I heard this concert for the first time in 1993, played by Evgeny Kissin. I was so impressed that no other version will ever satisfy me. It made me forever a fan of both Sjostakovitsj and Kissin.

One of the best performances of this concerto ever. Everything is perfect. Colour, timbre, dynamics, everything. I love the colours that Gergiev is able to pull from the orchestra. And the soloists, simply the best. Beautiful. Thank you.

This surpasses all, including the incredible recording with Shostakovich himself playing the piano. The expansion (via dynamic clarity and expressive tempo) reveals the heart of the mystery.

This is totally awesome! When I was a young budding conductor, my chamber ensemble ended the program with a very short selection. We received a standing ovation, and I didn't know what to do.....so as I had no encore prepared, we simply repeated the last piece once again. I LOVE THIS! C'est magnifique! Merci beaucoup to Mariam Kasradze for sharing this. It is way too cool.

The tempo is such an interesting component of this performance. When it is fast, it is really fast due to Daniil's great virtuosity. This guy has virtuosity in spades. Of course, Gergiev weaves an interesting, contrasting orchestral support for his young soloist because with Gergiev: it is all about beauty, orchestral logic, and sincerity. This is one of the best performances of Shostakovich's concerto ever! Trumpet soloist fits very well into this brilliant and eloquent production with exceptional playing.

Impossible but he does it, with a particular dexterity and empathy, concentrated energy, galvanized with the confidence to meet the formidable challenge, giving brilliant touch, articulation and resonance to every note and phrase, as though born and raised to play Shostakovich, at that crux of his composing in all the beauty and crisis of conscience.

Thank you for this comment which describes beautifully the music of Shostakovich and the interpretation of Trifonov. Layers by layers the music is One between the orchestra and the soloist. Many musical finesses and intense inside [comprehension] make it unique. And of course Trifonov marvelous piano touch. .

I’m no musician of any kind but I am a listener. Shostakovich is a particular favorite. Translating his world view (more like a universal view!) into sounds using finite musical instruments. Free of pretense and full of independence. The listener emerges with a courageous outlook. (Check out his Lady Macbeth.) ⭐️

Wonderful performance. BOTH soloists are at the top of their game,. and a wonderful performance by the orchestra and Maestro Gergiev. Excellent sound and video. Brilliantly whimsical when need be, poetic when it MUST be. The 2nd movement is just mesmerizingly beautiful, and the 3rd a perfect lead in to the exciting and unpredictable 4th. There are so many choices available within the separate sections of the 4th. Those chosen by Mr Trifinov fit his style very well, and Mr Martynov is Marvelous. Wonderful sounding instrument as well. The piano's almost bell-like articulation cuts through the orchestra perfectly. This performance is worth many visits. Thanks for posting!

Completely not what Shostakovich wrote. He himself knocked this concerto off in 22 minutes and most performers respect his own intentions and do it around 23-24. 12-13 minutes slower is wilful distortion.

+Artie Solomon the Liszt 12 Transcendental Etudes as performed by him in Lyons, France, was the best I have witnessed. For some reason, it was removed from You Tube, and now all that is available is a (at times) sloppy performance) ....at TIMES... but poorly recorded. I believe it was at Carnegie Hall, it does not say, but as I watched, it looked like the house. Perhaps it was "jet lag" but he was not at his best. I am a true fan and believe he is indeed a genius. However, I become annoyed when I hear all of the non-stop coughing in between the 11th and 12th etude. Seriously, either stop smoking, or if you are sick, take some heavy duty cough suppressant if you plan to attend a live concert....or just. Stay Home! Best Wishes to you. (smiling)

To think that I heard this in 40's at a San Francisco Youth Concert with a local young pianist who was obviously good but harried. Too much for youngster of 15 to play. I don't have much memory of it. (Pianist went on to become a local performer of note.). (Wish I could remember his name.) After a lifetime of the love of classical music and a lifetime of playing the piano, this Shostakovich (movie theater pianist) concerto is a delightful tour de force that wacks you out if the performers are comfortable with this difficult work. It is "off to the races" and Shostakovich made history with his unusual concerto. (I am surprised Stalin let this happen!)

My Dad and I really liked Dimitri's Piano Concerto #1 especially I as a high school cornet player. We were amused by his Western movie cavalry (trumpet) and saloon music ending (starting at about 23:20) I don't know why critics that i am aware of have not picked up on that obvious theme. As a very young TV viewer in the early fifties I saw a few silent movie Westerns with piano background. Later on I learned that Dimitri had played a piano for a movie theater as an adolescent and realized that the music I had heard in the old silent movies as a kid was exactly like the Concerto ending complete with a kind of sweep across the keyboard signifying the heros leaping onto their horses. Dimitri was reliving that experience...The tempo for that section, though, is way too fast, especially the "saloon" part...

Premiered by Shostakovich at the piano in 1933. The composer was a fine pianist with a good reputation. This composition seems to have been ignored by the Soviet thought controllers at the time, but Shostakovich would soon come under the criticism of the Party. The sweat coming off the Trifonov face tells you a lot about this composition. It is difficult to play both for piano and trumpet. The work has become very popular around the World, but some pianists do not want to learn such a "workhorse". Great fun!
