I so enjoy Neil's curiosity, enthusiasm and intelligence. You know when Neil feels the need to retire - hopefully he'll consider producing a children's science program. I can easily imagine Neil would receive joy and many of our children - inspiration.

I hope and really doubt he would ever truly retire. He may someday relinquish his title as director of the Hayden Planetarium to someone else. Science communication isn’t a job to him, explaining the universe is his oxygen.

In the 70's I read all the books by Carlos Castaneda and the teachings of Don Juan. Back then the thought of multi verses were considered the ramblings of a mind distorted by psychotropic drugs. It amazes now how science is lining up with the beliefs held by the Yaqui Indians for centuries

How fascinating when I thought that they were both challenging each other and that one was the favourite; whereas if you kept watching, you see that they are working with the minus and positive. A few times where there were a sense of fear in terms of “If they know what you were thinking about like speech bubble,” then that’s inferior. I can honestly say, there’s a fight of infinite analysis to exist for more knowledge of out of space, and inside the sea and this seminar shows that even if you are on your own in this planet, there’s still hope for a mass of intelligence and yet humility of a drop of a carbonated bubble. I know I’m very self depricative as a person but to engage with society today is going to be very difficult. So teachers like you are needed.

He's so empty and a real loser. Neil deDumba$$ Tyson asked about the start of the universe and if he believes in God: Larry King, "Who started all this; do you believe in God?" Neil, "The proper question should be who or what started it, but I don't know. If I don't know I'm going to say I don't know." from the beginning of this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF7Uhmd8ZdGBnLc What we KNOW and have NO doubts about... Real science says nothing does nothing. Real science says if there was something there already it must fit with the evidence of what we know. We know the 1LT says there's a conservation of energy. It can change forms and neither can be created or destroyed. Creation cannot happen by natural means. The 2LT has various aspects, one being the universe is winding down, entropy. Usable energy is becoming less usable, so at one point usable energy was at its max. This all points to a supernatural creation, by a supernatural creator at a certain point in which matter, space and time were created. When I read how it can happen otherwise, ALL the fools resort to science-fiction. Once a supernatural creation is accepted, then the next step is finding proof of what supernatural power did it. Neil does not know BASIC science. Not only can't we have creation without God, Neil does not know that we also can't have science without God. The laws of nature can only come from a Lawgiver, God. Tyson says his dung at about 2:00 in the video below about the eye evolution. It is proven false in the rest of the video. But to shallow people, to hell with details and what the evidence shows. Your agenda is all that matters. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmjLY3uNmLmql5Y He IS Neil deDumba$$ Tyson.

@@moemohamed8891 The earth has been habitable and inhabitable several times throughout history so I don't think there can be a specific time. For example; there were 5 Ice Ages and in-between it became habitable again. Then there were times when the earth was too hot. So our current history and evolution as we know it could have happened many times before starting again over billions of years. There literally could have been technological advances, buildings and vehicles. Just over all that time there would be no evidence of it left behind.

Time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma. INSTANTANEITY is FUNDAMENTAL to the FULL and proper understanding of physics/physical experience. Ultimately and truly, TIME is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. The ultimate unification of physics/physical experience combines, BALANCES, AND includes opposites, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT. It ALL makes perfect sense. THINK !!! The Earth that undergoes time DILATION IS thus represented (ON BALANCE) as what is A POINT in the night sky, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. (So, notice that the BLUE SKY IS no longer visible. Think.) E=mc2 IS F=ma. It is FULLY proven. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Alas, the INTEGRATED EXTENSIVENESS of THOUGHT (AND description) is improved in the truly superior mind. I have truly, CLEARLY, AND MATHEMATICALLY unified physics/physical experience. OVERLAY what is THE EYE in BALANCED RELATION to/WITH what is THE EARTH. (Notice the black space of THE EYE, AND the DOME of a person's eye is ALSO visible.) THE EARTH is ALSO blue. Again, E=mc2 IS F=ma. The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky. Time dilation proves that E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma, AS electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. It ALL makes perfect sense. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. BALANCE AND completeness go hand in hand. By Frank DiMeglio

This is what critics of Mr. Wolff and worker cooperatives don’t seem to understand. He’s not saying “co-ops ARE socialism.” He’s saying that worker cooperatives should be at the center of the shift from capitalism to socialism. Uniting the proletariat from within their workplaces is key. It will form the foundation for revolution (political, social, and otherwise).

I'm gonna defend the interviewer here. It's not his job to be all cuddly and friendly. Tyson (whom I am a big fan of btw) is a very influential, and therefore powerful, person. When he speaks, people listen. When he writes a book, people read it. Hence, it's the interviewer's damned duty to ask tough questions and yes, be critical and challenging at times. That's the whole point of interviews like this. You want a preacher and a choir boy, you go to church. But a scientist who prides himself in valuing facts, logic and the scientific method, should be asked tough and critical questions. That tends to lead to the best answers too.

The problem with the "why" question is that it is actually two distinct questions. One asks for a cause, and is answerable an "how" a thing came to be. The other asks for a goal, and is not answerable with out a plan and a knowledge of it. "Why did the toronado happen?" Because the interaction between two air masses resulted in an intense, localized vortex to form and propagate. "Why did the tornado happen?" Because the air resented the existence of the trailer park. Or it was a punishment from an angry god. Or the Vogons needed a clear space to fly through. Or ... well, I don't know, and I don't believe there is an answer to that "why" question.

Books that don't do this are usually referred to as "text books" simply stating purported facts, some of which will be proven wrong in future generations.

I wanted to ask why the fusion of iron in stars is endothermic. I thought I'd look it up on Wikipedia but I got lost and ended up at pulse oximetry. There should be a "Neil" version of Alexa.

Imagine fusing atoms to get a bigger one as if you make a rubber band ball out of the same sizes of rubberbands. At the point of iron, when you try to add more rubberbands, they snap. The forces and energy at play, that keep the ball together, aren't enough anymore to sustain a bigger ball. More energy input is needed to force that, hence endothermic. Hope this made enough sense.

I liked the conversation about intelligence. I would add, I would think that intelligence is secondary feature of life unlike locomotion and eyesight. For example, maybe the reason why intelligence isn’t common in the record of life may be because it’s not needed for life forms to perform the basic functions needed for survival. You think about technology. There was a point when your cell phone only made and received phone calls, and that was fine for the time because your device did what was intended of it at a basic level. You fast-forward to today, phones can order Sushi, direct you in traffic, entertain us when we’re bored, and even connect us in more ways than that was possible 30 years ago. All of these added features of modern cell phones (literally called smart phones) are secondary features that go beyond the primary functions for which the cellular phone was originally intended for. I always believed that intelligence played a similar role in the evolution of life. Intelligence is not a guaranteed upgraded feature of life, but it is a later feature of an advanced life form. Like I think it’s safe to say that mammals and birds are slightly smarter overall than the average non-avian dinosaur from 65 million years ago, and that dinosaurs are smarter than what proceeded them. So intelligence, even on dog-like level seems like a late game feature of life.

Smart phones can be great and bad. Just like tv can be great and fun but bad. AirPods are euphoric but there’s limits that even people cross. I see your point. But there’s limits where people abuse. What is the primary of life? Are you saying that the clutches of technology or anything else are superior than actual human life. Because if you saying that. Then your right to some degree. We tend know no boundaries.

People live and fought for survival even for rights centuries and so occurs to be that way in this current time stepping into the millennium HOWEVER basic needs and tools from economic adapting and learning has to change. Because it’s more than just learning how to do this or that. It’s becoming a human being first and breaking down the key elements. Relying on technology is not all great. It can be time consuming, destructive for the environment, and corrupt the natural thinking process. Read books are more organic.

I don't much like this interviewer. In short, NdGT is great as usual, but the interview is hampered by the interviewer's mediocrity.

Because (in my opinion) the interviewer wanted to bring God and religion into the mix and wanted Neil to debate it, but was too afraid to just come out and say it and when he did finally say GOD, he then tried to hide behind Dawkins and throw him under the bus as a scape goat for the God subject. Loved how Neil answered it without throwing Dawkins under the bus, because he was right, science is about teaching people.
@MGShadow1989

It was the simple fact he kept interupting that Neil that annoyed me. Just shut the fuck up and let the man answer your damn question, not only is it rude to ask someone something and interupt their answer but it also just downright disrespectful and insulting when the person you are interupting is vastly more inteligent. The only person in this video with a misplaced ego is the interviewer.
