Im 37, and I cant express to you how massive the ps2 was for kids my age. Firstly, elephant in the room, have to talk about the dvd player. You couldnt walk into a 16-24 year olds house in the early 2000s and not see a dvd collection. That was the beginning of the true movie collection, as dvd's were sold everywhere and surprisingly easy to get. The idea of the dvd was just as groundbreaking as the cd, with not only the ability to quickly skip ahead chapter to chapter, but the quality of the video (at the time of course). Also, the big question why dvd's were so popular was two fold, the fact that you have the quality and availability, but more importantly, a chance to start your own collection, away from your parents or older siblings vhs collection. It was a brand new, fresh start, that was YOURS. And of course the ps2 itself was in fact a true "entertainment system", having the ability to play games in good video quality, play cd's, and dvd's, among other things. There were attachments and add ons for everything you needed. Lastly, it was the last non-live service games console. A throwback to games that were released as is, no do overs. What you get is what you got and the game publishers couldnt just throw out a piece of junk and give the live service excuse to keep you playing. It was indeed a much simpler time. Good Times!!

The PS2 shines brighter today than when it was released. After 35 years of buying the newest consoles and games from the Atari 2600 to the XB1, I’ve abandoned new consoles and have gone back to the PS2. Internet dependence, DLC, micro transactions, mandatory installs, updates, demand for massive hard drives and games that are actually getting worse outside of graphics have turned me off the next generation from now on. The PS2 has a massive library, most of which I’ve never played. Others, I’m happy to play again. Then the obvious fact that it plays PS1 games only makes it more attractive. Simplicity is king. Pop in the disc and it’s instantly ready to go. Multiplayer is also the person holding the controller next to me on the couch as it should be. Every genre in gaming is well represented, the games are affordable and physical media is still the best. The PS2 is truly the one console to rule them all.

Sony's strongpoint has always been its ability to retain value after being sunsetted or replaced. As you mentioned, the PS1 was a viable CD player long into the PS2 era. The PS2 was a viable DVD player, long into the PS3 era. The PS3 was and still is a viable blu ray player, 14 years after launch. Part of this is sony's shrewd strategy of coinciding console launches with format launches (They were partly responsible for developing the CD, DVD and Blu Ray standards so they were able to launch consoles in line with new formats). The other part is stable software and long term support. I was an xbox and xbox 360 fan but Sony won me over with the PS3 when I saw how online play was included in the price of the console, instead of Microsoft's As-A-Service model of Xbox Live reload cards, as well as the fact that the PS3 had NUMEROUS game changing features built in that the Xbox 360 lacked (Wifi, rechargable controller, Blu Ray, proper thermal management, user replaceable storage, etc).

I ended up replacing it with the Xbox 360 in what, 2010 probably. Late but I remember when I was younger my grandma had a PS2 as a DVD player. Whenever we visited, all we knew was that it was a DVD player with a remote that looked like a PS3 controller. As we got older, we quickly realized it was a PS2 and my grandma never knew she owned a game console. We bought one game for it before she gave it away. Wish we had kept it looking back.

Bro, the Tekken Tag Tournament disrespect... It’s my favorite Tekken game. SSX was also great for a launch game.

The first Tekken Tag Tournament was the main reason why I got a PS2.

I was always tempted to peek at the save files cause I wanted to see the little characters. Everyone obviously freaked out when they saw me messing around there.

I had one of the early ps3 models that was fully backwards compatible to the ps2. Therefore it was possible to play ps2 games in HD. It also had a multiple card reader integrated. They just removed those features later on.

Jak 3 was my favourite game on the PS2. I had so many hours of fun just battling the metal heads and robots in that industrial-type area in Haven City. Ultimate Spiderman would be my second favourite game. Very underrated and under appreciated nowadays. One of the best open world spiderman games

Thanks for the memories! Me and my brothers also grew up with PS2 like you. Favourite game would most definitely be Def Jam: Fight for NY. Have a look, I'm not even afraid to say that it's possibly the best fighting game for its time. It was so ahead of its time. Story mode was just unbelievable with the ability to unlock new fighters, achievements (trophy room) which was unusual for that time. All the real rappers in the game like Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, Xzibit, Ludacris, Ice T, Method Man and Red Man, etc. All the different fighting styles that you can mix, so many amazing blazin' (special combo) moves. Ability to upgrade your fighter in the gym. Also the way you could customize your created fighter (tattoos, real brand clothing, haircuts, Jacobs&Co jewellery, etc) just pure brilliance. And most importantly you could play free for all (up to 4 players) with your friends. When it comes to graphics it still looks relatively good even after all these years. Looks decent on my 4K TV connected with component cables. And this game is pretty much the only reason I will never sell my PS2.

My most favorite or the one I am most interested to find was Shadow of the Colossus. I did play it as a kid, but it was the day before my PS2 was "broken" (I discovered THAT fact after my dad sold to someone else) and accidentally sold my full working PS2 with my most of my library (Still got 2 game discs and 2 game boxes). Got a New PS2 8 years later in High-school from a classmate that didn't have the cables to play it with (got it due to me owning a PS1 with the same cables as a PS2). Got A LOT of game with it and it was in perfect condition with a 2 controller and 2 mem cards. IT WAS AMAZING playing PS2 games again!

You are very young. I was 8 when the PS2 came out and got one in '04 when the slim was released. Favorite console of all time right up there with PS4 in second. PS2 is single handedly the best console that ever was - and I don't believe anything can ever come close to its legacy. I still buy games for it to this very day!

Got my first PS2 in military training just after basic training (AIT) and I think the biggest selling point for the PS2 was the backwards compatibility. If they did this for the 5 it would become the next best selling console, currently I see the switch moving towards that position, because of the standalone playability that don't require online support.

As someone who was a teenager in the PS2 era, I would content that videogames were a firm part of pop culture by this time thanks to the original PS and clever marketing by Sony thanks to the influence of Sony Music and to a lesser extent Sony Pictures. The positioning of the original PS, and by maintaining that momentum and familiarity surely guaranteed the PS2's success.

Man. I started my online gaming with socom us navy seals. That game came with a headset, and you would give commands to your ai teammates with it, vocally. That game and counterstrike 1.3 on pc. It's cool seeing everything grow up, the directions things have taken, what's survived and who's praised.

This is the moment I stopped playing new computer games - I started secondary school in 2000, I've got huge memories of the SNES and N64 and a couple of times playing the Gamecube or Xbox at relative's houses, but I haven't played any consoles since the original Wii in about 2007. I still think of the PS2 as being a new thing...

So I have to admit, the PS2 wasn't my console of choice during that era - the GameCube was. I was born in 88, and my first console was the SNES, so I've always been a Nintendo person through and through. That being said, my sister owned the PS2 in our family, and I quite frequently bought and played games on it too. Some of my favourites are MGS2 and 3, and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. While I definitely had Xbox lust during that generation (I've always been a huge sci fi nerd and Halo just screamed out to me), the PS2 became my defacto second choice console after the GameCube, and I'm still SUPER nostalgic for many of its titles. I mean...I did end up buying every subsequent Playstation console, didn't I? :P Great video and awesome channel! :)
