Have you looked into HDU (sign foam) or PVC. If you search for sign board material there are other options as well.

hi would it be possible to use the foamboard but with 3mm primed mdf or plywood glued to the back of the foamboard maybe use a thinner foamboard in conjunction with the mdf or plywood your work looks fantastic especially as you do it by hand and not the cnc or laser

If you haven’t already, you might look into gatorboard. Like foamcore but much stronger and you can definitely get in large sheets (and because of its strength it holds up to shipping better)

That's a great call! I haven't heard of it but I'll definitely look into it, thanks

Chipboard, it’s mdf, probably just seal it before using? That might actually work, I would leave a link to some from Blick, but only if you asked me to! Lol

Somebody actually emailed me a link to something on the Blick site, what an awesome resource! They basically have every art material ever made over there 😮

One step forward, two steps back my man. I appreciate you showing us your mistakes and wanting to learn from them. I myself have made endless mistakes while woodworking, but that's what makes us better. We're only human after all. The only thing that I immediately thought of for why that glue failed was because it didn't have a porous enough substrate to lock in to. Just like with priming a wall before paint, you want to sand it beforehand so the paint has something to stick to. Sanding allows for those microgrooves to form for the paint to seep in to. Same thing with finishing a piece a wood, you wouldn't want to sand something to 2000 grit and then through Rubio on it, it will have a hard time bonding. With the whiteboard type of material, I think it's too glossy for good adhesion with your glue. Plus that wenge piece you said failed is a very porous type of wood so it also might have retained a lot of the glue and didn't have good contact. As for a solution, I think star bond is a good start, but still curious to see how it'll last in the long run. A quick google search yielded "Titebond Melamine Glue" - melamine is close to that whiteboard type of material so it may be worth checking out. Good luck!

Anything solution is always epoxy. That shit will stick to anything and you'll need a chisel to get it off.

Thank you! I try to show people the good days AND the bad days just as a reminder of that. And I think you're exactly right on that one, I think the whole point of that whiteboard material is that nothing sticks to it, hence why you're able to wipe marker off of it...I probably should have considered that. I'll definitely be checking out that melamine glue in the future, thanks again.

If you haven't found a solution yet might I suggest 1/8" plywood painted with the matte white paint you used.

Good idea. I just need to source some plywood that’s as flat as possible

@@SamMacyDesigns as long as its new it'll be flat enough and once it's fastened to the frame it really should be set. and I'd definitely apply some finish to the back to make sure to seal it from moisture.

Sorry this happened, but glad I saw the video. I also do wood art (but nowhere near as complex as yours) and was about to start using a bunch of melamine/ whiteboard type material as backers that I picked up for cheap. Now I won't.

Huh, kind of a mystery. Would say the glue had a bad reaction with the matte paint, but when the original layer of the board is coming off, that’s weird. Guess would be that the glue, paint combo is deteriorating the white on the board.

It'll be an extra step for you but laying up your own melamine sheets on plywood of whatever thickness you need could work nicely for you. There are a million different colors and sheens to pick from, I use SuperLam a fair amount
