Fantastic work! So detailed and carefully planned. This is by far the best series of videos I have seen on this job in KZbin. I wish you would make one for replacing the front Timing cover.

Great videos. Good lighting, Good use of a tripod. Good visuals and good explanation of what you are doing. No annoying or overpowering background music. No unnecessary "rambling on" with unrelated dialogue. Straight to the point and informative. Thank you for posting.

How's the truck running? Your videos are still helping many people even today! I'm about to tackle this job soon although i may have to pull the heads since i actually got coolant in my oil unfortunately. Alot of people told me that these gaskets can also cause that type of internal leak and well as an external leak. Im really hoping that this is my issue because I really dont want to mess with the heads simce im not THAT experienced. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this series. Extremely helpful!

Great Videos!!! I have a 99 GMC Jimmy and replaced the intake manifold gasket the day before heading out all the way to Arizona. Well at about mid Texas, the rear of the manifold started leaking just a tiny bit of oil, It still got me to Arizona without issue, but I knew I'd have to replace it again. So I'll be doing it next week again, with a lot of helpful hints from your videos. Thanks a lot man!!!

mossman381 I know it’s been along time ago but did you use rtv on the bolts or did you use locktight.
@RedDawg2k5 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfair9751 He put the sealant that came with the kit, look for the tube in an earlier video.
@jamesfair97515 жыл бұрын
Spreadsheet User yeah the rtv that comes with the gasket kit is used for sealant. I just ordered new intake bolts that come with sealant already on them. That way they are new and not stretched so proper torque can be achieved and I didn’t have to worry about what sealant to use. It says recommended to get new bolts anyways.
@RedDawg2k5 жыл бұрын
Janes Fair , very cool and thx for the comment. I already ordered new bolts before reading your reply for the same reason you mentioned. If they come pre-coated, all the better!

hey thanks for the great video I just finished mine I looked at a different bid but having some trouble getting it started. after looking at your bids 1-5 looks like I followed mist if the same thing. I have spark but no combustion.I did have to stick a screw driver in the distributor hole to aline the flat head like cavity to my distributor.I did mark it and installed it in the same markings. I pressed the gas nozzle and I have also gas up to the nozzle before the spider. can you give me any ideas????
@mossman3819 жыл бұрын
+REKAIRBRUSH If I had to guess your distributor is not where it was before or your plug wires are wrong.
@Rekairbrush9 жыл бұрын
+mossman381 what I did was mark the distributer top circle in 2 places.I knew the bottom screw is fixed so didnt worry about it. then once it came time to reinstall I had a hard time lining up my markings and after some research found that theres a flat piece at the end of the distributer that also needs to line up in order to sit flush.so I turned the piece inside where the distributer goes so it lines up and then finally once my gear grooves lined up it twisted all the way nice and flush and my marks all matched up. so I don't think that could be but I'm gonna check. quick question if my cables are wrong or its incorrectly installed wouldn't it still turn on a bit and just not run right? right now it sounds like its out if gas just the started moving the engine. I checked and I get spark at the cables.but can't check for gas at the spider inside.
@mossman3819 жыл бұрын
+REKAIRBRUSH Without me actually working on it and seeing what happened I can only guess. If the truck was running fine before you did this job I wouldn't think it would be a fuel issue. Also you shouldn't have had to move anything for the distributor to drop back in place were it was when you took it out. That kind of tells me that is probably the problem. You might be one gear off. You could try turning the distributor a little one way and see if it fires or wants to fire. If that don't work try turning it the other way some. If you can check your fuel pressure that might be a good idea. Fully charged battery turning it over?
@Rekairbrush9 жыл бұрын
+mossman381 that's what I though but my marks line up exact but would sit flush till I move slightly that flat like piece inside they says its the oil pump.it was running perfect before. here the vid I watched kzbin.info/www/bejne/goC1XmyAj7qIf5I that said to turn that small piece .I really appreciate you answering back as I'm a bit lost. I'm going to recheck it in the morning and check all my wires and connectors 👍👍

I been using your videos to replace my intake on my 99 blazer. They've been very informative. But i been told that the distributor must be prepostioned on the little indicators on the distributor housing and noticed that isnt in your videos. Did you have any issues after the repair? I dont know how to line up the distributor and i dont want to fail on this repair since im this far in now. Thank you
@mossman3815 жыл бұрын
You put it back exactly the way you took it out unless you turned the motor over. Follow the marks you made when you took it out. I had no issues with any of this repair.

Mossman381: First, thank you for these great videos, I'll be tackling this project in a week or so. I have what may be a dumb question though - would the valve cover gasket replacement go easier if I did them with the intake manifold still out? I get that you did it last to keep from dropping any gunk into the engine, but wonder if I leave the rags & covers in if having easier access would be worth the risk?
@mossman3819 жыл бұрын
+Tim Karges You can change out the valve cover gaskets with the intake off. Not sure if that will help or not but just cover up the engine really good so nothing falls in. That would be really bad :)

Nice videos.Gonna replace my s10 intake gaskets and everything else u did this weekend and Ive watched a bunch of videos and yours are the best! For the manifold bolts I notice that in my Haynes manual it says for the in lb. torque to do 26, 106, 132 and you said the gasket kit says 50, 100,132. I should probably do what the gasket kit says right? Considering the manual is assuming Im installing the cheap failure-prone OEM gasket and not the nice Fel-Pro one?

When you applied oil to the seal on the spider, did you use silicon? Regardless, I don't think a little petroleum based oil will hurt anything.

Hey Mossman I was curious I seen that you had replaced the gaskets on the valve covers would you recommend going the extra step and removing the whole assembly and go ahead and replace the head gaskets directly below? What are you thoughts about it?

Taking the heads off is a whole other video in itself. I don't think head gaskets are a problem with these engines. Unless you let them overheat badly. Unless you think you have a problem then I wouldn't mess with them.

Why didn't you use new bolts? Did you use a tap on the bolt holes to get them clean? Chiltons says you should use rtv sealant around the coolant passage holes for the new gaskets. Is there a reason you did not? Thanks.
@mossman3818 жыл бұрын
I didn't have new bolts. You really shouldn't use a tap to clean out the bolt holes. You need a thread chaser. A tap is for cutting threads not cleaning and you can damage your threads with a tap. I didn't have a thread chaser so I didn't clean them out. The gaskets I bought are updated ones that don't require any rtv. This truck is still running with no coolant leaks.
@talewish8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the reply! After seeing your video and some research I realized this updated gasket set is the one sold only with the valve cover gaskets in a set. Now I know why it is more expensive. Worth it though I'm sure.

Getting ready to start in on my 99 Astro. Seems like putting in a new water pump sped up the failure of these gaskets. More detailed info on how to bleed the coolant might have been nice. Thanks Mossman!
@mossman3818 жыл бұрын
I was doing the water pump at the same time as these gaskets. Just pull the lower radiator hose and have a big pan to catch all the fluid is the easiest way.
