Test drove a 96 with the 6.5 and was a half ton, Test drove an 03 6.0 2500HD after that. the 03 came home with me. Those 6.5's were just terrible.

@@2jimszrnorth802 them vortecs are good engines, i have one but i want to get a 6.5 in another truck and bullet proof it estimated cost is 1k of new parts and how much an engine costs but i have a friend getting rid of his 6.5 and swapping in a 5.3, so i am lookin for a squarebody or something simple
@swamp-yankee2 жыл бұрын
@@2jimszrnorth802 they won’t pull like a 6.0 that’s for sure, but they don’t guzzle fuel the same way either. Ive got a 2003 2500hd that is our main farm truck. I’m looking for an old 1 ton with a 6.2 or 6.5 for a fire wood delivery truck though. It’s not a bad engine in the right application. The military still runs loads of them, and they wouldn’t if they weren’t any good. They just aren’t fit for a tow rig. My neighbor gets 20mpg bumping around back roads in his, and parts are still manufactured, plus there’s thousands in junk yards.

Not sure what hes doing but my 93 6.5l pulled a 36ft 5th wheel weighing in at 12k, with no problems at all.... quite honestly the best damn truck I've owned. I know theres alot of haters out there, but I got no answers, as to why? Maybe I just got lucky? I know they DO say 92-93 were the best years, so who knows? It's an extended cab long bed dually 4x4, all stock.

I have the same set up as you do , i pull a 2000 jayco 3610 fifth wheel weighing in at around 11,500 , my 6.5 does good on the flats but in the mountains she struggles a little bit but gets the job done.

The 6.2 and 6.5 are amazing engine. GM just fucked them up. They never made crazy high power, and the transmissions weren't the awful. But they could pull all day

I remember a lot of people talking down about 6.5 diesels in school and how weak they are, but I grew up learning how to drive one and it never had any problems tearing up what it was given. Grandpa's old '94 k2500 with a 5 speed stick. Once though, it was down on power on a road trip from a lack of boost with the vacuum pump busted. However, what it lost in performance it gained in coal rolling ability, a very effective tailgater repellant. Then I was working at a tire shop and had to bring in a truck to the back for a new set of rubbers. I was approaching it and was thinking "sweet, old chevy with the same motor... but an automatic transmission". From the dashboard it was either a '95 or '96. Started it up, threw it in gear, god did it drag its feet. So, now I think I know where the rumours of weakness came from. Not the motor, but the slushbox.

Wish the video didn't cut out early. I'm wondering how EGTs responded to higher boost as well as power. I'm also wondering if the truck adjusts fuel to the higher than stock boost.

The only time I see these V8 diesels smoke black is with bad injectors. My guess is the rotary style injection pump with a cam ring and plunger type delivery element can't reach the high ('power') delivery volumes per cylinder cycle that an inline setup with individual delivery pumps can. Look at the p7100 on a Cummins 5.9 and how they can smoke haha
@vivillager2 жыл бұрын
@@jacktopolinski2475, I have a 93 6.5 diesel, it smoked white at start up, think it was a bad pump. Replaced pump, injectors, and glow plugs, white smoke went away. Also have a 5.9 Cummins, CP3 common rail. It smoked black under heavy acceleration. New injectors and pump on that one, smoke went away.
