Spent a few months there on airfield damage repair exercise with 51 Field Squadron, R.E. in the late seventies. Loved the Asbach, steaks cooked to order and the sauna in the gym. They has Lightning’s but flew Harriers. I think the Lightning’s were there to fool Russian surveillance into thinking they were operational.

1968 is about right because having been scrambled they used to turn the after burners on directly over the flats we used to live in (Gutersloh Blankenhagen) !!

My first ever sighting of these was as our plane flew towards Gutersloh on my first trip to Germany, they escorted our plane in. At least I think that’s what they did because one flew either side as we came in.

This must have been after 19(F) Squadron disbanded & gave 92 all their a/c as i never in all my time from 70-73 saw that many serviceable a/c on 92's line they were lucky if they had 9 out ha ha.

pof1991 Gotta be pre 1974. I arrived (transiting through) in Gutersloh in December 74 and they had Phantoms on the apron.

According to the RAF they moved to Guttersloh in 1968

@@3204clivesinclair 92 Sqn were at Gutersloh with the Lightning from 1968 until it was replaced with the Phantom FGR.2 in 1977; moving over to Wildenrath at the same time. I reckon those Phantoms you saw in 1974 were just visiting as they were still in the attack/recce role in Germany at the time prior to the arrival of the Jaguar.

Sometime after 1973, I lived there and somewhere in that video is my Dad 😁. We moved there in 73 and out again in 76....

@@3204clivesinclair I was there 76/77 with GR3 Harriers, (we had just moved up from Wildenrath), pretty sure John (the cameraman) was there just before that. Most Lightnings had gone in my time but I did witness one two seater run out of fuel , 2 ejections and crashed in field near the airfield. All survived.
