26:36 Call of Duty hate - the XM4 from COD is not real. I hate it. I can't believe I forgot to mention the M4 side sling mount was also developed under the XM4 program. I didn't have the side sling mount on this one due to the light mount, but as you can see i''ve switched it out to a more generic surefire barrel mount and will be adding the side sling mount back on.

I’d argue that the xm4 was in tribute to their “commando” ar that was even more out of place in the original cod blackops, being a flat top (note, for some reason completely slick top and for some reason except for the Troy BUIS on it…in the 70’s) that didn’t even make sense then, as the only flat top experiment then was the 656, and that was ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.

Just purchased three, old school uppers with built in carry handle from Brownells. Cost around $159. Going to build two of the uppers with an 11.5" & 12.5" barrel. And throw it on two ambi lowers. Just a cool old school shorty. Before anyone gets on me regarding an "illegal" SBR. I do have my FFL: 3, 7, &10/SOT. Recently got a letter of interest from a TN Sheriffs Office....so will make the build in select fire and another one in semi auto.

Henry's flashlight mount reminds me of one setup a few guys I knew had for MOUT/CQB in the early 1990s. There was a sergeant I knew who was taking beat up M7 bayonets, cutting off the blade and trimming the guard opposite the muzzle ring, and making a mount that would take a MiniMag flashlight - the idea being that the unit attaching like a bayonet meant you could pop it on or off as needed. The onky reason i didnt get one myself was i was too cheap to pay the $50 or so he charged.

During my 23 years in Special Forces I carried a M16A1 1985-1988 and then CAR 15 until we had to turn them in for M4s. My team mates and I didn't want to give up our CAR15s, yes, they rattled alot but accurate and would hit where the front sight post was and never jammed. We had lot of serious issues with the first SOPMOD M4s with cracks and jams.

It has the big surefire 500 handguards on it, I guess swat or some of then guys put that on there. I can't comment on the performance of these rifles (maybe one day I'll be able to visit the US and have one hell of a range day), but to me there's something special about the transitional eras of firearms development (the 20s and 50s as well, but the late 80s to 90s especially) and what came out of them, and it's real cool seeing stuff like this and the M16A2 in action. The perfect mix of form and function. Definitely seems like the retro stuff's regaining popularity in the US nowadays.

The flat top upper was first somewhat standardized by the Canadian C7A1 rifle and C8A2 Carbine, via a 14 slot weaver rail that is not the same as the standard 1913 pic rail uppers that we have now. The Canadian Armed Forces adopted the C7A1 equipped with the Elcan C79 optic for regular troop use in the early 90s, predating the widespread adoption of the M4 and M4A1 carbines and M16A4 rifles.

I used a brand new M16a4 in Iraq in 2004. We had used old beat up M16A2's in Iraq in 2003. I did some training with the Canadians in the UK in 2005. I remember looking at their rifles and thinking, "why didn't we just adopt the C7?" It was lighter, collapsible stock, flat top with an optic and a short rail at the front of the handguard to mount a light. The weight felt about half that of an M16A4. The C7 was what I wanted the M16a4 to be. That was my first exposure to Colt Canada, I was jealous.
@burnyburnoutze2nd
@burnyburnoutze2nd Жыл бұрын
@@LDB670 that was the C7A2, which is exactly as you described. It's the rifle I'm used to as a currently serving CAF infanteer. I really think the idea of a 20 inch rifle upper with a carbine lower w/ H2 weighed buffer is among the most optimal setups for a AR-15 type rifle in 5.56.

When I turned 18 back in 1988, I went to my local gun dealer who was an official Colt distributor and certified Colt Armorer. For some reason, I didn't want a carbine. I bought the marketing hype that the HBAR was the way to go. The Steyr AUG was also a choice. Hmm. $1000 for a Steyr AUG or $800 for an HBAR (the standard profile AR-15A2 was $600, I think the carbine was $650). I went home with the HBAR and the Colt .22 LR conversion kit they sold at the time, ordered a carry handle scope mount from B-Square, and bought a Tasco POS scope. Now I really wish I had gotten a carbine, but I favor mid-length gas systems on my current guns.

On the rant at the end, I refuse to use something in a game if it is janky and inaccurate to what its supposed to be (looking at you every developer who removed the front sight of a MP5/G3/UMP/M16) because I get distracted by how annoyed I am at it. Even if its the meta weapon of the day, I can't do it. Is it petty? Probably, it is just a game. Am I alone? I bloody well hope not! *Insert Jonathon Ferguson dying inside face here* - Dylan

In original documents, this was the M4. but it rapidly was changed to a flat top, still called the M4, but the upper receiver was what we all recognize now. It was a burst weapon, and the M4A1 designation reflected a change back to safe/semi/full. Another nickname for this gun was the Aby Dhabi carbine, as apparently a special batch was built and sold to Saudi Arabia early on in the gun's genesis. I actually built one of these awhile back with a SOCOM barrel and a LMG upper with no forward assist. Sorry now I parted it out...

We had these M727 carnines like that in 5th SFG in the early 90's. We used the same light you have on yours, or the same light but in a mount that clamped onto the front sight. All our carbines had vintage viet nam era A1 lowers. I was told those guns were all built at Anniston- this was before Crane started doing their thing with SOF. We would mount our old aimpoint 5000 or BLTZ 4x scope on a ARMS mount to the carry handle. We replaced the included nut on the mount with a nylock bolt from the local hardware store. I rigged an old MP5 sling on my gun, some guys would use 2 qt canteen straps. We also had a very early version of the PAC 4 that was a huge flipping cylinder that mounted in the underside of the carry handle, and it sat parallell to the handguards- and was a real POS. All our 727 type carbines and any remaining M16's were handed in late 1993 and exchanged for the brand new M4A1. Of course, all the SOPMOD optics, rails, etc. wasn't available up front, so we went to Haiti with the new M4's but we were still using the old Aimpoint 5000 in the carry handle and the old lights down there. I kind of miss that old 727.

So, how they settled on 14.5 had to do with concussion without a suppressor. That was the length they found to be as short as possible without excessive concussion. The thought that went in to the M4 though was amazing and was truly the rifle that advanced combat rifles. There’s a reason why over 20 years later it’s still the standard.

20" meat chopper requires a bit more strength, dexterity and spatial awareness, true enough. However the terminal performance advantage at close range, particularly with military ball ammunition, is pretty significant as we are talking about a velocity based cartridge. That also translates to soft point and ballistic tip ammunition, increasing its maximum terminal performance range within that 150-300 likely max engagement distance, its not all about cheating wind at 400 plus... im not doing helo insertions or mechaised operations (even though Rangers managed just fine?) im walking in the woods or holding down a angle in my house... take a page out of Canada's book for a modern 20" look at the C7. A 20" AR15 with collapsed stock is the same length as a fixed stock 16" AKM.

I'm building another 727 clone now...I had one that I'd made up until around 2018 when I sold it. Didn't think I'd have to wait more than half a decade to have access to the parts to build another one tho lol. It's more based on the Bushmaster XM-4 of the time though since that's what my old one was, only swapped to a 14.5" pencil barrel with an ADCO muzzle spacer and standard birdcage as well as an N1 stock when they were easier to find via surplus. The new one is using a PSA H&R A2 upper receiver and an old Anderson AM-15 lower I've had on hand for awhile. I have a PSA M4 Carbine lower as well as a few others to chose from but I feel like the Poverty Pony represents the build better. Times are tough and everyone is feeling it. I've got to put a few more together before I call it quits. I have spent 10 years building rifles but the market has become so flooded and overpriced I can't do this anymore. These last three AR's will be for me and that'll be the end of my gun building career *_*

When the economy improves a bit, I’m going to build every variant of the M16 I can. I am a fanatic of these guns. I was fortunate enough to carry an M4 as an infantryman in Afghanistan too. It only immortalized my love for these guns.

When I was working, I loved the integral carry handles because you could run a cable lock through the carry handle and secure the weapon so easily in my trunk. Some one might steal it, but only if they had a hacksaw or a pair of bolt cutter with them when they popped the trunk and found it. Hopefully by then, the noise would have brought me out or had someone take notice.

I remember seeing a lot of photos from LEO's that got the commercial versions of M-4's that were AR-15's with M-4 barrels, but semi-auto only in flat top and carry handle models that were hot in the 00's and teens. I forget what the model number was, but they were very hard for regular people to get, even with SBR paperwork at the time. If a regular person got one, some cops would give them a hard time, thinking they were LEO exclusive. The photos that were shared, some of the brand new model rifles had old teardrop shaped forward assists, Colt Commando style buttstocks, all sorts of new, old stock parts. During all the bankruptcies Colt and their various subgroups went through back then, all the parts were put into boxes so you had Vietnam era and 70's parts mixed in with the "new style" parts. Since they were making them under LEO contracts, they were just installing what they grabbed out of the box on the assembly line, making "Frankenrifles", but they met the contractual obligations, so they ran with it.

Henry, oddly enough there were several "XM-4's floating around in other A.D. units in the 90s, not many but several here and there. MTO for RTO's and in a few Bradley units for crew AKA PSG's and P.L. Unfortunately some upper leadership (BN, BDE or DIV) wouldn't allow them to be used because of the "stuck in uniformity" B.S. of everything has to be the same. A few different places I had access to and used some different than standard "M16a1/ M16a2" rifles, including XM177e2 that was good as a it could be for a young infantryman in the 80s.

Oh yes, you mentioned the XM4 from Cold war which I have never played. This brings me back to 2014/2015 when at an airsoft field I had some young kids ask me if my M16A4 w/ carry handle was the Commando from Black Ops. Another bastardized flat top AR before they were even a thing.

I think an RMR/etc gooseneck mounted on an A2 would be perfect, nobody seems to agree with me. It would do exactly the same thing as those old delta aimpoints but way less weight. Dot for hundred yards or so, nice adjustable irons beyond that. Super light and still bombproof

727 is peak. The 653 was the Model that introduced me to the CAR-15 Series. If I'm making a clone, I'd lean towards the 653, but If I have liberty in customization, flat top and flip-up front sights -May as well get an M4 then, right? True, but I want it in a 653 aesthetic while doing so. 28:07 If you see where the strap lands, it's in between the Bolt Release too. Good luck slamming that LMAO.

I see mix of these colt carbines in our Armed Forces in the Philippines. You may occasionally encounter Colt 733s, Colt 723, and Colt 727s mixed in with M16A1s, M16A2s, first gen Colt M4A1s and the newer Remington M4A1s(R4A3).

I have a 4 position tube, CAR-15 stock, carry handle A2 upper and a Bushmaster XM-15 Carbine marked lower......really if I pick up a barrel and bolt I probably have the rest in the parts bin. For years I carried A 20" carry handle Wyndam A2 in my trunk as a vehicle gun. (I'm 6'3 b.t.w) While my other shorter rifles had optics/light's and all the fizz I just loved having that old 20" anytime I may need it. I'm feeling the old itch again.........I think I may pick up a decent barrel and BCG and do an "inspired" build based on the good old Xm-4/CAR-15 14.5" era. I'll just weld a Yankee hill flash hider on and use my turbo k when needed. I love America's carbine.....I really do. All this is coming from a pretty big fan of the AK so yeah folks........the 9-hole boy's are 100% correct. It's that good.
