I stumbled on your video and subscribed after you finished tip #3. I agree with you 100% and am so happy to hear someone else voice my thoughts and beliefs so clearly. I have been in special ed for about a decade and I can't stand listening to other teachers complain about their class or their jobs because they don't do these things, or don't think that they are important, or that they are as significant as they are. And I hear it all.the.time. As the teacher, you're the only one capable of making it better...it's not about everyone or everything else. There are so many things that are fabulous about this video! Thanks for putting this out there!

I’m an autistic adult and getting ready to homeschool my autistic kids. I came upon this video and clicked with hesitation because most people I’ve met who advertise that they work with autistic kids usually don’t under anything about the autistic experience. I hit subscribe after #2! I’m 33 and I use visual aides in my home to help me function better. I started using visual communication posters and hygiene charts with my first when she was a toddler. Thank you for understanding this need. It doesn’t stop just because a person has learned a routine. There are days when I have very poor working memory and I rely on those visuals.

@Cindy - Aww Thanks Cindy! That means so much ❤️️. And we ALL use visuals all the time (if you could see my wall of calendars and post it notes). I'm glad you clicked and subscribed. Thanks!

Thank you for this. I’m a second year SPED teacher, my first year was inclusion with a handful of identified ED students. I was moved into a behavior self contained AU unit for this year and I’m absolutely unprepared. I’m fortunate enough to have spent time substituting so I know them, which is a blessing and a curse (I know the inconsistencies from last year and the resulting behaviors). Furthermore, I’m blessed to be provided with a grant that gives us hands on training and I get to be the pilot. I’m still scared going in, but I’m preparing myself with videos for tips and tricks. Your confidence and advice is priceless to me.

@Aristes - You are going to be fine... It's going to be tough a times, but you can do it. Just keep at it, stay consistent, and pack your patience. Good Luck! 🍀

Wow! She was SO RIGHT about everything in this video. I started the year doing #1-8. It didn't take long before chaos ensued and I had to revamp my entire outlook on my self-contained classroom. Ten months later, there are still challenges but it is 100% better than when I started. THIS VIDEO SHOULD BE SHOWN TO EVERY TEACHER WHO IS NEW TO SPECIAL EDUCATION. Thanks for the video!

As a first year teacher in a self contained prek class & this just made me feel SOOOO much better. I’ve been crazy nervous that I’m going to fail & i after watching this my heart feels lighter - I don’t do any of these things or I’m actually planning to do the exact opposite . (As I’m currently 20 pages deep in lamination paper making visuals).

@Kayla Bailey - Ha! Only twenty... lol. It's hard teaching in spec, especially as a new teacher with all the working parts. If you avoid these ways to fail, you'll be off to a great teaching career! Good Luck ❤️️.

I am trying to advocate for my daughter's education. I found out this Friday that the district has pulled their contract with the school that she goes to for no reason. It only affects her.She really took off last year and these people have been working with her for three years. They never called, sent a letter, or anything. I am not ok with it. She's semi verbal now and her aides are amazing. It's not ok and I am going to advocate for her to attend the school and therapist that has been working with her since she was 3. Thank you for your video!

@Megan Parsons - I'm so sorry to hear that. Truly. I hope you're able to make headway and get the right services for your daughter. It's hard because we do see that students can take off later than neurotypical peers. Good Luck!

Super great tips. I agree with every one of these. Mandatory watching for every new teacher to keep bad habits from forming AND as teachers are successful they will continue to LOVE what they do.

I wish I had watched this video at the start of the school year. I am going to work on making each of these happen today. I am first-year, self-contained, and pre-k.

Really useful and thoughtful points. As a parent, this is good insight for questions I need to be asking. We are fairly new to special education (son going to K in the fall, been in special education preK for two years) so I appreciate all the information on your site and your videos. Thanks you!!

Glad it was helpful! And don't be afraid to share this video with your kid's teacher or have conversations about some of the strategies they are using in the classroom. It is essential for success and those foundational skills stay with a kid- so starting young matters! Good Luck!

Inconsistency in my group homes got everyone into envy and competition. A few rules, 1000 expectations. As a "well behaved rebel" I often pointed this out to the staff when I was living there. They were teenagers, and they did NOT have significant intellectual delays. For self work it's an interesting thought bubble. What is inconsistent to me? Does my consistency compel myself to move forward? When do I have to change?

So glad I found your channel! A lot of good tips. I just started homeschooling my non- verbal autistic daughter..kindergarten. Where can I find the boards you use? Token board pics, pec sheets, etc.

I have such a hard to posting visuals in my classroom because my students tear them up! I have a large visual schedule and I did have things labeled but they dont survive.
@NoodleNook4 жыл бұрын
You can incorporate visuals with physical gestures to connect the two- then you can gesture even when paper visuals aren't available. Remember, gestures are visual cues too ;)

Hey I know you posted this over a year ago but I thought I'd message and see if you actually see this. I'm an Early Interventionist and work with several kiddos (toddlers) who have autism. I've been having some difficulty finding resources about working with toddlers with autism and was wondering if you knew of any. I have been using videos like this to learn more but don't know how much transfers into the toddler years and if there are any other tips that might be helpful. If you see this please let me know! Any advise is so appreciated. I want to do the best I can in serving my kiddos and the more I know and prepare the better I can do that.

Hey Ash! I am so sorry I have not replied until now - your comment got held up in my review tab and I never saw it. How are things going with the toddlers? Tell you what, ask me three of your most burning questions and I will address one in a video or blog post. Email me at ajones@noodlenook.net Hope all is well 🤗.

Don't be shamed sharing this video with your son's teacher... hopefully they watch it. Even if they are dismissive about it, seeing this may inspire just one change... which is better than no changes at all. I also think support staff can benefit from seeing this too. Good Luck!
