The being direct thing is mostly a cultural issue. As a german myself, i face that issue a lot. What i try to do, is i always try to be positive and consteuctive without lying. For example say something positive and they tell the person i'm critsising something they can do better next time, it's ok to be direct, just keep it real, and say something positive again.
