildren.

Jordan Belfort is also big on dressing well as a means of reinforcing your persuasiveness and respectability with people. And while Belfort doesn't do this himself, he's also pointed out that some really hardcore salesmen dress up all the time, even on weekends, just to maintain their mental state and to always feel comfortable in their work clothes. Very much like method acting.

Ive been dressing up for about 3 months now just simple things like polos and sports jackets which is more dressy then what most people in my area and work wear and last week I dressed down jeans and t shirt for 1 dat as I was getting my hair cut and didn't care as I was just going to get hair in the shirt anyway. The whole time I was out I felt like I had forgotten something. I had forgotten to dress up. @Gentleman's Gazette Thank you for the tips I don't think I can go back to dressing down anymore.

I like that you say people approach you that perhaps you would not initially approach. I am somewhat shy as a female, and I feel inspired that dressing better may help me meet people and have them approach me first. I am friendly at the point that I actually meet someone, I just do not initiate.

Such a wonderful channel. Every time I hear that intro, makes me want to dress up and smoke a cigar, while reading by the fireplace. That said, I must agree with the point on confidence: generally taking care of oneself, spending time getting ready, contributes strongly to that. Now, I've never been a fan of suits, I used to see them as trivial, penguin-looking, and they gave me an impression of lack of originality, but, as this channel convinced me, it was mostly due to ignorance. I do think, however, that it's better to dress down properly, than dress up poorly / distastefully. Anyway, glad I'm subscribed.

Hey, Raphael. How are you? I found your channel 2 weeks ago and I think I've already watched all your videos. Simply amazing! Congratulations. You've once said your parents are from Brazil. Do you speak portuguese? I'm from Rio de Janeiro, but now living in Portugal. I have to build my wardrobe from scratch, I have just a few pieces of clothes, formal or casual. I love the idea of dressing-up - I follow Aaron Marino since the begining of his channel - but I confess I'm lazy. In Brazil, flip-flops and shorts are pretty much everything you need, but in Europe the standard is higher (and I appreciate it). My doubt is: When are we "allowed" to dress down? I work at home, so I don't have to dress-up in a daily basis and I just go sloppy everywhere. Thank you very much and keep going with this great work! You are a great inspiration.

Extremely well-done and knowledgeable video on how men should dress! I like dressing up when it's called for and... YES! Thank you...When you dress up it shows respect for the other person too! And YES! people respect you more dressed up than dressed down! And you often feel better about yourself dressed up! People ask me for money all the time visiting New York because I am usually in a nice suit, and They think I have Money! I even went to Atlantic City several years ago with my girlfriend. In the morning we wore shirt and jeans but at night we both were dressed up. I wore a black suit and she wore a mini-skirt and heels. Hopefully societies men can start dressing up a little more than they do now! Great channel.
