Yeah. But in my time, walkman was more of a thing than boombox, having a portable cassette player was more of a swag. To think those days I had to ask my dad to lend me one for short time use, and now kids ask and get iPhone or other smartphones so easily. Times sure have changed.

I went to a boot fair a month or two ago and picked up an old Sony TC-WE435 (An old hifi deck) for 2 euros. Honestly one of my favorite buys. These boomboxes are very nice for on the go but for at-home listening I would recommend a more high-end unit, as they can sound a lot better and you can avoid a lot of the wow and flutter that comes with a boombox.

Awesome a video about tapes!!! I love my cassettes, o have over 200 of them and record loads of music onto them on my high end systems. Then when I go away in a trip, I take my Sony Cassette Corded with me. Mine is similar to yours but is from about 2 maybe 3 years before. It's about 1/3 bigger and gets really loud. You'll be surprised that even at 17 and 3/4 that i've been collecting and recording tapes since early 2016. Awesome video!

I remember getting a new tape player in 2013 that was so cheap it only had a play function, not even a FF/RW. and not long into owning it the pitch screwed up, so I went with a used one from a thrift store which while still has a bit of a pitch issue (but nowhere near as bad as the "new" one) is better suited for playing tapes.

Panasonic and JVC made the best boomboxes while TDK and Maxell made the best blank tapes. I still do have a hifi Sony VCR though. It's a SLV-775HF from 1996. And, before you ask, yes, it still works perfectly fine to this very day. I also own a Sony sports cassette walkman with Dolby B NR as well. However, I am currently looking for a new cassette boombox (preferably with Dolby B, aux in, and mic in) because my walkman doesn't have recording capabilities and it would be awesome to have a working one displayed in my bedroom.

for the amount of time, in 2 weeks here in the US, you could buy like 3 boom box's , and 1/÷ is always guranteed to work. So when buying 5-10 dollar, Stereo cassette systems or boom box's, ALWAYS test them

I think for boomboxes I'd go for an 80s one, as though it'd probably be more expensive, it'd have NR and Dolby stuff and more compatibility with different tape types. I don't think I'd bother with a 90s one, really. The format was dying out by then so very few makers put out quality stuff. CDs were all the rage and cassettes were quickly being left by the wayside. Very interesting experiment, though! Maybe next time also do a take from the headphone or line out directly into a sound card or capture device, to get a better idea of the sound quality? Lovely vid, mate.

Fast forward to 2023 and, whilst I would still fix up one of these if given the opportunity (or if it was cheap), I wouldn't necessarily buy one for my personal use. Why? Because virtually no one uses tapes/cassettes any more, AM is being switched off (or has already been switched off), and FM generally doesn't give you much choice. Unless you're in a big city (e.g. London) or a town/city with plenty of community stations (e.g. Leicester/Northampton) you're probably going to get Radios 1-4, Classic FM, your local BBC, Heart FM (or Capital/Kiss/GHR if you're lucky), and that's about it. DAB or Online radio is the way forward.
