I remember a short story I read as a kid Aliens broke their own laws against first contact to warn humans of an escaped outlawed bioweapon. This weapon was so terrible that it was an extinction level event when ever it made landfall. Maybe if humans mobilize their entire military earth could survive long enough for the aliens to arrive to deal with this horrific creature before it spawned This most feared bioweapon landed on earth and was killed by a house cat shortly after.

There's also the one from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe. Arthur Dent said "I seem to be having this tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle", his voice passed through a freak wormhole and was heard by two civilizations in another dimension, the G'Gugvuntts and the VI'Hurgs. To them, in their language, it was the worst insult imaginable... they gathered their fleet and set sail for Earth... However, due to a terrible miscalculation of scale, their entire fleet was eaten by a small dog.

First story reminds me of my own personal pet theory ( well I say mine, sure others have had the same thought ) that the reason humanity hasn't been contacted by other, more advanced races yet is because WE are the first advanced race. For whatever reason, as old as the universe is ( bit under 14 billion years old last estimate I poked at ) it's taken that long for conditions to settle for just life to arise, let alone intelligent life. We just got here first and we can't get in touch with anyone else cause we're at the head of the race already. How's that for some HFY? That second story, those feels. Dogs have been with us since well before recorded history, why wouldn't we keep them by our side as we stride forward? Loved it.
@noppornwongrassamee89412 жыл бұрын
We being the first high tech race, maybe even first sapient race, may not be as unlikely as it first appears. 1) Saw a video on the age of the universe. Yes, the universe is 13.5 billion years old, but in terms of the expected lifespan of the universe, the universe as a whole is still in its infantile stage. It you map the universe's lifespan to a single year, then RIGHT NOW is still in the first 12 minutes of that year. 2) Life has been on Earth for 4 billion years. But the first 3 billion was all single celled life and multi-cellular life only appeared 1 billion years ago. Why did that take so long? No one knows, but it sounds like just transitioning to multicellular life is a very low order probability and for all we know, we got lucky on it being early. 3) Even after multicellular life appeared, there were several extinction events before humans appeared and no evidence of earlier tool using species. Dinosaurs lived millions of years before us and showed signs of social behavior, yet didn't build any high tech civilizations. Put that all together, and it sure looks like high tech species like us is an extreme low order probability, maybe low enough that we're the only ones in the visible universe so far.
@GuukanKitsune2 жыл бұрын
I always assumed that, because the fastest signals possible STILL can't go faster than light, any alien civilization looking at us, and us them, are actually seeing the planet as it was thousands of years ago. Aliens could be a thousand years ahead of us, but with their planet 18000 ly away we are seeing their world as it was during their caveman days, and from their end likewise. There would be no trace of our mutual existances to observe because we are literally looking into the past. With this being the case, the only way an alien race could become aware of us, and us them, would be if we directly stumbled across each other, and even just the GALAXY being as large as it is the odds of that are ludicrously against. We will assuredly actually meet the residents of a planet long before we're able to detect, from Earth, any signs they exist. Additionally, the further out the spiral arms of the galaxy, the older the stars and planets. Galaxies didn't just pop into existance all in one go. The oldest stars are around the edges and still travelling outwards, while the newest stars are towards the center. Any stars with life-bearing worlds roughly the same distance from the galactic center as Sol probably have existed just as long and developed as long. So us being the only advanced race is at best, nigh-impossible. And any stars with life-bearing worlds closer to the EDGE have been around LONGER, and are likely much more advanced than us. Out on the galactic edge is probably where the crumbling remains of alien supercivilizations are liable to be.

The second story reminds me a slightly similar story. Told from the perspective of a regular dog who narrates how humans seemed eternally young and undying, how in the lifetime of a dog a human barely changed. But his human was old, he gave away his children to his own children for them to live with but he himself would no longer take up another puppy. The dog swore to live out of his remaining years with the human, perhaps witnessing the end of an ancient being like him.

I remember a story about the last human. It starts off with someone in a desperate search for someone else. Soon it becomes clear that our hero is a dog with human level IQ. He operates a flying craft designed by humans for dogs. Everything he uses is made by humans. That's the problem. We uplifted dogs but didn't change their form. Wasn't really an issue. Until the humans did human things and killed themselves off. Now the dogs had human level smarts but no hands. Everything they knew would slowly decay as they could do nothing but watch and return to a mindless state. Our hero lucks out however. He finds a man. The last human. He's old however, and sickly. The dog does what he can but knows both the human and canines are doomed. On top of all that the old man demands they fly to some jungle in Africa. The dog complies with the strange demand because that's what canines do. They obey, they love. After days of just sitting in a miserable and wet jungle a Gorilla appears out of the bush. The dog growls and moves to protect the last human with his dog mounted laser gun. The old man moves between them. The gorilla simply asks, "Has man returned?"

We have a bond with dogs that any human can still feel in its totality today, all you need to do is go on vacation in canada with a dog and no one else, and get snowed in in the lodge. The bond that grows then is the same bond that our ancestors made with the lone wolves. The bond of survival and love, the bond of a pack, and the bond of a lifelong friend. Can your cat say the same?

For this story though - Humans also has stories and legends of Devourers. Creatures that ate humans. Every intelligent species probably had predators at one time that they now tell stories of. Though why humans would leave the Earth and then other creatures follow as they grew to sentience is interesting. The second story - Humans former pets, in this case dogs attaining sentience but still having love for humans. One wonders if cats having also attained sentience, may have legends of creatures like humans that once they lived with and loved, as well as being loved by.

I'm new to this channel so not sure if you did it already but there's a short story out there not from reddit. So humans poke around their area of the galaxy to find that every sentient species is extinct, or primitive and violent they then decide to make a giant ship to go and colonize parts unknown, well immediately upon meeting a new species they end up in front of their defense line, that new species takes them as a threat. Due in part to their ship being so large and bit threatening in design. Didn't help that their communication equipment weren't exactly compatible so any transmission came off as distorted and menacing. The human ship retreats not having defense weapons but accidentally collides with and destroys one of the alien ships. After a few more encounters they finally properly communicate with aliens and the galactic community and discover that the entire galaxy considers their section of the galaxy a cursed area where any species that evolves there ends up being insane and incredibly violent due to an unknown phenomenon. Earth happens to be on the edge of this zone of influence. So that is why the aliens panicked among first contact, and why the humans aren't as violent as everyone thinks, also thanks to an evolutionary quirk un humanity. The humans however decide to play their part and use voice modulating masks and their negative reputation to their advantage to gain political leverage. The narrator (a human) upon realizing that humanity as a whole have been essentially been pulling a massive prank on the rest of the galaxy lends some thought that they as a species may actually be insane.

Man, in another story humans glassed an alien world when they messed with some of our alien buddies... Can you imagine... the holy hell and righteous vengeance that would unfold... if some upity space empire tried to mess with our canine friends? Can you imagine an entire race turning into John Wick?

Humans would systemically wipe out what harmed the dogs in as slow and horrible a way possible till what is left is forced to devolve into the new dogs of the uplifted dog species.

The first one was funny, though personally I say they make better cheese than meat. The second was just depressing.

The problem with this story is that humans did not engineer longer lifespans for dogs. There is no reason why with genetic engineering dogs could not live a lot longer.
