It's such a great movie! I must've been 12/13 when I saw it first and where the Goonies felt like something you wanted your life and friends to be, Stand By Me was your life and your friends -- except no family drama for me in as a kid. But you could associate with the kid that got beaten over nothing, we had that friend. And we all knew but we all acted like it didn't happen, even him. We had that kid that was withdrawn and a dreamer, and we had the chubby kid in our group of misfit friends. And now 37 years on, I worked in film and I appreciate how Rob Reiner, took such a simple story, with no horror, no real tension basically just kids walking and talking and made it into something you keep watching. Funny thing was that 3 years ago I worked on an Indie, that had a lot of horror nods in it. And one scene the kid who played the lead fell in the water and was covered in roaches. And the director and producer marked that as a VFX shot. And me as the VFX supervisor was like: "that's gonna be hell to track. The water glistens of Sunny's body its impossible to track so we need markers all over his body, we need to paint them out, just do it practically." And the directory was like: "They will look like pieces of rubber no life... Not sure" I was like let me model 3 leeches, I will mold them and cast them in deadened platsil 10, Sunny is a skinny muscular kid, stick them on where the skin and muscles move and it will seem as though they'll move and do a test. So I made them that morning (I am in Europe they are on the East Coast), cast them FedExed them to the US they did the test and wow... It worked. Then they call came: "we want a lot of them at least 20-30 but make a 100". And there was a running joke with the lead that we had to stick of couple on his testicles. And he was like 14 or 15 and was like;"Hell no!" :D

Me being the budding little gay boy this was one of my first real crushes ever. Even now when I see it I remember why I had a crush on Vern. Vern is pure boy. In Stand By Me he was pure boy. Like when he “explains the gooch” that scene is pure boy. Actually most of Mr. O’Connells performance is that pure boy. Also River of course too. Sheesh!! I just wish something could be done for gay boys. I was 9yo when I figured it out. I just had the overwhelming sense to hug my friend. And I remember thinking uh-oh. Better not.. and I remember looking back at him and I said “I’m a Fa9907!” I’m 48 and I’ve yet to seen any girl to make me feel the way I felt that day after school lunch going to our seats is when it happen. The next thought was “God hates you ya know..” wah waaaaaa. -Debbie Downer. Anyhow we rewatched that damn movie tonight and i had to analyze why I liked Vern. And it was the “all boy” thing about him. Like to a fault. And yep I’m all boy to a fault. Lol

Jerry turned into a good looking guy after being the pudgy Vern. I actually enjoyed him in Kangaroo Jack, it's a stupid movie but when you have a cast like Jerry O Connell, Estelle Warren, Anthony Anderson, Michael Shannon and Christopher Walken, you can make the dumbest movie watchable.
