Great video. Three years or so working with Power Bi, can't stress the importance of spending a LOT of time in the query editor, Power Query, before putting any slicers or visual down on the canvas. Obviously when you're starting out, you want to create visuals of your data. That's important to see your own development happening in front of your eyes. However, as the projects get bigger and you begin to pull in more datasets to your model, spending time in the query editor manipulating your data will pay off down the road. Also, don't be afraid to wipe everything off the canvas if it's not working the way you want it to and go back to the query editor to get it working.

This is 100% spot on. Finance Excel people, if you get hooked and do all of this, your role is going to change... It did take all of this for me to grow. For me, I'd stress: 1. Don’t discount learning more about power query, there are amazing prep abilities here... also, 2. Start showing your employer what is possible. When you get support to buy the books, take courses, go to conferences, don’t hesitate just do it!! . I’m hooked and learning, still sticking my neck out... having a blast :) and the online community has been VERY supportive :)

Adam, thanks for the tips. Here' one for your consideration. Start by reading a Getting Started With or similar introduction to PowerBI book and do all the examples. When you are starting out, It is a great way to avoid frustration with doing the basics.

1:19 ...and because PBI is monthly updated, so you need to keep up to date. Second, there is a huge community creating content and ways to work our that you need to follow and Third, every week at work something new come up and you will need to learn how to do it. PBI has a lot of features and functionalities or ways to do stuff that I don't thing someone knows 100% the features.

So great to hear somebody admit it: "It's (you're) going to suck at first!" I have been doing this part time for four years, and I have a long way to go. All the ". . . in a day" training can create self-doubt. One more thing to know, though. Know your business. Technically astute people can waste months developing beautiful reports with little business value.

Couldn't agree with this more, after doing this for about 3 years, on and off, the first few months are really hard. Lot's of questions like "I know what I want to do, but I don't know where to do it". It does get easier the more you do it. I still try to format the decimal places in a visual before remembering "Nope, you click on the field to set the number of decimals". These videos help! It's like working out, the more you do it, the easier it get's. Remember, your brain is a muscle too! 😂

Couldn't agree more on all those points. Having a crystal clear understanding on the directions of the relationships and how that affects your data model and which table will ultimately get you to the exact visual/metrics you need is a must to be successful in report creation in PBI. Without perseverance and motivation this work will never be easy! I am so glad that Adam brings this up as a point! No one has talked about it in PBI lectures, great job!

Just about to start with Power BI. I’ve been a business controller/financial analyst for ten years building up my own reports and dashboards in excel. But now its time to develop myself and learn something new. A friend suggest learning power query and power pivot first? Is this true?

Thanks for the great feedback!! I have incorporated most of your recommendations and I can attest that it helps tremendously. Having that person that you can bounce ideas off is such a big help. Researching too. Just recently I found the answer I was looking for in a KZbin video where the young man spoke Hindu. So don't shy away from videos that are in different language because the information is universal. 😆

Extreme amount of truth in this video. Learning the various components (power query, DAX, visuals, and Service) is overwhelming. My advice start out with a small project - go thru the complete process, before starting a second or more difficult project. Thank you for the confidence builder!
