Got 400,000 miles on my 96 Caprice daily driver. It still has the original engine and transmission, never rebuilt. I think the key for the transmission longevity was switching over to Dexron VI transmisiion fluid instead of the standard Dexron IIE they came with from the factory. My driver side inner fenderwell disintegrated, so I used fiberglass mat and POR15 to rebuild it. Same for my drivers floorpan, sheetmetal, fiberglass mat, and POR15. I have two stainless marine fuel straps bolted to a 1/4" inch plate inside my trunk holding up my gas tank. Thank goodness I have two low-mileage B4U models in my garage.

@TrakSpock1 out of curiosity, what's your transmission maintenance regiment for mileage that high? I know there's a lot of debate about transmission maintenance if the original fluid was never changed at 30-40K on a lot of vehicles. I bought my 4.8 Sierra with 320k on it for basically nothing, original transmission died at 375 with the factory fluid still in it, and it wasn't even slipping. Planetary gear failure in this case. Never actually owned a vehicle with a slipping 4L60E until I recently got a 2012 V6 silverado with 115k that's lost 3/4 for free.

You’ve owned that Impala for a bunch of years, invested a bunch of time and money.. curious why so few miles on it?
@bom_LS2_gto4 ай бұрын
@brandonschmidtke3662 It sat for a year or so with a nuked transmission, then the opti began to slowly fail over maybe two seasons. Spent a lot of time while I worked on the GTO. Wasn't also really sure what should happen with the car, so some time was needed to decide. Plus, my work requires a full size truck every day, so my time/ability to drive it is hampered, especially with Illinois winters and salt. Try to save the experience for nice days, events, or weekend cruises. Put almost 1500 miles on it this year, double what was put on it in the past 6 years.

the chassis looks terrible with all this rust on it. you should sand blast the chassis and clean it well. paint it mat black ,before you place the new mud guards .
