I've owned both, a '95 993 and ("upgraded" in '11) to a 997.2 Turbo S. Kept both for a while but eventually let the 993 go. The cars are two different animals and really can't be compared. I appreciate the comfort and amenities of the Turbo S but miss the visceral feel of the air-cooled manual. the 4wd Turbo is a no-brainer to drive while the 993 takes some "attention" to its eccentricities. The lines and look of the 993 will never be exceeded. The new 911's are too big!

Thank you for watching Mary! It's my favourite mod on the 993. When people ask me what they should do as their first 993 mod -- I always suggest the Golden Rod. The original rubber joint on the shift linkage to the transmission is so so sloppy, very un-Porsche...lol.

Like you I also swapped the original 993 steering wheel for a later 3 spoke design, as well as installing the 993RS gear boot. Both improve the look of the interior of the car, especially as my car is black on black.

@@911Percent to someone on a limited budget....... Why should they buy a 911 if they could buy a nissan 350z for 20k cheaper? Now this isnt dusguised critique this is a genuine question. I currently have a 350 and thinking about a 911 as my next car. Could also get an M5 ,M3 or RS5 or TTRS. Possibly EVO. I could afford a 911 997 4S but it would eat a chunk of my budget and major repairs would take me right to the limit but if I just put a turbo or charger in my 350 it will go over 400 bhp and be quicker than the 911 and i do like the 350. I also own a 993. I concur with all your positive comments. My one slight issue is with your comment about being cautious about the rear weight bias more than you would in a newer 911. I drive a 991 GT3 Cup car on track, and have owned 15 or so street 911’s over the years. I’ve gotta say the 993 is as planted in the turns as any modern 911 I’ve owned. Maybe not quite as planted as my 981 Spyder. 😉. My 993 suspension is ROW, BTW.

Liked your review. It confirmed my thinking. I owned a '73 911S Targa back in the late 70's and thought the modern 993 version of the air-cooled 911 would maintain much of the raw driver's feel and interior noise of the earlier 911. After looking at 996/997's for a couple of years, I went with a 2011 Carrera GTS 6-speed. I've had dedicated race cars before and knew going into it that this would be a daily driver and for fun cruises with the wife. It had to be something comfortable that you could drive in for several hours. I've been using it as a daily driver for over 4 years now and have put over 50k miles on it. No garage queen for me. :) It has factory sport exhaust and Sharkwerks center bypass. Sounds pretty good and girgles a bit on decel.

Hi Jacob , loved this video, I have the 997.2 4S ... I agree with all you say. I needed more rawness, so I began tinkering , I put in both PSE and a Sharkwerks bypass pipe ( now sounds right), IPD plenum ( smoother fuel delivery and power response ), More solid engine mounts (RSS) and also transmission mounts for manual transmission (ECS F1, they make the car more rigid and turns in amazingly, it connects the driver) , Eibach springs ( lowers by about 10-15mm), along with the engine mounts make it sit and drive better, wheel spacers also, EVOMSsit tuning ( throttle response and feel is great, and much better power curve), better flowing air filter ( by AWE tuning, makes it breaths far better). It is now a much more raw experience , there is so much you can do to the 997.2 , and the changes are quite easily to make it into your own level of rawness, the car then becomes unique for you and will be a true keeper. The beauty is Porsche refined the 997.2 generation for the market and regulations, but you can make it raw with some easy tweaks. Your 993 is something else, loved this.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for tuning in! That's quite the list! Love it! I agree with you, a few mods can make these cars far more raw than they are out of the box. I'm always thinking about a Sharkewerks bypass and Fister cans, but that's as far as I'll go I think with the 997 :) Thanks again for watching! Take care!

I am one of the rare people who can either backup (or refute) what is being said in this video because guess what, I too own a 1997 993 C2 (have own it since 2009) and ... LOL ... I also own a 2010 997.2 C2S (I have only owned it a little over a month now). Now the biggest difference between us is that my two 911s are both rear wheel drive cars while his two 911s are both all wheel drive. Oh and my daily driver is a Jeep Wrangler, not the 997. I am not planning on winter driving either of my 911s mainly because I am paranoid of being rear ended in snowy and icy conditions, plus my modified Wrangler is the bomb on snow and ice, especially deep snow. With all that said, I am in agreement with Jacob. My 993 is more engaging to drive than the 997. But without a doubt the 997 is faster and it turns better than the 993. But what makes the 993 more engaging than the 997 even when the 997 performs better? Part of it, is what Jacob says in his video. The 993 is air cooled and you have to experience an air cooled 911 to know why we like them. My 993 is also a 6 speed manual transmission (though it is rare for me to ever use 6th gear) and my 997 is also PDK (though I am still waiting for the paddle shifter wheel to arrive). But another reason why my 993 is more engaging than my 997 is because years ago I installed a FabSpeed performance exhaust on the 993 while the 997 still only has the stock exhaust and at low RPMs the sound of the 997 is rather boring and thus not as engaging to drive. I do plan on changing the exhaust, but not yet. So as far as engine sounds are concerned, it's not a fair apples to apples comparison. But the 993 is still more engaging because it has a more raw feel to everything about it. The 997 as awesome a performer it is, just lacks the raw feeling. Now I am not sure how many of us are out there? People who own both the 993 and the 997.2 at the same time and it is funny that there are at least two of us. I am sure we both bought the 997s for different reasons. Jacob plans on daily driving his while mine was picked up mainly to track at local DE open lapping track days. But yes Jacob's review is very much in line with my experiences with my own 993 and my 997. So I endorse this video. LOL

Thanks so much for taking the time to write your comment swoopnhuck! And amazing to hear that you are in a parallel (2wd) Porsche universe to mine!! :) Both cars are so amazing and the perfect 911 sweet spot I think. Anything older would be too raw and newer too soft for me (unless GT3..:P) I can't wait to strap the snowboard on the roof and head to the hills in the 997 this year. Cheers! Enjoy the cars! :)

@@911Percent You say that older than 993 is too raw but a 964 is just a bit older but basically the same car as the 993 with small modifications in the engine and suspension. I respect that you like the 993 but for me the 964 is the last real 911, with its original headlights. To me the 964 is still the classic Porsche with a small touch of technology (ECU, ABS and airbags) that makes it the perfect mix. Don't get me wrong, I like the 993 also, but personally I prefer the 964.
@picardmadeoff10686 жыл бұрын
Ok, swoopnhuck, I've owned various 911's over the last 3 decades including a 993 and a 73.5 Targa but now that I'm older I prefer the comforts of the 997. My daily driver is a 997.1 Carrera 4 and I'll bolt on the ski rack this week and put on the Pirelli Sottozero snows for the winter. 90k miles and not a single accident even with the nutty Texans who show up and drive our snow packed Colorado roads. So as cool as you jeep is, dump it, put some snow tires on a 997 Carrera 4 and drive the sh*t out of it year round including an occasional donut...they are great in the snow. My oldest's first car memory is of doing donuts in the old Targa, in the snow with the top off while sitting in his car seat. he reminded me of this when he returned from college this summer. Not a bad memory for a college kid!

Hi. How reliable are 911’s? Ive always wanted to have a 911, but can only afford a used one. What year should I look for? Hows the maintenance on these? Thanks.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Honestly, super loaded question that would be impossible to accurately answer in a KZbin comment. Shortest answer is YES, 911s are very robust and reliable cars. Short answer is ; depends on what generation of 911. Maintenance is again dependent on what 911, but from my experience with the 993 and now the 997 expect to pay a bit more than BMW or Mercedes maintenance as far as labour and parts. Also your consumables are more expensive; like brakes and most importantly tires. Check out rennlist.com or pelicanparts.com/forum and start reading about the generation you think you can buy and see what's up with it. There is a lot of in-depth info there. Take care and enjoy this exciting time buying a 911 :)
@bigmacdaddy12346 жыл бұрын
Not sure why you say it's "impossible to accurately answer in a KZbin comment". This is simply not true. The answer is to get a 1999 Porsche 911. Period. This is the best of of the old world and the new. It has just enough technology to keep you safe but not so much to break your bank account. It is easy to maintain and it's the most affordable of all the 911's. The 1999 doesn't even have any IMS issues as its a double row bearing. This has to be the easiest question of all to answer and you balked on it. Seriously.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
What about the IMS/RMS as well as the reported (and rampant) issue with cylinder bore scoring that leads to massive failures on M96 and even M97 engines? If you don't know what you're talking about why post wrong info for people? Yes, the 1999 is probably the cheapest 911 you can buy today, but you'll pay for it in maintenance and repairs in no time. OP asked a very open ended question. As I stated the 911 has been around for over half a century, all generations had their issues. Can't talk about them in one single youtube comment. Seriously.

I bought my 1999 Carerra 2 ( with almost no options except memory driver seat) 2 years ago as 3rd owner with about 85k on odometer. Both prior owners, MDs, had full maintenance records and PPI by P dealer said cleanest they’d ever seen. Nevertheless, I’ve now spent $8k on an $12k purchase as regular matter of old parts that wore out and pro-active IMS replace ($1,500 incl part). Entire front suspension $3k, seat leather replacement $1k, interior plastic bits and speaker etc, $800, alternator, oil separator (discovered during IMS replace and it turned out it had been done before but with non LN Engineering part). The driving experience in the mountains is fabulous, daily drives in city amusing, and back seat fine for kids. By comparison, my 5 yr ownership of a 2000 Boxster was only $600/yr but I bought the car with only 30k odometer and it was considerably newer at time of purchase. Porsches can be maintained a long time due to owner willingness and parts availability but no where in the same league as Toyota/Lexus reliability and build quality.
@bigmacdaddy12346 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you are falling for the internet hysteria. The possibility of an IMS/RMS failure with a 19 Year old 1999 911 is 0%. There are also no 'massive' failures either with those engines of that year and any car that did fail did so a long time ago. What you have left today are the good cars ready to be bought and driven. And there are many of them. As for maintenance and repairs, show me one car in the world that does not need maintenance and repairs! So that is not a valid point to make. Furthermore, nothing is easier than a 1999 911 to repair and get parts for. Bottom line: the 1999 Porsche 911 is the best used 911 a person could buy for the money and this is what you should be telling people when they ask "which one is the most affordable".

Thanks for your time & effort in presenting the comparison. I would appreciate your opinions on which will be a better choice as a fun weekend ride between a 718(S) Cayman vs 997.2, for a mid 50 professional bloke, whos currently drive Golf6 GTI daily. Thank you.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Thank so much for watching Yee Chiang Lee. My only experience driving a 718 S Cayman was on a track during a Driver Development day. They are amazing handling cars, very nimble, very small, very fun. I enjoyed both the Cayman and the Boxster. But I have no true, practical experience with day/to/day driving or B road hooning in them… Sam, from SeenThroughGlass YT channel, has one as his daily drive in London and he seems to really like it.. That turbo 4 cylinder, with sports exhaust sounds fantastic…especially on over runs when it crackles and pops. Good fun. Also, with the new Porsche, you’ll have warranty. The 997.2 is an icon, and it does everything a sports car does really well, but it is getting up in age, so you’ll need to pamper it more I think. And, you’ll feel the 6-9 year difference between the two cars in build quality and a tech standpoint… (For example the ease of Apple CarPlay vs. the realization that your 997.2 PCM Bluetooth module won’t stream your music to the stereo, but it has a CD player…lmao…My advice is to drive both and see what feels right to you. You will not be disappointed in either choice from a “fun factor” perspective, I guarantee that..it’s a WIN / WIN ! :) Exciting times, good luck!

I do not disagree! I talk about this in one of my previous videos about the 5 things I hate about the 993 - one of those things is the stupid speculator values. It's changed everything and I agree, makes them a tough sell when looking at magazine stats vs the newer cars. Since you already have a 991 a 997 would be a great addition to the stable as the fun, raw car. Unless of course you're looking for a massive contrast to your 991, then 993 all the way. Take care! Wow just found your channel, huge Porsche fan. Looking at getting a 997 next year. Didn’t consider the 993 until now, could you comment on why you choose both in 4 wheel drive? Also what would the price be of a clean 993 avg price?

Amazing that you have owned one from the beginning! Yes, I got the two Secondary Air Injection system warnings five years ago and had the ports cleaned out then. The light hasn't come back, however it's just a matter of time that the carbon deposits build up again. I also swap out the SAI Check Valve every 10K km or 3 years, I'm due for one again next spring. Fingers crossed it holds out - I think a top-end job is unfortunately looming in the future. Thanks for watching!

@@911Percent I had the 410CElLwhen the car was 4 years old and never went away but there is a known trick and I always pass the emissions with flying colours. Just had the lower engine original gasket replaced and some other minor stuff 2.3K, I do some minor maintenance like changing the brake pads and stuff, I put the PSS9 kit for about 6K USD ... If u have time take a quick peek I found the old video when I picked it up in Stuttgart and at the end how it looks now(pardon the spanglish) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpSoaJaFf6yKfa8 Cheers

Great video. Sharkwerks bypass makes such a great difference, you won’t be disappointed and it’s very reasonably priced. I’m not too familiar with the exhaust system you mentioned but I’ll have to look into it. I still maintain that you should get some eibach lowering springs and spacers. I’ve been daily driving a B7 RS4 and I don’t find the PDK boring at all especially in sport plus, shifts are very quick. I was slightly concerned that after driving a manual car I’d be bored with my GTS. I still think that those who deride the PDK transmission haven’t really driven it. Just my opinion.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching! Glad to hear that you'r enjoying your PDK! Oh man, I would love to experience what it's like with the extra GTS ponies! It must be a riot in SportPlus. Sharkwerks teamed up with FD Motorsports who created the Fister exhaust and sell an Xpipe and muffler combo for the 997.2. I have the Fister system on the 993 and absolutely love it. I agree with you about the PDK hate out there - most haven't driven one and are just bandwagoning the whole "save the manuals" bs..lol The transmission fantastic.

Thanks for tuning in Klaus. The only way you can see if it will work is by getting in and trying it out. Getting in and out of the car might be a bit of a problem, but 911 Nuts come in all shapes and sizes :)...so give the 911 a seat to see if it will work. Exciting time for you! Good luck!

At 1:41 - you say that you are trying to be as 'subjective' as possible... :) The 993 is already a very evolved platform with modern suspension and modern transmission. For a truer 911 feel you need to go back to a G Series '86 or older.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I meant to say objective...derp.. late night editing and I didn't catch that.... I know what you are saying about the 993. I think the point was that every generation moving forward is loosing more and more of the magic. I was just comparing my two 911s..I wish I owned a G series too haha. I drove one last year briefly and I totally know what you mean. Thank you for tuning in. Cheers.
@PoggiiBonsii6 жыл бұрын
a truer' 911 feel is also pretty subjective....
@sportscarnut6 жыл бұрын
@ PoggiiBonsii - Truer in the sense that up to 1986 all cars had the same torsion bar suspension, unassisted steering, 915 transmission, and cable-operated clutch. Nothing subjective about that. :) The OP understood that. And of course a 993 is a great car and the last luftgekühlt.
@bionictulip6 жыл бұрын
Great comparison. Audio: you're recording way too hot and have tons of distortion. Be sure your recording level is set at no higher than -6 dB, and use normalization and compression. If you're not sure how to do that, search KZbin for audacity voice over techniques (or Audition, if you have Adobe CC).
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that! I know, audio is my biggest challenge right now. I'll do some more research! Cheers!

What a perfect compromise: the 997 is better for big city commuting and daily driving. Nobody should use the 993 ideally as a daily, as it is a collectors car. My opinion.

Man, I really am in love with the 997.2 and will hopefully own one one day. But from the comparison, it seems it’s a little numb. I had a e46 M3 and I loved the way it drove. I’m starting to wonder if an older 911 is what I should be considering. Can anyone comment on their experience with an e46 M3 compared to any 911s? Either way, Jakob, thanks for giving the people what they want. And for giving me something more to think about. Looks like a pretty awesome automotive therapy route you got there. Love the content as always!
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
Hey K1d Phresh! Thanks for watching man. In comparison to the 993 the 997 is "softer" but it is the last modern day raw 911 I think. If you compared the 997 to a 991 there is a huge difference in feel. Huge. The power and sharpness of the newer cars is pretty intoxicating so it's a toss up. The only way you'll know what's important is if you drive them and see for yourself. I have very limited seat time in an E46 and in an e92 M3 (both manuals) but I remember the difference in feel. The e92 was way less raw in feel, but the v8 sound, the balance, the boost in power was quite memorable. I think it's just evolution. Don't eliminate the newer 911s yet, they're incredible fun, it just depends on what you will enjoy the most. Go drive them to see. Cheers man!
@K1dPhresh16 жыл бұрын
911Percent definitely will have to drive them to see. I loved the rawness of the e46, but I can imagine the e92’s V8 would be awesome too. I still own my 03 Cobra and “raw and visceral” are often heard when one is reviewed. Just something to think about. It’s sad that sports cars are becoming so “soft” and insulated.
@Bmwguy20115 жыл бұрын
Great question. I’ve wondered the same. But you’d agree: an old e46 with 150000 miles is a cheap commodity still compared to these. So one should necessarily buy both as the utility of the BMW can’t be compared against 911s and all are going up in value.
@bofat656 жыл бұрын
No question. 993. Buy the best you can afford, drive it hard, and watch it appreciate >10% a year with a smile on your face. I rather drive a slower car fast, than a faster car slow. Easy choice imho. )
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
I agree, if I could only have one of them, the 993 is the one that would stay. But not because of the value, it really is a great driver's car and brings me so much joy. Driving a slower car fast is the best! Thanks for tuning in! Happy New Year! :)

Great video!! The 997 is an amazing daily and fun car to drive. The engine response is a huge positive. The negatives is the car is sort of numb compared to the 993. This makes you have to really push it to get a rush. Sound is not great and never will be inside. Outside it sounds decent with upgrades. Still quiet inside. Dont waste your money. I had x51 cf intake, awe headers, upgraded exhaust, and x pipe with 200 cats. Still was disappointed. Trust me nothing makes it sound good like the 993. FD exhaust rest stock in 993 is marvelous. Glad your enjoying your 997. Like most 911's they are great sports cars that can be used daily. The 997 was the last model that isnt a GT cruiser IMHO. The 991 to me became too refined and large. Looks wise the 991 is beautiful, but doesnt do it for me driving wise. The ugly duck 996 is similar that it is better driving wise than the 997. More raw = better experience for me. Sad to say that each model the 911 gets worse minus GTx models.
@Vincenzo9116 жыл бұрын
FTLAUD 911 I have a friends which has a racing exhaust from techart , paid 10500€ .... with air filters , mounting and reprog ... this is the non homologated exhaust (without cat) and the car sounds like a beast ! hopefully there is the switch for close the valves.

I disagree. If I wanted a highly analog, low-power car then I would just get an older 911. I wanted a high-powered, high-grip car with good comfort, and so I bought a 911 Turbo S. Not everyone wants exactly the same car - or we want more than one car, like Jakob. I daily drive my car and have also been on track with it a dozen times in 14 months of ownership.

Great video but please don't confuse others by referring to the the 993 as having a "raw feel", the 993 is a highway cruiser compared to a 1972 911S. I've been lucky enough to own all the generations as my only car, daily drivers. Yes, I'm old.
@911Percent6 жыл бұрын
CJ, thanks for the comment and for watching! I agree about the 993 feeling very "GT" to generations before it, especially cars from the 70s. My intent wasn't to say it is the only 911 with raw feel. My point was that each generation looses some rawness, and in this comparison to my 997, the 993 is pretty raw - 14 years is a big evolutionary gap. Also I wanted to touch on how the 997 feels so much more sportscar and raw compared to the current 991s. It's amazing to me the difference between those gens and how Porsche sharpened its pencil at the cost of rawness. Thanks again for watching!

Yes, I bet they are! LOL... I compared my two 911s... a 993 C4S and 997.2 C4S. This video wasn't' about what's the most raw in the entire 911 history lmao.
@-Grifter Жыл бұрын
Most people worked that out, it was obvious when you said compared to my 997 the 993 is much more raw. For the commenter to add the word confused is trying to treat you like someone who knows nothing about 911s. For your age you probably know plenty with what you have. There’s only one person confused here. Great vids. I’m enjoying my new to me 997.2 C2S PDK. I’d love a 993 but prices are just silly now in 2023.

Realistically, the only debate between them has to be about style, because the 997 is better in every possible way than the 993-power, handling, reliability, comfort, convenience, technology, etc.
