If anyone is thinking of getting a dog while being mentally ill, PLEASE don’t get one unless you are 100% sure that you are going to get up almost every day to feed, play, walk, exercise and take care of the dog, and if you are, get a dog that fits into your lifestyle so you and the dog don’t suffer! Don’t get a dog and then completely ignore its needs.

I’m clearly not okay right now, I can’t even take care of myself, how would I be able to take care of another, living breathing being? As someone with depression it's unfortunate but some cases do look this bad. It doesn't excuse her actions of clear cruelty and neglect but it definitely might explain why she did what she did. She should've called the police the second she wasn't taking care of her pets though, I could never imagine putting my animals through that even if I am depressed myself.

As soon as I saw the husky in the footage I immediately reached over to one of my huskies and started to pet her. There are people who do not deserve dogs and although I feel bad for her situation and crisis, this woman should not be allowed to care for or have dogs. Yes having a pet to care for can help those suffering from depression but there should almost always be other professional help they are receiving.

I’ve actually volunteered at Best Friend’s sanctuary in Utah and it’s a phenomenal place. I’d recommend anyone in the area or even anyone thinking to adopt to visit. Best Friends is the biggest no-kill shelter in the US and they have all types of animals and even more with disabilities. They don’t get that many donations, so if you ever want to support a trusted sanctuary, Best Friends is the place. Rescue, don’t buy. There’s plenty of animals who deserve love and I promise they have a lot to give

It also depends on your mental health issues specifically and the needs of the type of animal you're considering getting a cat or maybe even a fish are a lot more low maintenance than a dog not to mention 19 of them I have major depressive disorder and I have a cat but I still take care of him although if I do forget to check his water I live with my dad so he checks in too just in case I'll also say as a suicidal person people with severe depression and suicidal tendencies should not live on their own if they can help it

one of the reasons why the sentences for animal related things is so small is because animals are still classified as "personal property", and so the sentences are all pretty much akin to vandalism charges. like it IS called animal abuse in name, yes, but the animals themselves are still classified as property instead of, yknow, living things. there's huge pushes to reform those laws because a lot of them are just insanely outdated and ridiculous

60 days???? man, laws against animal cruelty and jail time needs to be much stricter, these people can SO EASILY harm animals again because animals literally can’t tell anyone what’s happening to them and they don’t often get help unless someone knows what they’re doing, this lady said she has a problem and that is who she is, she needs to be sent to a mental hospital or smth, she will do this again, the only reason she called the cops was because the owner of that one dog was gonna come, she just wanted to act moral and do the right thing but she knows she won’t get a long time in jail for this. Same. My dog was apparently brought into the rescue we got her at by the police, and that's all they knew about her which seemed very worrying to me. But as time went on, I was getting more and more convinced someone in the past hurt her. She hates feet, like to an insane degree, she will attack certain people's feet if they are just walking, she isn't the biggest fan of men, my mom and I are the ones she gravitates to the most for love and protection. That really just screamed to me that someone mistreated her.
