@snezstar6 ай бұрын
I averaged ~170 about a year and a few months into learning how to bowl, played the 2022 nationals pattern (as opposed to the house pattern) and averaged 136. very first 3 games on this league now (house pattern) averaged 181, all 3 could've been 200+ but messed up on one frame (again, spares are important). now 9 games in and avg is about 170-180. it makes a huge difference bowling on a harder pattern, and i was able to see what hurts my bowling and what i need to work on.

ye my avg dropped by 30 pins, not only does it force me to be more accurate, it makes spare shooting harder cause i more often leave splits

My average dropped 30 - 40 pins to low 200s, nothing to sneeze at, but not 230s and 240s regularly. (house average 238, phantom average 241)

Great stuff guys! Pro bowlers are the way they are because of how much they bowl, practicing with purpose, learning, working out, getting coached and working with sports psychologists to sharpen their mental game. This is their profession. If someone spent 40-45 hours per week workimg on their game, bowling in tournaments, and practicing all over the place, they would eventually get better. Thanks for this segment.
@TheAnlem6 ай бұрын
I'm just a beginner bowler, but I have found out the #4: practice with purpose has been very useful for me. Everytime I go to the bowling alley, I try to concentrate on maybe one or two things that needs to get better. It could be release, it could be balance or it could be steps. It's the only way if you really want to learn something.
@natedawg196 ай бұрын
I loved the point you mentioned with “Bowling at Different Centers”. That reminded me when I was a member of the Manhattan High School Indians Bowling Team in Manhattan, Kansas. One of our tournaments was in Topeka (West Ridge Lanes) and they had a HEAVY oil pattern, and it took me a bit to figure out the pattern. My home alley was FAR lighter than West Ridge that I got myself a bowling ball to help out with a heavy oil pattern.

@tyfrank34275 ай бұрын
That was excellent advice. I bowled for a few years and competed in many tournaments up to the national level. Here in Canada, we bowl 5 pin which is a small ball game and hook balls are actually disadvantageous. But aside from that, it's great advice for all bowling games, and even though in 5 pin you're not deliberately throwing hook balls, you still have to adapt to how well the lane is oiled as the ball does move a bit. Targeted practice, and practicing in different houses is a really good advice, even using different balls. Because you're straight shooting, you don't need 15 balls but 2 sets is nice. It's a much harder game than standard tenpin and all splits are nearly impossible to spare. If one set any of the splits on all lanes on a 48 lane house, I'd be shocked if you could make one. Especially the most frustrating headpin split.
@squidly21126 ай бұрын
Oh, I love your suggestion about balls! .. I now have a 12 ball arsenal .. I usually take 9 of them to the lanes when I practice. And yes, I take 9 of them because I throw 9 of them during practice. I have so many bowling balls for just exactly why you said .. so I can learn them! .. they all react differently under different conditions. I am trying to learn how they react for each condition and when the lanes transition. I am also using them to learn how to control my shots by throwing the completely wrong ball for the condition, but doing things to try to strike anyway. Basically, get myself out of my comfort zone and do what I can to make it work. Throw my strongest ball on a dry lane and learn to control going up the back of the ball, and things like that. I also frequently will play 1 game using my plastic spare ball, playing from the gutter and hooking my plastic ball into the pocket. I find this helps me to gain accuracy, especially accuracy when trying to crank as high of rev rate as I can. While practicing with the spare ball, I will also try to throw as fast as I can, as much rev rate as I can, and hit 100% dead center of my target board.
@MrGilfred2 ай бұрын
When I was bowling I did visit two different centers per week. But that two centers a week didn't happen during my high school years it was long after high school when I bowled at two different centers IIRC. The only times I remember missing spares badly was on the nights that I did a poor job of playing the lanes properly by making good adjustments. When I bowled I had a 170 average that I tried to keep shooting every night I bowled and was a little upset if I shot under it and glad when I was over it. I think that my mental game would be stronger because I would build myself up where nothing would bother me or keep me from making an accurate shot. Where the only thing that would hurt me is if I didn't play the lane properly. Which would also translate in me missing spares as well.

Not just practice, but practice the RIGHT things. I learned this from 30 years of competitive golf. The same holds true for bowling. I am 61yrs old, just started bowling 2yrs ago and I now have an average right about 200. Not bad for 2yrs of bowling. I practice quite a bit. Last Friday, 26 games straight (ok, that's a bit much, and I felt it). Tonight, while my bowling buddy is playing in his league, I will practice and then practice with him and some other buddies afterward into the wee hours. During winter I bowl on 3 leagues, two USBC, one unsanctioned. I typically try to get to the lanes at least once or twice per week during winter while bowling leagues as well. That's 4-5 days of bowling per week. During summer, I am just on 1 USBC league and I practice 2-3 days per week (just too much other stuff going on during summer).

Something most people miss about rev rate. Any energy you put into a ball will come out when the ball hits the pins. High rev rate plus high speed means more energy stored in the ball, and more energy released when it hits. 💥

Been messing around with 2 hand. Normal 1 hander...im about feet 28 to 30. 20 to 18 arrows. Bout 7 for turn over. Got a absolute power for my house fresh. Im thinking a nu or a full urethane to mess around with it becuase my speed is down 2 hands. 14.5 for 1 hand like 13 for 2. Any reccomends from anyone. Been throwing a soaked fast pitch. Thinking pitch black
@shaunmcisaac7826 ай бұрын
When my house burned down and I was racing to save what I could, I initially picked up my pitch black, realized my mistake and then threw it back into the burning building. Better to work on footspeed than trying to find a new ball for 2H. At least initially. If you can't get faster and need more length then break out the sanding pads + polish, put something (not urethane) up to 5500+ grit. Balls with that glossy of a surface - assuming lanes aren't deserts - should not react until they're off the pattern completely. Assuming the house oils all or nearly all the way to the foul line, you might get good results releasing the ball lower... think skipping a stone on a pond... rather than a more upright release where the ball is dropping from a higher release point and can "dig in" on contact with the lane bed.
@jmfoty42806 ай бұрын
If I could add something... I would say, "Get a spinner and add/subtract surface to your equipment so you know which surfaces are most effective at which houses and patterns. It is part of knowing your bowling balls."
@whozeppelin2246 ай бұрын
Can't say enough about making your spares. Last year in my first state tournament, I missed so many spares, didn't shoot above 200 at all and didn't come close to being satisfied. After a year of practice, I didn't miss a single makeable this year at states, averaged 200 and currently sit in the top 30 overall. Find a system that works for you and make your spares! also, don't worry yourself with what your score is during practice. It's practice!

He is progressing quite well. Has bowled five 300 games in the past 3 or 4 weeks. I learn a LOT by bowling with him. Another tip for folks, try to bowl with people who are better than you! .. you can learn a lot! .. I did this in golf until I was better than everyone else. I live in KC Metro, in 2018 my goal was to (at that time...) bowl at every center within 50 miles the downtown loop. I did. Man! Was it an eye opener! From my home alley at the time in Belton, MO to Gladstone, KCK, Blue Springs, Lenexa and more. I went to them all. Some of which sadly have closed their doors due to COVID... I even got to bowl on OG wood lanes in a small town NE of Liberty, MO called Richmond, MO. Man was that a shocker! I was frustrated, confused and annoyed. I could barely average 120 across 3 games! The point of that was to see what other lanes across town felt like. Which centers were similar, and different which ones I liked and didn't. I found new favorites that day in far away places. Now, I live in KCK and not SKC at my parents. I have less free time but I still manage to get out and bowl about once a month. Much less than when I was in college, were I bowled 3 times a week! I got decent very decent. For a lefty guy who didn't join his first league until 2021. In that league the years of practice, frustration, confusion managed to earn me an average of 195. This is to say that Packy is right. (Of course he is. He's a pro...) I followed these steps before I even realized I was doing them. Now I'm hearing from a pro more-or-less exactly what I went through.

I bowl about 4 to 5 times a week. And what he says is right. You have to have the experiences of losing, sometimes in a heartbreaking fashion. Sport shots will make you better. Bowl on every shot you can. On house shot only try to hit one board. My bad shots arent has bad has they used to be. Come less often. Takes time but we'll get there.

I think a tip a lot of people don't get is one bad shot cant ruin your game. Its very easy to look at a shot you made that hit the pocket and left an 8 pin or missing an easy spare and just letting that get to your head. An open or an unlucky break for a strike ruining your turkey isnt the end of the game. You can always recover. I have a real life example of a tournament I bowled that I still did phenomenal at while I had a terrible game. So It pennsylvania highschools we would bowl regionals and in my regionals in west penn I shot a like 150 game which is practically a death sentence with how good these bowlers are. I decided to not let that get to me and finish out. After game 2 which was my 150 I didn't shoot below a 215 with even 2 225 and ended up making 10th place which was enough to qualify for states and I did it by 10 pins. If I missed 1 more spare or was off 1 more strike I wouldve missed my chance at states. It would've been easy to check out and say i'm cooked and go home but I didn't but most people tend to let it get to them and they bowl bad.

Spare shooting is mostly about mental focus and not letting the "ring 10" get in your head. Figure out something that works for you - plastic ball hard and straight, back up ball, whatever - and practice it a few dozen games over the course of a season. You can average 180 or so just banging out spares. And 180 will put you way above the typical player.

@squidly21126 ай бұрын
Oh, sorry to spam the comments, but this is so interesting. I would also suggest not being afraid to try new things. For example, a friend of mine and I (he's much better than I) were playing on a "Red Square" pattern (very difficult pattern, relatively dry in the middle with oil on the sides, tough!) .. anyway, I beat him one game because I used my plastic spare ball and I could throw it up the 10 board arrow and hook it right into the pocket. It was unconventional but it worked really well. My friend didn't like it, because I beat him with a spare ball .. LOL
@MrGilfred2 ай бұрын
If I had to bowl on professional patterns and love to hook the ball out of the house, meaning almost gutter to gutter then yeah I would need a super high rev rate. I can guarantee you there were nights when I was able to strike very well playing a straight down the second arrow standing at about the middle of the lane with a very gentle hook into the right hand side pocket. I never had to hook the ball from gutter to gutter. I want you to realize that telling people that they have to always play inside with a huge hook is gonna cost them a lot of matches even at the pro level. I remember pros on TV that won with a straighter shot compared to their opponent. Then when their opponent straightened out his shot he got the same results more strikes, even though he lost the game. Accuracy was important to me. There were plenty of nights that at the after school league that Camelot Bowl had for me that I just didn't figure the lanes out properly that night. If you don't play the lanes right you will have low scores which I did do. But my accuracy was still high, meaning that I would be able to hit whatever arrow or board that I wanted to roll the ball over. It was because I kept one fundamental part of my game I always kept my shoulders and hips aligned with my target and allowed my arm swing to be natural and relaxed. When I was bowling I bowled at least twice a week for a total of six games a week and it showed that it payed off in the long run. During my after school league during my high school years my team won third place the first year and first in the second year. My versatility came not from the same area as normal pros would. Mine came from using a variety of copies of pro bowler's styles. I had my version of a lot of different pros for a variety of affects. If I needed better break point control then I would use my right hand version of Earl Anthony. If I needed a straighter down and in shot with good speed then I would use my version of Dick Weber. if the lanes were tight and I needed to hook the ball more but still have good loft and speed then i would use Marshall Holman. So depending on what I needed for the night I was like a golfer with many clubs (styles) in my bag. I only needed one bowling ball because I was only playing on house patterns. That is right the Brunswick Black Beauty is the ball that I used. I haven't been bowling in over 20 years and no longer have my ball, bag, shoes, etc...I would only get two bowling balls if I were to return to bowling, one for spares and the other for strikes unless there is a way to have one ball fits all. I would do that unless I knew I was gonna turn pro which would be unlikely. I would want to have done that as a much younger man. So telling amateur bowlers that are not aspiring to be pros to get six balls is not a good idea.
