I've been watching a bit of bike content recently... I'm 53 so old and fat and just got myself a hybrid to get myself about and ditch the car, I live in Southport Merseyside at the moment but spent the majority of my life around Somerset and working in and around Taunton... So lovely to watch this video, I miss home!!

Aw you should head back (in the summer!) and do some riding around there on your hybrid :-D It is a lovely area.

Yes KP! Def the right idea - I've been meaning to add a few words on your Brittany/Normandy vid's, as that's where I've been doing my summer riding. Sooo nice when you can take a train ride into the wind, and have a long, glorious downwind megaride back again. Especially good with the SNCF and the French bike network!

I've wondered about doing this in France, is it easy(ier) to get bikes on trains? I'd have big panniers with me in France, which complicates things slightly. I'd love to cycle tour there on a linear route!

Lovely ride Kitiara. As a coffee shop cruiser this appealed to me. I've never tried getting on a train and riding home, so I'll have to give it a go.

Do it, I was so pleased how different it felt to the ol' circular ride!

I did an archaeological dig in Taunton when I was at uni - only discovery we made in three weeks was that the farm next door made THE best and cheapest scrumpy ever... Totally agree with you about linear rides - you kind of just have to carry on. I tend to do circular rides and there's always the option to cut it short. Even when I'm enjoying the ride there's always that niggling away at the back of my mind. I have a mate's birthday party in east London in a fortnight and I was half-heartedly considering cycling up from Hampshire a) just to get the miles in and b) because I don't get to do linear rides that much. Having watched this I think I've decided to do it. I'll thank/blame you later.

Ah wicked! I hope you have a great ride up there - feel free to both blame and/or thank me later :-D. Also, scrumpy discoveries are surely valid science too, I hope that's what you wrote up in your field trip report.

Good ride. I find mixed terrain like that can be exhausting, so tend to stick to proper roads which is much faster (you can go even further) and better if you encounter any major mechanical problems. Road bikes also batter your body on rough surfaces which adds to tiredness.

Linear routes are a buzz. My favourite. I choose the direction for the tailwind. In the shed is a big basket of lights all price ranges and they are all meh. So i'll go with a spare but prefer the battery type [aa] as you can always buy those if power goes. Some kind of isotonic gel like SIS is great for the 'last hour' or when needing a booster rooster. UK roads are so bad not sure if road tyres are ever an option for adventure cycling. Nice well planned route to include a lunch town/bail train back option.

@@trendtraderx I agree about AA battery lights being the safer choice, Poundland used to sell them for, er, a quid and the batteries would last for months.

Interesting, I hadn't even considered battery-powered lights but that makes so much sense. I'll definitely invest in one and take a spare regardless. Good tip! And yup, definitely should've taken a gel and planned a little better in that regard. I get caught up with just wanting to get home that I forget I still need to fuel that last hour.

Ha! Back in the 90s I was an actor and was once hired to be in an episode of Brum. Unfortunately, though, on the day of the shoot (outside Birmingham Rep Theatre) I developed a very sore throat and just looked in pain the whole time, so I couldn’t do it 😢 There’s no doubt, though, that if I had been able to do it I’d be a Hollywood megastar by now. 😂😂😂 #NoIWoudnt 😅 It was fascinating to watch the two guys remotely controlling Brum, though - one controlling the driving, the other controlling Brum’s doors (arms) and headlights (eyes)..

What a nice region… My impression is, that the state of roads in general is not the best. Isn’t it? Just a little side note: I feel a little uncomfortable, when people with sunglasses try to speak to me over a certain period of time. It sounds a little bit drastic, but it feels like talking with a wall. It’s hard on the bike, but maybe, you could take your glasses down from time to time. Nice vid. Have a good night.

The state of the roads is so bad! Even quite heavily trafficked roads can be pretty rubbish surface. Thanks for the side note, I'll try to remember and take them off sometimes :-D
