In this video we clean up and drive my grandfathers 1928 Ford model A, that he has owned since 1977 . The car has been parked for the last 17-18 years but thankfully he has stored it inside. It has a flathead inline 4 cylinder 201 cid. with 40 horsepower , and 3 speed manual transmission. I have always loved this car as he has owned it for my entire life and I played in it a lot as a child.

Spent a lot of my youth wrenching on anything with a motor with my father. I learned so many things and have so many priceless memories. Seeing you doing the same with your children moves me to tears sometimes. I remember being so mad at him when i was 7 and he bought a fixerup minibike for my twin brother and myself. He wouldn't let us ride it until we completely tore it down, rebuilt it and could explan the basics of the operation of a 2 stroke motor to him... I hit that subscribe button for ya and I'm having a vyeenya for my new homies.

Life is good in a model A. You got yourself an enclosed cabin to protect from the elements (heater optional). And you start it with a push button so you don't take out an arm cranking. And a windshield wiper too, just not an electric one.

The car cleaned up beautifully, new roof skin and some beauty work on the paint should be catching eyes all the way down the road! The steering box of a Model A is meant to be lubricated with a thick oil originally designated 600W (About 120-240 SAE). The grease fitting on the box really did cause some confusion back when they came off the line like that, but the manual and service bulletins specifically warn to only use 600W oil and not grease for steering box lubrication. Since the Differential, Transmission, and Steering Box all take the same thick oil, I just buy it in bulk for all three. Either 120-240 SAE from the store (Whatever your car likes best) or 600W from one of the Model A parts vendors.

I love these cars. Original My father in law has a 1936 three window coup V8 with a rumble seat. For the most part its original. He did change out the brakes to hydraulic and the engine has been changed out. He took the body off the frame and cleaned and painted the farme. Then he had the body painted. Its cordoba grey. Its really beautiful. Other than that is pretty much original. I haven't had the chance to ride in it yet but I love it. My father in law doesn't want a hot rod. He says there are only so many of these still around and each one you rod its one less original. Just an FYI the bumper is not chrome its stainless steel. Black was the favorite color for Model T and A. Black was the only color that would dry fast enough to pain the body and keep up with the assembly line.

That flathead 4 runs really well. I agree that you need to fine tune the timing to get more advancement out of it. You really fit the part when you dress for it. I really enjoyed it when the whole family is involved. To make sure you get all the sludge out of the engine run it for awhile and change the oil one more time so it will be ready for storage. See if Coker tire sponsor you some new Casings for the 28. Sorry for the long post. May you and your family have a Blessed One Sir.

Hey! This one looks 100% better than that that one that was so washed out with too much light. One way to clean the crankcase is to do what we used to. Before you change the oil, start and warm the engine till you can have it at a slow idle then add a pint of kerosene to the crankcase and let the engine idle another 5 minutes. It won't hurt the engine and it will break up that sludge in there and the oil will drain much easier. Be thankful it has all those zerks. That's why it has lasted so long, unlike modern vehicles where when the part wears out you just have to toss it and buy another because you couldn't grease it to keep it from wearing. That diesel oil likely has zink in it which helps keep the valves and seats lubricated well as they're a softer material than modern valves. Back when gasoline was leaded that was what lubed the valves. You can also buy a product called Instead-O-Lead and add it to your gas tank and it will help as well. Even with all that though those valves will get leaky over time and not seal well and it'll be time to "lap the valves" which was a common job on older engines. Somewhere around here I have a lapper which is basically just a dowel rod with a suction cup on each end. You'd stick that suction cup to a valve, put some grinding compound between the valve and seat and spin that dowel rod back n forth between your hands and that ground the valve and seat so they would seal against each other well again. Back in the day you would have removed the inspection stickers or else after a few years you'd not be able to see through the windshield, lol. They weren't for vehicle emissions, but more for, are the tires with enough tread to be legal...stuff like that, do the lights all work, etc. and they were also a form of automotive tax and you got a new one each year. Now on something as old as that if it had an A, B or C sticker about that size I'd definitely leave those as they were WWII gas rationing stickers. If you had an "A" card your vehicle was considered the lowest priority for fuel and you were allowed to buy 5 gallons a week. Even then you wouldn't drive much because you couldn't buy new tires or other maintenance stuff at all because the rubber and lubricants, etc. all went to the war effort. Sorry for such a long comment...I tend to ramble on a lot.

Hearing that car run my first thought was the Waltons. John boy's car sounded like that. Great old car. When I was a kid we went to California from Oklahoma to visit my great grandmother every other year. We went by train until my dad bought a new 1950 Chevrolet. Going through the desert almost all cars had a bag of water or two hanging from the front bumper in case the car got hot. We never had to use our water but we saw people who did.

I love that little Goat that your daughter was holding, I kinda think Pebbles is spoiled already. That '28 Ford runs very good man I would love to go for a ride in that car. All you needed with the blue jeans and suspenders was a black over coat and Eliot Ness would have been proud. You have got her road ready and that's wonderful. And Rocky says hey I ain't about to be intimidated by the bigger Goat this is my place. I love that old Falcon also and look forward to seeing you work on it when the time comes. I have really enjoyed seeing the “A” on the road again. I like the old pictures of cars that have been in the family. I have a 1924 Ford T that I had before my kids were born so there are pictures of them all through their lives in the “T”. My son has it now so there are pictures of my grandkids in it . My son is 48 now 👍👍🎩

Hey guys! Reminds me of restoring a 1928 model a open cab pickup with my pop. He is gone now, but the memories will be with me forever. (Tip) aluminum foil , balled up and dipped in water is the best thing I have found to restore rusty and lightly pitted chrome. You have to try it! You will never spend on sos steel wool or scotch brute again!

Granny goat paused and stop at the entrance of the garage on the first video when you and the family first had your test drive. I think she was a little nervous for you all , cool thing to see an old goat do her thing too . Tell me Sleeper dude how much would you sell that picture of your thumb nail in a poster size for $. A rule of thumb I was taught was for old vehicles 55+ or more in age after you drainout all of the old oil was to add backin some lucas and diesel and run it for about 5 mins... Let it warm it up good, shut er down and yank the drain plug.. The diesel mixed with lucas will scrub and basically do the same as a hot acid bath... It will break loose almost all of the sludge gunk and any leftover metal material that may be stuck in valleys or channels within the block.... I have seen ungodly amounts of crap flushout of an old engine block and it works very well.... When you did the front bearings that is a open & shut case of dirt and water contaminated grease.... Water breaks it down making it harden up & the dirt makes it a funky brownish grey color

Man this was a good video. That oil kind of look a lil weird but everything turned out nice. The cleanup was simple and easy and you could tell the difference. That was awesome seeing the wife driving the vehicle. I really like to test-drive especially with Ralphie in the video at 33:05 when Ralphie said that will be terrible. Boy i tell you Ralphie is funny. It was also cool to see Ralphie driving the vehicle at the end. At first I thought you was doing the video without your flip-flops on. I love how you switch your clothes in seconds. Yes I was told they had flip flops back in the days too. I was told that's all my grandfather wore back in the days was just flip flops because he had very extremely wide feet with toes that were equally straight across. But he had normal size toes it's just his toes was very very extremely wide. I see where my extremely wide feet come from now in the family. Just back doing Christmas I was looking at some pictures of my grandfather wearing flip-flops back in the day & till this day my grandfather is still wearing nothing but flip-flops. He only wear shoes and boots for certain things but other than that he is in flip flops 24/7 even when is 20 , 30 , 40 degrees outside he still wearing flip-flops to the store. My dad does not have wide feet & his toes are not equally straight across but his toes are spread out. I apologize for slightly jumping off the subject but but yes they did have their flip flops back in those days. The video thank you for for sharing.
