Phil Perry: The Patriots Offensive Line is EMERGENCY LEVEL Bad

On Friday's edition of Zolak and Bertrand, Phil Perry who covers the Patriots for NBC Sports Boston, joined the show. The guys reacted to the Patriots 24-3 defeat at the hands of the NY Jets, and Perry made the point that the state of the Patriots O-line is "emergency level bad".

They need to put the lineman back where they belong. Wallace at RT, Ownenu at RG, Andrews at C, Robinson at LG, and then throw two bodies to act as LT. You'll get better play when your players are doing what they're comfortable with. Playing with 6 lineman might be necessary at this point

Anyone who couldn't see this coming, either this week or next, was VERY naive. This was INEVITABLE. Cincy was more responsible for LOSING the first game than the Patriots were for winning it. The Pats needed EVERYTHING to break their way in that game to score a measly 16 points and win by 6. One or two mistakes in game 2 and they lost. This game? NOTHING went right and they lost by 3 scores and it could have/should have, been worse.

His last few years. Heck, since Scar first retired. Yeah he came back and it got better (and the Pats had a record combination of offensive linemen the year before he came back and still went to the AFC Championship game with a chance to go to Super Bowl 50) and he was able to stabilize it a little, but they have been looking for a good LT since Solder/Volmer. They’ve had guys plug in and do ok for the year, then hit FA or get injured the next, but they haven’t had a solid and dependable LT in a very, very long time. Really since Light, cause Solder and Volmer both had their injury histories as well.

You can tell that Maye moves well, has great pocket awareness and anticipates with his receivers better than Brissett. I get it that the offensive line isn't that good but they used to blame the line back in the Bledsoe days. Maybe the QB holds the ball too long, doesn't anticipate the blitz and doesn't run enough when it's necessary. Defenses are gonna load up and attack when you are a baby lamb of an offense. The QB has to shoulder more responsibility. Spread it out! Throw a few deep balls to back the defense off. When Tommy was QB we used the passing game to set up the run. Maybe the Oline is not motivated because of Brissetts ability or lack thereof. Maye is gonna make everything better. The Pats made their own bed. You got Brissett and 2 rookies. Brissett has never been a winner. He's emotionless. Maye is gonna lift this team and management will want to build around him. We are close. Let's not waste this season!!!!!

You spread defenses out five wide, and use a ton of motion. Then defenses can not stack the box. By doing this you force the defense to play smaller. If you want to run you have to big tight ends and the 12 personal package seems to work more times than not. Play action off of that

Wolf and company should have seen this coming. Best tackle draft class in years and they didnt get one. Could have made a move to get one like K.C. but didn't... Could have gotten Miami's 2nd rounder Patrick Paul but took Polk instead. This organization has not avidly tried to build the OL in YEARS. Stop with that narrative. TWO draft picks at the tackle position in the last 5 drafts. Wallace (rd 3) and Cajuste (rd 6). Isaiah Wynn was a first round pick at tackle during the last year of Brady in NE. Trent Brown was the last homerun they hit when they first drafted him. His second stint was terrible. Shaq Mason was traded and replaced by Cole Strange (waste of a first round pick). This offensive line has not been good in SIX years. It was awful for the last 2 years. Now, it is the single worst display of pass protection in football. This is an organization that moved a guard to tackle. This organization drafted a college DT to be a guard (Mafi). Then, tried him at Center. Now, he is gone. The ONLY lineman that is good on this team during the last decade is David Andrews, and he is long in the tooth. It's gonna take years to draft new starters and DEPTH to this OL. Maye's rookie contract will be done by the time this OL becomes a strength of this team. Shambles.

A couple of errors to point out. Trent Brown was not drafted by the Pats, they traded with the 49ers for him. Cole Strange wasn't drafted to replace Shaq Mason who was a RG, but to replace Ted Karras who Bill didn't resign. Karras came back in 2021 and replaced Joe Thuney at LG. To think about it and really piss the fans off, Ted Karras is way better than any O-lineman right now in that line-up with the exception of Andrews.

To make a quick fix on this disastrous O-line, move Wallace to his natural RT position and shift Onwenu back to RG. If Robinson can be moved to LG and can handle it while Sow is out, you should see some improvement. LT? There got to be some back up on some roster who can play better than the stiffs currently out there. Make a trade even giving up a 4th rounder if need be since they blow most of their picks anyway.
