The problem I have is that the sea where I sail tends to be choppy so it is hard to complete the gybe going down the wave - the waves are too short.

Hi I'm 12 and getting used to my radial, do you have any tips on an easy way to stop the main sheet getting stuck on the corner when tacking

It's all timing. The instant the sheet starts to to slack and the boom is starting to move to the new side, give the sheet a big sharp pull to get it to hop up into the air. This way when it moves to the new side, it'll be above the corner of stern.

Other than giving a sharp pull as Morgan said, you can also give a "push" to the part of the sheet that goes from the boat to the boom (the front) when the boom is passing. Obviously, you have to let it go when you finish the jijbe. If you do these two things correctly, there is 0% chance to get the sheet stuck on the back of the boat.
