Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I missed a couple holders this past weekend because the drag was set to loose.

I’ve always relied on the drag. The use of the thumb bar instead of the drag is a great tip.

Broke my musky pole cause too much drag. Was my new PB so got excited. Didn’t thumb it and it ran under the boat and I wasn’t able to keep my rod from hitting the side of my boat. Was able to get it in the net tho. 48 1/2 inches!!

I always forget to loosen the drag on my reels at the end of the day. You can practice the thumbing technique with smaller bass also.

Really good stuff there Randy. Especially about storing with the drag all the way off. I prefer thumbing myself.

You can sort of adjust your drag to the bait by increasing the rod angle to the fish. When your rod is pointed at the fish the easier the fish can pull drag, as you increase the rod angle away from the fish the harder it is to pull drag.

i learn to fish without a drag as kid dad bought me straight gear 8 0 8 i had to wind backwards not to break them off or straighten the hook.Dad was teaching me to bass fish keep control of the bass so when i did hook a big one it wouldnt just pull drag an tangle me up in the tree or whatever she try to get to in order to get off.Dad an his best friend camp every weekend an bass fish is how i know so much about bass fishing an my friend dad made his own custom lurers why i have a 13x13 room slam full of lurer making things i got more than any company has an i never sell them cause i dont want nobody have what i do an i cant just sell lures to people i dont have trust in myself.i been making few short video an say everyone i get 1000 subscribers i show the lurer i caught record fish on.i caught 7 i just have caught state record spotbass

Very enlightening, Randy, about your usage of your baitcasting reel’s thumb bar for fighting a fish……Do you wind your spinning reels in reverse to let a big fish run, or do you rely solely on your spinning reel’s drag ?

Odd how drag settings for baitcasters is so different to spinrods. I learned on spinrods to set the drag about 75% of line rating. Never thought of that for baitcasters. Usually have mine just short of locked down. Same line on both. Lubricating the drag? Does'nt sound right, but willing to try it. Why? Cuz Randy says so!! Listen and learn youngins!!!

I never lock down my drag. If I were to run a fowl with a spook and a jet ski, I don't want to go waterskiing! I say that in complete honesty. How it got hooked is a guess and the butt hole probably found it when he trailered his PWC. I hate PWC's!!!!
