Very nice tutorial. When I first started picking, the half-diamond quickly became one of my favorite picks for its versatility, and this video demonstrates that perfectly. :)

Sightless Senshi thank you for sharing! I do not use mine too often but I do appreciate that as well. Lately I have been growing fond of my gem. It works great for setting pins, has a little bit more reach, and is great for rotating medeco keypins

HelpfulLockPicker I do love my gem as well. Very nice pick. My current favorite is Sparrows' off-set hybrid; not sure what to describe it as exactly, but I love it.

I realize this is a relatively old video, but I'm very glad to stumble upon it, because the half-diamond is kind of a secret weapon. The one shown in the video is a Petersens DCAP half-diamond and actually very small, and kind of fragile, but not as fragile is one might think. In fact, it is arguably one of the hands down most effective tools for very small locks, like travel locks on suitcases, or other miniature locks, ones that take keys that are smaller than your standard Schlage and Kwikset locks. It's also a very effective tool against dimple locks if you don't happen to have a set of flags from Sparrows, or Multipik, but that's for another video, I'm sure. Long story short, I don't carry many Petersens picks, but I have that one in my EDC kit in my pocket right now, and while it doesn't get used nearly as often as my Wave Rakes or Bijou from Law Lock Tool, it has been exactly the right tool many times when nothing else would work. I have made and use larger half-diamonds as well, but the DCAP one is a winner right out of the package and I highly recommend adding one to your EDC if you don't already have it.

Does scrubbing or raking increase damage/potential damage to a lock vs SPP?
@HelpfulLockPicker7 жыл бұрын
xderiwx it does add a little bit more wear. Mostly effects the key pins and the springs. I have personally not broken a lock myself

Would WD40 help with
@jamesthe-doctor89815 жыл бұрын
Steven Mullen WD-40 is meant mostly to prevent water damage, which is why it was named "WD," for "Water Displacer." The number "40" represents the fact that it was 40th in the line of compounds that were formulated during testing of the product. Graphite lube is meant for locks and it works well, but NEVER use graphite and WD-40 in the same lock! It will form a kind of sludge that could gum up the entire works.

Any chance of binding a lock doing this?
@HelpfulLockPicker6 жыл бұрын
It is no different from taking with a Bogota style rake you still typically don't want to pick locks in use or ones that you depend on raking is rougher on the springs.

A funny coincidence not 2 hours ago I picked my master number 40 and a very tough schlage lever latch with my half diamond when nothing else not even the sc1 bump key. This was the first time I had picked either lock.
@HelpfulLockPicker3 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the open!
@samlott995 жыл бұрын
So exactly which pick IS your first choice? If you knew you were going to be sent to open 5 locks, say a Master Padlock, an Abus Padlock, 2 Kwikset deadbolts, and 1 Schlage deadbolt, BUT you could ONLY take with you ONE pick, which would it be?
@HelpfulLockPicker5 жыл бұрын
I would use my Peterson Hook 1 reach in 0.025" for those locks but my most versatile pick is my Peterson Gem in 0.018"

Don'z Lockz They are great for SPP, Raking, and Dimple Locks in a pinch. They don't get much love from what I've seen :( I agree with you, they are definitely very versatile and could be great for the casual enthusiast.
@jamesthe-doctor89815 жыл бұрын
I tried scrubbing my acrylic lock with my smaller half diamond pick but got nowhere after 5 or 6 attacks. Switching to the larger one scrubbed it open on the first try.
@HelpfulLockPicker5 жыл бұрын
Sometimes you just need to keep trying out your tools until it works. Thanks for sharing!
@jamesthe-doctor89815 жыл бұрын
I can see it's like virtually everything I've ever learned how to do that requires a tool, or tools: you have to figure out what works best for YOU. Sometimes the best tool or technique that is the industry standard just isn't the best for everyone. Just try them all.

Dirk Stabins thank you for the kind words. I am glad it helps. I think the half Diamond makes a great combo tool even though I don't use it too much. This is kind of an old-school approach

Something I'll point out - in my personal experience - half diamonds have good uses, but a Hollow Half Diamond (some call it a Peaknuckle) is even better.
@HelpfulLockPicker5 жыл бұрын
I agree that can be very versatile and definitely underutilized. I hardly ever use them myself do you have a picture of the peaknuckle
