Here's what I have. visibility, plan to be cold, no group rides, no alcohol, don't ride sick, avoid the night, avoid rain, lane splitting us caution, no racing, don't be aggressive, assume everyone wants to kill you. 360 awareness. I agree with all but in Pa lane splitting is illegal, other states too. Car drivers are not used to it. In NJ I can imaging a guy swerving into you. Speed, lack of protective gear, booze and experience probably kill the most.

Yup - that's pretty much right. Mostly targeted to newer riders, younger riders, or both.

I'm 50/50 on getting a used Sportster or used Bonneville. Just can't decide

I like the Sportster. I rented three different ones, two 1200 's and one 900. I also rented the Triumph Street Twin and the Bonneville T120. In the end the Bonny had four key things that closed it for me: a sixth gear for highway riding, twin analog clocks for tac and speed, very good handling qualities and low maintenance. The Sportster did not have those things. So I went with the Bonnie. But you may decide other things are important and go a different way.
