I love Sergei’s big smile as Katia tells Scot how they met, became Closer and closer until they fell in love and decided to get married. Then Scot says it was perfect and Katia says that nothing is ever perfect but Sergei’s smile shows that for him Katia was perfect. He was crazy about her. How could he not be? Sergei told a friend he didn’t like skating. When asked why he did it he answered “ because that’s what I do” I think he skated only for Katia

They held hands from the time they were kids. He was strong and powerful and yet the most graceful man i have ever seen on the ice and together they were magical. There will never be a pair like this one. And he will never be forgotten.

Beautifully said, and I agree with what you said about Sergei. Such a unique skater. Beautiful, beautiful man.

This aired a few weeks after he died-I had the VCR all set up to record it. It seems like every song they ever skated to was part of a big cosmic love story, and this took away some of the horror of their final skate to Verdi’s Requiem. This was filmed before that happened, but it aired on TV after, so their final final skate was really “If I never knew you, if I never felt this love, I would have no inkling of how precious life can be.” Perfect. I cried when he moved away and she was reaching for him.

I was shocked to learn that Sergei died at a young age; such a talented pair of ice skaters! You can tell that Scott Hamilton was on the verge of tears as he said this last performance was dedicated to his memory. We'll never forget you, Sergei...

How strange was it that he was headed to the other side of a river, watching her skate by herself, watching over her like a spirit. That never happened before and it still gives me chills.

One man once compared Shakespeare to the couple, "It is better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all." Ekaterina embodied this statement as she overcame and loved again

They look so beautiful. I read My Sergei and i didn't know anything about him until that book. I just knew about Katia from Beauty and the Beast A Concert on Ice. It's sad what happened. I love seeing her skate and seeing them both skate. Saw her skate but never saw him skate. So, thanks to youtube, i can see them both skate.

Thank you so much for posting this. What a beautiful memory of Katia and Sergei's last performance. How ironic are the last two lines of this song: "If I'd never known you, If I'd never felt this love" G&G were the epitome of love.:)

They asked the stars to reenact their favorite fairy tales. Never a darker beauty than to have this be their last televised performance, the routine the spelled out what the next weeks would entail. That beautiful love will continue, as they said, she will continue on, even though a part of her went with him. Like Pocahontas watching her love leave on that ship, she watched her partner, her husband, go on to heaven, where he awaits her and her daughter. What a way to go Sergei, what memories you left. May we all one day feel the love you and Ekaterina felt for each other.

this is such a heartbreaking performance. on a comic note though, i remember katia saying she dreaded riding on the horse the most coz the horse might just kick her off or something, and come to think of it, there are lots of funny vids of people being kicked off their horses just out of the blue. but on actual performance, katia just smiles as if she's been riding horses all her life.

How long after this performance did he passed away? I was under the impression that his last performance was when they performed the Requiem a week before his death.
@ravenel2
@ravenel2 4 жыл бұрын
They filmed this for Disney maybe in September 1995, they skated Verdi’s Requiem maybe November 12 or thereabouts, he died November 20, and Disney hadn’t even aired this yet. So they had to air it in December 1995 with Scott explaining Sergei’s death, and the commercials leading up to it said something like, “the last television appearance of Ekaterina Gordeeva and the late Sergei Grinkov.”
