I do mine almost the same. I put an office staple on both tires. I measure across in the front, then roll the vehicle forward or backward to measure the staple on the other side. Rear wheel drive cars are towed in 1/16" and front drive cars are 0 tow or slightly towed out.

Yup, towed in is what I found out. I forget that every time I have to align a vehicle. This really isn't going to get the alignment perfect so as straight as you can get it will work. We got some snow, and it froze on the roads, so I haven't been able to drive this much. I still have part of the frame to paint so I can't run it on the salted roads.

Dealer sucked my sil into alignment on a year old colorado. At shop entrance they have a device you drive through that supposedly checks alignment. Wheeare even steering straight necessarily when you drive through. He did require one later also but that was because it missed driveway and jammed wheel. I think it was that time when he left shop and returned immediately because alignment was clearly worse.

Maybe use digital caliper for string distance

Actually you just did toe part of the alignment, no caster or camber.

I took pictures of the cam bolts on the upper control arms and put them back the way they were. That should be pretty close. You can put a level on your tires to check that. This isn't an official alignment. That's why I call it a redneck alignment.
