ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen-life/

🚪🚪🚪I know decluttering doesn't happen overnight or even on the first try. It's a life long way of life. I just cleaned out my closet, and KNOW I have a lot more to declutter. Baby steps! Great post :) 💜 PS love the BIRD SKIRT!!

It's so refreshing to see a minimalist closet that isn't blazers, jeans, and t-shirts that isn't focused on being stylish. I feel much more inspired to choose items I want instead of items that all pair well fit a particular style. Love the color and whimsy simplicity.🚪

I honestly like that you include those normal everyday moments. The look on your face after opening up the closet from shoving everything in. Sooo relatable. That kind of thing happens; you need to set everything down or quickly put everything away to accommodate for other parts of life. It probably was a lot easier to get back into the groove of decluttering because of how few items you have. Thank you for being real and not worrying so much about the "staged" look like so many social media influencers do.

I would love to see what you add to your wardrobe! I have definitely found that having a more minimalistic wardrobe has been so freeing, because I don't have to think as hard about what I'm going to wear. And also, I don't feel so bummed out from seeing clothing in my closet that didn't fit or make me happy. ❤️

Thank you for being a normal person about this 😩 🚪 It's been so chaotic trying to find a relatable person talking about this topic. I'm also moving to Austria soonish to be with my partner (we marry in July) and I need to really pare down what I own and get my stuff in line with values of environmental sustainability, reuse, and longevity. I want stuff I'm not embarrassed to pass on to my daughter and other planned children. ♥️

Yes! I'd like to see how you go about purchasing new clothing. I've got the throwing out down and since retiring (professional clothes gone) plus I have moved from Alaska to Utah and I need to purchase some warmer weather clothing, but don't know what the process is. I don't love in store shopping and would prefer to shop online. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.🚪

I order mostly online for clothing. Whatever doesn’t fit or I don’t like I send back right away or if it’s at a store that is physically close to me I will run in real quick just to return and then leave. I spend way less money this way than actually in store I see so much I like and want to grab it all. Spending money online for me is much better. I keep to a budget and this especially goes for groceries for us as well. I can just purchase what we need and use. Impulse buying for me is INSIDE the stores 🫣

Just here to say I am trying to declutter but everytime I get to the most and sentimental part (which contains the most of my clutter) I stop and can't let go. I have subscribed a long time ago but finally going to watch all of your video's to help me pull through decades of clutter. They contain memories for me but its also weighing me down. Maybe I need a tiny box and collect the important stuff and let go of all the others. I am ready for a life of minimalism. It's better for me and my family but I do realize it's part of my anxiety. So it's very emotional and confronting. You are one of few who understand this and why I followed you for tips and guidance. Thank you ❤️

@Marissa Miller Thank you Marissa! I am happy I found you. I also found another similar channel. You went through the same and that resonates with me. Evert item I feel a rush of happy memories pass by and it is emotional departing with it. I want at least one memory box but need to declutter at least 80%...I am working first with the easy part. Clothings and papers. My collection goes back to childhood so it's intense but very much needed. I feel it's weighing me down. Also if I am not here one day my children are burdened with stuff they don't need.

As someone in fashion I collected way to many clothes over the years. It’s really hard to get rid of them for me since I make clothes, have emotional attachments to my clothes and collected vintage for a while. I’m now at a place in my life where I realize I don’t have the time anymore to own a wardrobe that’s too big to actually enjoy (I’m a busy student with a job on the side) your videos have really helped me take the pressure off decluttering and make it a process that I can go through in my own time. So thank you for this. I wish you all the best 💜

Thank you for mentioning your eating disorder, and for saying out loud that it’s ok to eat what you want, when you want! And that it’s ok for your weight to fluctuate! Just, thank you. I don’t hear those things as often as I need to hear them, and it’s a delight to hear it sprinkled into your real-life videos as just a “by the way”, and not a video that is _about_ EDs or ED recovery. You are living your recovery, and knowing that it’s possible is so encouraging! Thank you. ❤

you mentioned "it doesn't need to spark joy, it can be practical!" Which totally resonates. Once I saw those items that used to annoy the crap out of me because they're helping you do what you gotta do, it definitely helped shift my mindset and actually made me love and and find joy in the function they serve me. The book "Goodbye Things" by Fumio Sasaki aligns with this well, and even though the author had a super niche experience that doesn't really relate to me (living in a Tokyo apartment as a single man), I still find value reading it every year to check in.

This is a great system and I've been using it for years. At the beginning of every school year, all my hangers faced one way. When I wore something, I would turn the hanger around. Right before the next school year started, I would get rid of everything that was still on a front-facing hanger.

I really struggle with looking at my things and thinking, "Am I minimalist enough?" Like you, I'm very cautious about bringing things in, so my rule for the past 5 or so years has been that if something comes in, something must go out. I like the balance, and that way I never go over my internal limit. I really like how you kept track of how many items you removed and brought in. I also REALLY love your clothing colors. Most minimalist wardrobes I see have very natural or neutral colors, which I think sets a precedent that to be or look minimalist, you have to stick to those palettes. There is nothing wrong with those colors of course - I think they're quite beautiful! It was just nice to see a wardrobe that wasn't so neutral, as I could also relate to your colorfulness.

Yes to maternity clothes that still get used! I have a couple maternity pieces in my wardrobe that I still wear a ton. No one would ever know they're maternity. You helped me say goodbye to my faaaavourite bedsheets today, they were really worn out, but I put off doing it because I’ve had them for so long and had such a strong emotional attachment to them as I’d had them for 10 years and they had kept me cosy and brought so much comfort- even when I was bedbound with depression, and my late dog and me used to cuddle up on them, it was tough to throw them out but they weren’t usable they had holes all over cause I held on that long. Today I hugged those sheets sooo tight and thanked them for everything- all the comfort, all the amazing sleeps, all the memories cuddled up with my dog who we lost in 2021. It almost hurt to say goodbye, seeing you get emotional whilst saying goodbye to your hoodie really helped me to say goodbye too, thank you so much your videos help me so so much xxx

This video was both entertaining and helpful. I have watched a number of videos about wardrobe decluttering but yours has been the most helpful and inspirational. Including the interruption gave your video a real authenticity and made me feel like I was actually there with you. I would really like to see the items that you will be adding to your wardrobe. 🚪 love how you said that some items, instead of decluttering, you can mend or tweak and in doing so you will start loving the item again! I have a 5+ year old navy rain/wind jacket that has velcros - the velcros kept ruining my scarves & knit sweaters so I wanted to get a new one and declutter. I told this to my partner, to which he responded, "just use a eyebrow razor and take the velcros off." 5 minutes later, i have a jacket that I don't have to declutter & love again!

🚪 I wish I had taken photos of my first declutter right after MK book reading. Then I decluttered again just before the pandemic. Now that I’m at this chapter in my life, I’m so pleased with how few items I have - and LOVE. In the process from BC (before COVID) until now, I’ve lost 50 pounds. I didn’t buy more than 2 pair of jeans (black & blue Levi’s), and a pair of leggings and shirt from 10TenTree. I had 4 pairs of pants professionally altered. So, like you, my items out/items in is really good!! Now my full 4-season wardrobe fits into a suitcase and one carry-on. The only things that don’t fit are my 2 pair of winter boots and my long wool parka. And, it feels great!! I’m so happy with what I own. Also, even though I only have 1 “fancy” dress & pair of black high-heals, no one said that they noticed I was wearing the same outfit a several “fancy events”. I changed my hair style and fit the makeup to the season. Et voila!! A strategy that worked for me to see what I truly wear is the “backward hanger” strategy. In Jan of last year I put all of the hangers backward, then in December I checked my hangers. During the year, if I put on something that was hung backward, I would assess then if it was a keep or give. I still had a number of clothing items that I could donate after Christmas!!! Yeh!! You look great in that lovely blue sweater. Cosy. Your ideas are great. Keep up the good work. Love ya to the moon. 🌙🇨🇦😊

I declutter my wardrobe once a year. I keep an inventory. My last count was 137 total items in my wardrobe - including underwear, shoes, bags, accessories and outerwear. Excludes jewelry. Each year I decide which items need to be replaced or acquired to fill gaps. This year I bought a pair of loafers and 3 sleep shirts to replace worn out items. I’ll also replace a few tees. I take my time buying clothes. My daily wear is usually jeans or shorts with tees. I have slacks, blouses and jackets for dressier occasions. I’m retired and live in SE Texas. It’s rarely cool enough for long sleeves here. 🚪

I am almost completely done (although the key is regular maintenance and building in/up tidying habits so thing never really get out of hand again!) with our home - just need to finish up the basement and attic. It has been so freeing for me! I dotn regret anything i have let go!!! Now I am working on implementing a doable cleaning routine. A tidy, decluttered home is so much easier to actually clean! Thank you Marissa for your helpful videos and your vulnerability!

🚪Great motivational video, thanks. I had a bit of a splurge on new clothes last year after being diagnosed with a chronic illness. It’s time for me now to remove anything I’m not using.

I'm watching this as I'm about to declutter my wardrobe. I want to prefece by saying that I've been with my fiance for 5 years. This is important because when I moved out of home and in with him, I had 8+ boxes fully of clothes, shoes and accessories. On top of that I purchased tonnes of clothes especially as I was putting on weight. We've moved 6 times it wasn't till our 4th house that I decided to declutter my wardrobe because there was always too much laundry and didn't fit into/ wear most of the clothes. It was a real awakening moment for me because I'm pretty sure I donated about 10+ bags of my wardrobe. Most of the things in those bags were either brand new or barely worn a few times. Decluttering and minimalism have changed my life for the better and I haven't looked back since. In saying that there are still some spaces where I can improve more and I'm working changes. Not to mention I'm also decluttering so much mental burden as well, going through therapy for trauma etc. Things should start looking up soon. Just thought I'd share it for others who might be going through something similar. We've got this, you've got this!

🚪 Thank you for another inspiration to declutter wardrobe again. I'm glad you shared about how you embrace your weight and not to force ourselves into snug clothings. I have a pair of jeans almost 20 years ago. The cut seems to be back in fashion but as we age, body shape changed too. Time to let it go.

Love the bird skirt!! Great redo! I really appreciate your journey and seeing how you decluttered at this point. I have let go of so much but have needed clothes that fit & work better right now. I let go of 2 large bags of clothes and purchased 10 new items. Your video was so helpful as I look at what else I'm ready to move out of my closet! Thank you for sharing!🚪

I love your channel, even though I have been living very minimally for many years. I find a little trick I don't know in almost every video. Minimalist living has allowed me, a single woman and teacher, to not only pay off my mortgage this month, but to buy my very first (and likely last) brand new vehicle. 😊 It took me months (well, really all my life) to wrap my head around paying for a new car.

I’m so happy you kept the bird dress, it’s gorgeous on you. I’m falling into the buy more than I’m getting rid of. I need to reign in my spending, even if it’s from thrift stores. I would love to see your new purchases 👍☺️ I tend to fall into the trap “ It’s only a dollar.” ☹️ It’s hard to stay on the one in one out rule.

I feel this. (I LOVE thrifting!!!) But thankfully, my mindset has at least shifted enough that I can now say “It’s only a dollar … so I’ll get my dollar’s worth out of one wearing, and if I don’t feel great in it, It’ll feel great to simply donate it right back.” haha I’ve already gotten a little practice in, as a few recent purchases were just “meh.” I couldn’t believe myself! There was zero guilt about letting them go, and that is so unlike the old (a few weeks ago) me. I suggest you add a few more of your own words to that “it’s only a dollar” phrase. You might just surprise and delight yourself. 😉 I wish you the best!

I like to say that I am not...really...a minimalist; I prefer mentioning that I chose a simplicity-mindset life. (¨Simplicité volontaire¨, as we call it here, in Quebec, Canada). Anything to free my family, friends and my life from over-consumerism, from the ¨too much of too much¨ (of anything and everything!) is a joy that I have been working on for...a few years now. As you well said, it is a continuous process that it not done for ever with the last decluttering spree and I like doing what Gwen J wrote below! Way to go Ms Marissa! You are brave because you work very hard on your ideas and inner self! Thank you so much, helene ;) :))

Love the realness of the video, it's much more motivating than others. Although, thinking spark-joy is about mindless keeping of what sparks joy is the same as thinking minimalism is about mindless less.

That’s funny, because I was just thinking about how style can evolve, and my favorite things tend to be black clothes with tiny flowers or roses, in grey scale or pops of mermaid colors, but not as bold and bright as I used to be comfortable wearing. So I would love that maxi dress you’re getting rid of, lol. I also love denim/chambray because that blue is flattering with my dark grey eyes, which used to be more blue. I definitely need linen for the summer as well tho. I think taupe is a lovely color that I’m lacking in clothing. I love to wear it in the form of eyeshadow, so I’m sure it would suit me.

I went through my clothes and got rid of 20 items (honestly a fraction or the total) and took in a new pair of pants from my daughter. In the middle my youngest started doing the same with her clothes. Hers was easy - if it was too small it was give away. Mine was a little more difficult since most of my clothes I like and fit. A couple weeks ago I got rid of a few tops as well. Thanks for the motivation.

🚪 I am very minimal but I have a box of clothes I used to wear and love BC (before Covid) that I’ve stored away until “I can start living again.” These are pretty skirts and blouses that I’d wear if I actually went places! I haven’t gone back to normal life yet, but I will, and I’ll want these.

Thank you for saying that you still wear some of your maternity dresses. 💗 I have a handful of maternity dresses that I love wearing and are so comfy. I don't think they look like maternity clothes but I was starting to wonder if I should get rid of them... especially since my youngest is 3. But now I look forward to wearing them again this summer and stop being self-conscious of what the silly tag on the inside of the dress says. Thank you 💗

I've been working on being imperfectly minimalist with my clothes for a while now. It's definitely a messy path with a changing body. I want to have only things that I will wear right now, but I am keeping maternity clothes, and transition clothes and nursing clothes.
