Someone said it before, but im commenting it too so it doesnt get lost, you got a collapsed lifter, probably caused by AFM/DOD. Its causing both the tapping you are hearing and the misfire. It shouldnt be too hard to fix, with plenty of resources online telling you how to do so. Seeing how great it looks otherwise, i would even consider doing the AFM/DOD delete.

@randywolbert54434 жыл бұрын
GM has very common issues with their V8 engines. Mainly the 5.3L engines with AFM (active fuel management). The AFM lifters tend to fail, and stick or collapse. Keeping good oil, and plenty of it in the engine, is KEY. These engines also have a bad oil consumption issue, which GM say is "in their specs". ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS REMOVE A VALVE COVER ON SUSPECT MISFIRE CYLINDER, AND WATCH FOR NO MOVEMENT ON THOSE ROCKER ARMS. There is a TSB leading to the passenger side valve cover clogging up in the breather area, as well as piston rings on either cyl#7 or cyl#8 sticking. Make sure you check your oil and change it frequently.

Randy, You have a collapsed variable hydraulic lifter. The intake and or head will need to be removed to access and replace the lifter.
@MeDicen_Rocha4 жыл бұрын
Yup, it sounds exactly like that. DoD is a bitch. But seeing how great the rest of it is, it could be worth it to both fix the lifter and do the DoD delete.

I believe the lifter is very long and will not clear the head for removal. Also use an OEM lifter not an after market replacement that is made in China. The Chinese metallurgy is too soft and will wearout premature. TRW - Seal Power has had many failures.

Noisy lifter won't hurt anything. Had a Buick Regal back in the 80's, bought with the same lifter tapping. Drove it for several years, no problems. Never got better, never got worse. Good car, lasted until our salt laden winter roads finally took their toll. Rear axle stablalizer let go, causing the rear end to lock up and damned near tore the axle right off the car. You guys are extremely fortunate you don't have to put up with rust on cars down there.

You need to do search for curb weight of vehicle. That’ll give you typical unladen weight. Gross weight is vehicle with max passengers and pay load. GMC envoy curb weight comes in at 4400 to 4800, depending on specs. With v8 and AWD you’re probably at the 4800 mark.
@tokuzumi14 жыл бұрын
Those 5.3Ls have the active fuel management (AFM). The lifters failing on a cylinder are common. It requires removing the intake manifold and the heads. Might have to replace the camshaft too. You could remove the valve cover on the driver's side, and watch the rocker arms to verify. If the aren't rockin' the lifters have failed.

5:00 As long as any of the idiot lights are on, there is something that needs to be addressed and repaired. If the idiot light is flashing, it is something serious. 7:25 That is so you can keep items out of sight, or direct sunlight. 10:45 That might be a simple misfire, or at the worst, a lifter tapping, stuck valve, bent push rod.. If that were a rod knock it would be A LOT louder, and you'd have blue smoke coming out the exhaust. 11:10 The idiot light is flashing.......don't drive the car until you figure out what the problem is. 16:15 While exhaust breaking is very good for the engine, brakes, and a few other components, several municipalities actually prohibit it in residential areas because of the noise level, especially at night. You will also see the occasional sign on the expressway prohibiting exhaust breaking, and that's because that particular stretch of expressway runs close to or even through a residential area. 17:10 Stop at Home Depot and pick up a cheap 6 inch level with a magnet on it, and use it to see if the tongue on your trailer is sitting level, or if it needs adjusting. 17:30 Does part of your "break in period" include an oil change?? Some engines run "break in" oil that needs to be changed out before normal use can begin. 29:50 No need for anyone to cringe.....that's one of the oldest tricks in the book to see if a cylinder is getting spark, although it is usually done with the spark plug in the wire, not just grounding the wire to an exhaust manifold. The wire could be good, but if the spark plug is damaged or just fouled out, it won't spark.

Great truck. Info you need: GMC Envoy: Flashing Check Engine Light Diagnosis. ... When your engine is misfiring, it is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust. This raw fuel can detonate, which causes damage to the catalytic converter and the exhaust system itself. There can be other situations that can cause the check engine light to blink as well but I’ll bet it’s a spark plug/coil pack situation.
@freddywells57854 жыл бұрын
Randy, I've had three GM 5.3's with a collapsed lifter. The absolute cheapest way out and feel confident in your repair is to try to "unstick" that collapsed lifter first. Remove the intake, take an old pushrod you have laying around out of a core motor, file it down a little bit so you can seat it over the collapsed lifter and hit that pushrod with a hammer. If it unsticks (two out of the three I tried this on did unstick for me) it will pop up and you wont have a loose rocker arm anymore. Now to keep it fixed, send your ECM off to have the DOD software deleted where it runs on all eight cylinders all the time because if you put it back together without the reprogram, the first time it goes into AFM mode, that same lifter will collapse again. I use a company in Louisiana for my ECM DOD delete work. Very fast and never had an issue. If it doesn't unstick, well its gonna need a DOD delete kit with new non DOD lifters, a non DOD camshaft and a replacement of that funky intake valley or VLOM I think is what they call it that controls the DOD along with a DOD delete reprogram on the ECM. The one I had to do was on an '07 Suburban with 75K and when I was done it cost me around $1,800 (parts and labor) to fix so you can see where it would be very important to try and unstick that lifter before going any further with the repair. I really hope you can unstick that lifter because that DOD delete kit is no fun. Good luck.

It is Sunday, 10th of May in Australia & Mothers' day so, from me, a Happy Mothers' Day to Jessica & your respective Mums. At 7.30 pm, you lowered the trailer back down, which is far easier than lowering it up. Lovl. In Australia, GVM is the total mass of the trailer & load & the GVM of the vehicle is the total weight of the vehicle with all liquids (e.g. fuel, oils & coolant) occupants & luggage, etc. So 2930 is that weight, as opposed to the tare weight, which is the vehicle without fluids, occupants & luggage. CVM is the weight of the tow vehicle, fully loaded & anything the vehicle is towing, in this case, the vehicle plus trailer & it's load. Hope that helps clear your queries, Randy.

The Cummins will pull whatever you put behind it. A general rule of thumb with the 6.7 is when towing, keep RPM's at or above 2,000rpms. It's the sweet spot for the engine. It gives you enough power left in the RPM range to pull but also gets you high enough in the RPM's to allow the Exhaust Brake to do something when you let off.

Two things I noticed: It seems like the fan clutch is seized so the fan is running wide open, you can hear the fan rev with the engine, and unless it's really hot it shouldn't do that. Also pause it at 13:11 and you'll see there is a massive hole in the air intake after the MAF which will cause issues, and is probably contributing to the misfire. The tapping sounds like top end, maybe a lifter. The good thing is, the 5.3 is in pretty much any GM truck, so even if you had a worst case scenario which isn't likely, you could get an engine relatively easily and cheap.

It crazy to see how common this is, I just bought a 07 Denali 5.3 envoy with 169 k with the EXACT symptoms. Yours is cylinder 1 mine is 7 the same side bunch back cylinder. It is the collapsed lifter from DOD AfM as others have said for sure. I was able to pull valve cover verify the intake rocker wasn’t moving, then pulled intake and valley cover VLOM and insert a homemade steel rod into the oil passage for that lifter and hit it with a air hammer lightly and quickly which popped the litter right back open. I then used hptuners and 2 credits to unlock ecu and disabled DOD to prevent it from going into 4 cyl mode again… I closed off the oil passage where the oil sensor is in vlom with a metal bushing and loctite, and popped the retaining rings off the solenoids on the vlom and I pulled them off. Put it all back together and have been running 1000 miles plus so far runs like new smooth as silk. I did a couple vids on it.

Advanced fuel management. Lifter collapse. Do a lifter swap to solid lifters and delete AFM. Also call hill automotive from the carfax. Get some more background on it.

23:00, that’s a ram for ya, they’re a bucking bronco until you put some load on them be it a trailer or weight in the bed, then they’re nice and smooth

Noise sounds like top end, I'm no mechanic but they are known for cam and lifter issues with high miles

It is from Washington State the first 1/2 of it's life...the dash, seals, seats & all won't be so dried out. Funny thing? Fall City is just down from Snoqualmie Falls. I've owned a few properties out that way, beautiful area- cashed out of Washington State, but those areas aren't totally ruined yet like Seattle

How did you buy that nice trailer and not ask what it's rated to carry? And how have you been around cars for so long and not know what the gross weight ratings mean?

14 MPG towing more than 5000lbs is awesome. I get about 7 mpg pulling a 7000lb trailer with a 5.3L gas engine.

The Gross Weight is the maximum for the vehicle AND any passengers/cargo. You can get a rough idea of the dry weight of the GMC by taking the GVWR and subtract the suggested weight of the passengers and cargo. It is likely that the empty weight of that thing is around 4,000 pounds. If the GVWR is 7K, then you need to deduct the dry weight of the trailer to see how much you can put on it.

"It helps to be able to see when you're driving, you know?" -Randy 2020 lmao Also, I've had three Trailblazers and one Envoy in my past. I absolutely loved those trucks. Be sure its had the ignition switch recall done on it! I can not express that hard enough. My final GM I ever owned was a Trailblazer that had a faulty ignition switch before GM finally did the recall on it. They skated me so hard about the issue. It was terrifying having that truck shut off at any speed at any point. Especially when it happened on the highway and you're just coasting along with no power steering or anything. Be safe!

So I have just a couple notes. First off I love your channel and all the content. Secondly, it's probably a lifter causing your issues with both the tick and the miss. Pretty common especially DoD trucks. I'd also like to add that GVWR on your trailer and on the Envoy is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. It's NOT the curb weight. So your trailers total weight rating is 7,000 pounds including the trailers weight and the GVWR of 6400lbs on the Envoy is for it fully loaded. The truck only weighs between 4600 and 4800lbs depending on options. For your truck it's probably 4800.

GVWR is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, which is the weight of the vehicle (or trailer) and the maximum amount of cargo weight (or people and cargo on a truck). So your Envoy weighs about 5200 lbs so that means that it has a cargo weight capacity of 1200 lbs. 5200 plus 1200 equals 6400 lbs.

Drain the oil dump in 5 quarts of ATF in the crankcase and let her idle for about 30 mins. Change oil. The ATF has detergents that will free up any sticky lifters.

Gvw is the max allowed weight. So your trailer is rated to a total 7000lbs. If you want to know what it's dry weight is, it's the tare figure. Hope that helps Randy
