i like to use an offcut of decking as a story rod, i put one measured line of fasteners in, then scribe that spacing onto the offcut and notch them on the drop saw. then line up the edge of the board with the screws in the module boards, make sure the notches look rightly placed on the decking and then just run the drill bit down each notch. super fast and no pencil lines to rub out, and the notches also help stop the bit from wandering at all

Always good listening to a kiwi talk about ‘decks’. I build on average 5-6 decks per year and fix the same amount each year. Most common issue is rotted joists that could so easily be avoided by putting a barrier on top (it’s protect a deck here in Oz). Ps is that ‘quilia’? Timber what we call ‘merbau’?

Does gravel beneath a deck help prevent moisture buildup? Thanks! All way from toronto Canada.

Am interested in the Spax screws you use. I have two rooms which need new floorboards. I was originally going to do the old-fashioned thing of brad-nailing, but really like the little round TX screw heads of the Spax - in stainless steel they would look like tiny jewels on the floor. Am I right in saying you use the Spax Step Drill 4 with these screws? I'm looking at a tidy finish with screw head tops just under the board face.

Hello Scott a Kiwi here who understands our accent! What is the bit you use that looks like it gives a round countersink for the stainless deck screws 2:22 Do you angle the screws slightly? What is the drive head type. I have used the square drive heads but if you are going into any degree of hard wood the bit can get rounded or the hole in the screw head pretty quickly. Lastly if a crew is say a 3.15mm, what drill bit size pilot hole do you typically use?
@georgebliss76744 жыл бұрын
Great video, as always! Just two thoughts, having installed many tropical hardwood decks here in New England; don't use trim head fasteners (stainless or coated). The head of the screw literally is a washer, holding the board to the framing member. If you do not want them to be seen then countersink and bung them. It's the OG hidden fastening system. Secondly, though stain may (I have my doubts) act as an end grain sealant, it's effective lifespan is short (you, yourself acknowledge this repeatedly). Why not use a product such as Anchor Seal? It is made specifically for this purpose. Anyway, again, nice vid. Be well
@andrewmason40044 жыл бұрын
With the screws Scott showed surely the head wasn’t much acting as a washer holding the board, the set of threads under it were?
