NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode we set off on the Leeds & Liverpool canal from the top of the Bingley Five Rise locks. We gird our loins for various swing bridges that we know we're going to have to tackle. unfortunately at one of them we encounter an annoyed pedestrian who seems to be running rather late for her train. the scenery along the way gets better and better as the day continues culminating in one of the most picturesque mooring spots we've ever had - although it does necessitate getting the gangplank out for the first time. just before we get to our meeting spot though a subscriber comes boring out of his boat unexpectedly and shows us around his latest project which we film for a bonus video for you.
JOURNEY - BINGLEY FIVE RISE LOCKS to MICKLETHWAITE to RIDDLESDEN to KEIGHLEY
CANALS - LEEDS AND LIVERPOOL CANAL
We hope you'll SUBSCRIBE and support the channel and join us on our big adventure as we learn laugh and cry our way around the UK canal network. If you've ever wondered what life on the canals is like told without scripting or acting then we're sure you'll love what we video. It's authentic. It's real. It's told how it is with a bit of banter and occasional silliness thrown in for free!
We'll be sure to post new videos every week and look forward to taking you on our journey. See you on the next one!

You were quite correct, once the sequence has been started you can't stop, that's why you have to keep your finger on the button on swing bridges, and dont forget the canals were there before the roads in most cases.

It is nice when people appreciate our Yorkshire countryside. Just don't tell people so often how nice it is. We have been telling folk it's grim up north. All pit stacks, flat 'ats n whippets. Hoping it puts them off coming and overcrowding the place. Sue is so lovely. 🎉

The paddle things on the big barge are called "Lee boards". They are used like a centre board or keel on a yacht . To stop your vessel being pushed down wind whilst sailing. Hope that helps.😊

The paddle thingys on each side of the Dutch barge act as a kyell and are dropper down so they're vertical when they travel cross the sea. In theory you could do the same with your barge then trave to France or Holland without capsizing 😎😎😎

Sue please don't her or others like her get to you. I always give myself a 20 minute leave way when I have to be on time. More if needed. Her lack of planning is not yours anyones else's fault. I used to live near that final swing bridge (Booth's by Keighley Golf Course) and would hang around it as a kid, watching the boats. Would always offer to help out, even though I would only have been about 12, and the offer to push was pretty much always accepted! Never asked for owt, but would often get a little tip 😊

Truth about the "Paddle things" they are for when the barge is under sail and those are used in place of a keel. a keel would be too deep for the shallows of the rivers and estuaries so these can be lowered and raised to adjust for the depth of water beneath the barge.

Hi Those paddle thinks you referred to are called Starr Boards and they are dropped vertically into the water to act as Keels to prevent side ways movement in high winds. That is also where the word Starboard comes from. They were used on the old Thames Sailing Barges. The word Port comes from mooring with the other side to the Port (Key side) where there is no Starr Board fitted. Hope that helps. I watch all your Vlogs they are great, thanks.
@ramseybarber8312
@ramseybarber8312 Жыл бұрын
Hi A correction here my friend ,The side boards are called LEE BOARDS not starr boards , five hundred years ago vessels had there steering board on the side and not like today's on the stern and that is where the word starboard comes from .Ships could only moor on the port side otherwise the steering board could get damaged ,normally you would only drop one leeboard on the leeward side or down wind side of the boat when sailing. Cheers
@janfluitsma8274
@janfluitsma8274 Жыл бұрын
It is an old Dutch sailing barge. In Dutch it is called ‘zwaard’ (sword), it has one on both sides. The leeward one is lowered, not to steer the ship but limit the drift and thus allow to sail higher into the wind. I can imagine that older smaller ships had only one that could be used on either side. Not on this barge, they are way to heavy.

Hi guys, those paddle things are wings, like Chitti Chitti Bang Bang. As you approach a lock they flip out and you fly over the top...simples. 🤣. I did a search on Google for deep square plates, rather than powls, and loads come up...have a look. Sue's toughening up on the bridge thing, and right too, that lady was cutting it too fine or just being obstropulous (great word - had to check the spelling 😂).

The large wooden things on the the old converted sailing barge (looking like flattened eggs). They are leeboards and are used in place of a keel when sailing to prevent the boat simple being carried sidewards. Called leeboards because only the one on the leeward side is lowered into the water. On tacking they lower the other one and raise the one on the windward side. You will find them on a lot of sailing barges and even some older sailing boats that were not barges but did not want to lose space inside the boat with a lifting keel but when still needing to be able to lift to enter shallow waters. Loved the bit about cattle and their 'lady parts', but I've never encountered cows that will attack out of spite. As for how the cow identifies - maybe as a sheep even? (I understand there is a girl identifying as a cat in UK now.)
@NarrowEscape1
@NarrowEscape1 Жыл бұрын
Wow - thanks for that detailed reply. It’s fabulous when we see things that we have zero idea about and can ask watchers and subscribers what they are, because people know stuff, much stuff, that we don’t, so thank you for sharing 👍 The cow thing was just completely random. We turned the camera on, chatted and this sort of stuff just comes out. I (Elliott typing) maintain that cows are not aggressive creatures and wouldn’t just attack you. If you watch the latest video out today we get up close and personal with some more mooers and they were really sweet and inquisitive. Don’t get us started on the whole ‘I identify as’ thing 🤬🤬🤬

ABrilliant video...Thank you. The scenery on this canal is stunning,,,, I always think of the North as dark satanic mills, shin kickers and collieries...However, far from it. Very different to my manor, but stunning all the same,,,,As an aside, before coming to Japan, I lived in Pembrokeshire. Thanks Ian - I think the videos we’ve done on this stretch have challenged a good few people’s initial impression of what it’s like ‘Oop North, and Yorkshire in particular. We’ll be doing a tour very soon if Skipton so see what you think of that too 😎 Pembrokeshire is somewhere that is on our list of places to visit when the time is right. I was a Bristol lad by birth but never (knowingly) made it across to the south of Wales- only ever the north. 5-6 deaths - I wonder how that compares to stationary deaths (paper cuts can be vicious) or people sticking body parts into vacuum cleaners and bleeding to death? 🤣🤣 Thanks for the message Ian 👍😎 E & S

Hello Elliott and Sue. I hate swing bridges😅 Had a single handed boater open the foot swing Bridge at Brinklow and I felt we put him out a bit as said he can't get back on his boat if we come through too. We squeezed in the gap behind his boat and the swing Bridge got shut behind us not sure why he panicked lol. Then we proceed to overtake him and he was a bit annoyed I think but I done it for you guys as you said make sure we pass a boat 😅😅😅😅 Did you ask if her name was Karen 😅 I bet she had loads time and wasn't really catching a train😮 was the train station close by?😂 Strange boat doubt it's piano made but I bet he gets a good tune out of it eh😅😅😅😅 Ok the guy who jumped out his boat to show you his diy skills did you really say he has a 6 litre engine and it was a tug boat holy crap that's a sleeper canal boat power to drag race on the water.. Lovely homes on the water edge you passed just love to live that close I'd have a nice garden too unlike the chalk n cheese you passed.😅😅😅 Anyway all the very best have fun and stay safe ❤️ Kev the Brinklow kayaker😊

She was indeed but people in that position seem to have no issue in ignoring their own planning shortcomings and making you feel like you shouldn’t be there. Time and time again I have encouraged Sue to drive through the bridges and then will operate the bridge. Even though it is 2023 I think the bridge operator might get a very different response in that case? Either way the boater’s response won’t be one of pure guilt. Work in progress but we are making some headway shall we say….? Thanks for the comment. Elliott & Sue
