Note to the BBC - give this guy his own show, it would play in the US too. You could do little side trips on land to bring in the history crowd. You are a natural. Interview some of the lock tenders, get into the pubs and such. If I had your temperament, and equipment, that's what I'd do. Curious as to who pays to maintain all those locks, they all seem to be very leaky.

Thank you. The canal network is maintained, as far as they can on limited funds, by the Canal and River Trust which is a charity (to which all boaters pay an annual licence fee)

Another beautiful video, as always, David. Those pinwheels along the fields serve 2 purpose, 1, they are pretty, 2, they cause an underground vibration that is supposed to annoy burrowing critters, like gophers, etc., to keep them away from the roots of plants. I am not sure how effective they are, but here in the States, many farm stores and garden centers sell them for that reason. :)
@CruisingTheCut
@CruisingTheCut 7 жыл бұрын
That is the weirdest thing! I went past a bit of canal with loads of mole-holes recently, maybe I should have planted some of those things in the ground there!
@JessieColt2
@JessieColt2 7 жыл бұрын
You could start a new trend amongst the boaters! Plant a pinwheel along the bank each time to moor up in a 48 hour spot. Write the date on one of the petals. It would add color to the banks of the canals, and give other boaters something to wonder about if they are not aware of the new trend! LOL

David the easiest way to remove bird poo is a garden sprayer full of water, simply spray it to soften it then go back and spray it off the roof or solar panels and down the side of the boat. I use to own a black car and I am sure birds hated black as it was a regular target. Leaving it on was deadly with paint of that era and it was the easiest and most hygienic way to remove it. 🦜🦜🦜🦜🦜 Also I think all the Morris Minors are here there are quite a few very active clubs here. 🚗🚗🚗🚗🚗

Another reason to not moor under trees is that in the autumn they drop nuts. If a nut hits a brass roof vent it goes “ PING”. We call them ping trees. One of the worst areas for this is just the Rugely side of Wolsey Bridge.

I suppose you might have looked into this, but ever think of using an electric trolling motor which can be lifted off to place on either port or stbd at the bow to help you work against the wind? Of course with control back aft. UPDATE: Sorry to say it isn't very cheap or practical to have a small motor. For a boat your size, you'd have to have a tunnel thruster at the bow & from a few forums I visited, it'd be £2700 + to buy & install it...maybe more. Still, it would be an experiment to see if a small portable motor could be fitted the bow to assist in keeping the boat straight on a windy day.

Hi David, I know pubs aren't your particular thing, but the Star Inn is a bit different. It has 13 rooms and dates from the 14th century and is supposed to be the oldest pub on the waterways. None of the rooms are on the same level. It's very quirky. It's also right next to Stone bottom lock.

I love your videos David. Good job. I use an adblocker when I watch so you do not get any money from the ones I actually watch. I am ashamed to admit I never thought of removing the adblocker and just letting your videos run until I saw someone else comment about doing that. So now I take the adblocker off and run your videos at 2X speed at night while I sleep. I ran through 1-94 last night with the ads running. I will restart watching today at about 195 where I am at present with the adblocker on. Then tonight it is back to no adblocker so you can earn a bit of money.

I too have been binge watching from the first episode and I wondered why after all this time you still had no way to harness or take advantage of the wind! Surely a bit more power would be beneficial in the long run?... And apart from the first April fool farcical video I have enjoyed and liked every one so far! (the other April fools ones were much improved... in my opinion!) And have subbed to all of those people you suggested but will finish your series before I catch up on theirs! Sir.. I love your videos....like every time i watch one...but as an American i have a few questions for you. I want to take my wife on a narrow boat holiday in the UK for our 25 th anniversary...she cares not for the idea. She proposed buying our own boat here in the states for the cost of a holiday there. Dang it!...Wanted to see some of the sights in your videos and some of the sights from the history channel(huge WWII buff). Her and i are buying a new place with a HUGE barn and my first task is a narrow boat. But i have several questions i would like your help with if it not too much trouble. We have no canals here in west Michigan but i want my own boat similar to yours. I want a semi trad. Have been collecting parts for some time in my current garage/barn. Engine, transmission( sorry gearbox) and with my engineering degree plan on starting with a large propane tank as a base. Have plenty of tools, a gantry, welders, plasma cutters, steering parts, diesel engine( a two cylinder Iseki of Approx 18 H.P.) (KW ?).. I have above average resources for steel,tools, carpentry. My friend is a finish carpenter and electrician. My questions are... Height from waterline to uppermost part of vessel for tunnel clearance. we have no tunnels but we do have bridges, and we have plenty of rivers and bridges. Since we have no locks i wanted a wider beam for stability. When you get a chance look at a map of western Mi. USA. west Michigan a town named Saugatuck on the Kalamazoo river... Our base. was thinking 10 foot beam for stability on the the small lake of Kalamazoo. and the Grand river through the great lakes town of Grand haven mi.. Roof to waterline is important for two reasons. Getting under the bridges on the two rivers afore mentioned...but worst of all. seeing the traffick in front of the boat. I am 6 foot 7" tall(metric?) and my wife is 5 foot 2 inches. How can we both see running the tiller?! Quite often lake Michigan is smooth...but can get really big waves so i need the beam for stability...but i digress. I wish she would go with me there to the U.K. but it does not look good. What is the purpose of the "bird boxes" on the roof sir? Ventilation. I am sure a narrow boat here,,,NOTHING like it anywhere here even though HOLLAND MI...as the name implies is VERY dutch, and would like to travel the black river also....when able sir any info would love to hear from you @ D.Dykgraaf@att.net

Truly beautiful scenery in this installment, as there is in so many others. I watched this one, then immediately clicked 'replay' and watched it through again. A few years ago, I learned of the German word "Fernweh," which loosely translated means " longing or homesickness for a place to which you've never been." Not until I became a subscriber to your channel did I fully understand. Your canals have become that for me. Thank you for showing a part of the UK that the average American never gets to see. Most of us don't even know the canals exist, let alone have any knowledge of that slow-motion way of life. Time to binge watch from episode #1 again.

looking how calm the water was reminded me of when we lived in northern illinois on the chain of lakes. you would be on the water all weekend with guests and family and friends along with a ton of other boats--and literally some days whitecaps on the water. but come monday morning, when all the weekenders had gone home, you would go out on the water and it was like a sheet of glass. brought back some great memories.

Despite the fact that I live in Illinois, I have never been on the lakes in the north but it sounds amazing. My wife's family has an RV and dock on the Kankakee River and they also describe mornings on the water like sheets of glass!

nothing bad about geese or sheep, but just wondering, do you ever see really wild canal wildlife (exotic stuff such as water-rats, otters, unusual birds of prey, etc)? how much of a healthy ecosystem is the rivers/canal system we have today?

6.10 - rare breed British Longhorn Cattle. I say rare but they are increasing in numbers - something to do with the way the fat is distributed evenly through the muscle so when it is cooked away there is an o[en tender fibrous meat.

12:23 I'm working my way through the vlog chronologically [for the first time ;) ], so I don't know if you have done it _after_ this video or not, but have you shown a complete cycle of going through a lock at a _normal_ pacing- coming up to, mooring, walking over, opening gate(s), walking back, driving in, etc.- _all_ of it in real-time? I assume it can take about +/- 15minutes per lock without volunteers and assuming no one else is in there before you going the other way. Perhaps with multiple cameras recording different angles at the same time, if it's not too much to ask. The only boat locks near me are about two hours away in Ballard, Washington en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballard_Locks and those are [two] great big fresh-to-saltwater concrete and steel beasts working on hydraulic piston rams and a dedicated control tower, so I find your vlog much amusing by comparison because a single person does it all by hand and the height difference is only a few feet!

I've not done it with multiple cameras etc because it would be quite the job to set them all up and do it without getting in the way of someone else (another boat will always turn up as soon as you try to set something up!)

@@CruisingTheCut Well, I wasn't really thinking of, like, _extra_ cameras with tripods on the ground or borrowing someone to hold one for you, but rather just the ones you already have- the one in front, the one on the roof (handheld?), and the first-person camera I've seen you use a few times; nothing you haven't normally done before. Just... for once, don't speed up the footage of going through a lock, is all I'm asking.

One of the many reasons I enjoy your videos - you always have 2 days in a vlog (i.e say 'good morning' twice), away from the unwritten rule that says that vlogs are always (and must be made) daily, like a 'dear dairy'. It gives me the illusion that the video is very long, but it's actually only 10-15 minutes each, great job!

Your video's have shown me how beautiful the canals are and also that the canal boat life is not for everyone. Not only not cheap but alot of work, alot more work than I imagined. Thanks for doing the work for us. You're a great narrator too. PS my cousin told me about your channel.

Seems to be a narrowboat! ;) I'm assuming you mean that green thing, to me it just looks like a bit of weed or plant that's drifted into the canal (looks quite a bit like corn leaves).

Hi David...I was wondering why because your on your own you haven't invested in a remote control system to help you in the locks?...
