They should really use a 5-20P plug on machines like this to let people know that it's not okay to plug a 20A load into a 13-15A extension cord. This is how you use a welder to weld a plug into an outlet.

few tips for HF wire welder. remove your welding wire spool and put some wheel bearing grease on all the moving parts that touch and rotate. keep your 4 1/2 hand grinder nearby and grind off the rust in a spot for a good ground. grind the rust off where your weld is going on both parts.i bought one of the 90 amp ones at a garage sale that was used maybe for one weld if that. when i got it home the wire would come out in little spurts. i removed the plastic wire spool and greased the parts and my son has a wire welder he has used for all kinds of stuff. remember lubricate the spool assembly but be careful not get grease on your wire. quit using the E71T-GS wire and start using E71T-11wire. once you switch wire you get much better welds.

Tim Sexton yup. I put mine to good use all the time. Its just messy. Home depot sells a welder that's half the size, but it's $169 so it's almost double the price. It is however much easier to use and is less messy. Its a DC voltage welder, not an AC one. The current switching back and forth is what makes the harbor freight one so messy. In my datsun, room is scarce, so I choose to have the century fc-90 with me. But if I didn't own that, I wouldn't hesitate to grab the little 99 dollar welder with me on my travels.

Years ago when I worked at the mine I used to do some decent welding, so a year ago I bought a 250a arc welder. It is really good welder but all I have been able to do with it is welding that looks like what my boss used to call chiken shit. I have gotten lucky and fixed a few things but more often than not my welds suck. This demonstration makes me inclined to think I should sell that bigger welder and get one of these. Thank you for the demonstration. I learned a lot!!

I bought the $200 Chicago electric 220v mig welder from harbor freight. It's on the bottle. I've used it for years with no hangups at all. Welds a ton cleaner than my Lincoln. The only hangup was the weak ground clamp. I switched that to a magnet ground and loved it ever since. Just my 2 cents.

@isellcatlitter
@isellcatlitter 7 жыл бұрын
but with flux core... you can use the same gas as mig.... it is called dual shielded welding and this technique is for .035 flux core (but .030 can be used) to penetrate very thick metal with minimal inclusions in your welds... flux core wire works the best outside under windy conditions (much like a stick metal arc welding...smaw) and the extra gas shielding prevents any additional oxidation to a weld as it cools. mig (metal inert gas: mig) is for inside use or no wind conditions... so if you are a farmer get an arc (stick metal arc welders...smaw, or a flux core wire : flux core metal arc welder... fcmaw) ... tig works the best inside a building on any weldable metal, not so much outside.. again the gas blows away in the wind.

I strongly recommend the 170 amp model. It's around $180 and not only works decent with flux wire but can actually weld using a gas bottle and better wire when you learn. I do not recommend this welder. Also... it cannot weld aluminum. Aluminum takes special equipment so you can weld it but you'll spend a lot of money... like I said, the 170 amp model... or the cheapest of the little green welders they sell will be a much better welder.

Can't beet the price. 120 volt you can put a big spool on there as well you got to cut away the frame though. Good to see someone who's not inpatient and can actually use the little welder. Good to have. 100' extension cord and you can go anywhere. Preheat the heavy stuff and it just might stick. All good thanks for sharing your time experiences and videos with us looking forward to seeing more.

Many thanks for taking the time to review and post. After seeing your post, I bought the 125A this last weekend for a small exhaust repair. The machine was 99.99 with coupon. The exhaust shop is $65 for the repair (it's a recurring problem at the muffler seam and the issue always happens at the worst possible PITA time). $99.99 is a no-brainer and the machine almost paid for itself the first time I used it. It's OEM pipe, so it's only like 16 ga. With the welder on low and a feed rate of 8, it acted like it wanted to burn through, so I made small tacks until I went all the way around the pipe. Worked great! thanks again, man.
@InvincibleExtremes
@InvincibleExtremes 7 жыл бұрын
skkfor yeah, low is 60 amps. That's the only real downside to this welder besides being A.C. current and messy as a result. The home depot century fc90 is 169 bucks and a MUCH better welder because it's DC ., and can go all the way down to 30 amps for sheet metal. But then again, it's almost twice the price. I've used both welders with decent results. And like you said, 65 or 99... it's a no brainer.

I bought mine for 85 bucks about 12 years ago. The ground clamp is a weak link on mine thus i use the brass clamp hf sells. About 15 to 20 years ago the model had diodes so the output is dc ie direct current. Hf dropped the diodes so the units are less than 100 bucks. Adding some diodes will make a slightly better weld. The 240 volt hf wire welders have dc ie diodes. The 240 volt models have 4 ranges for current. The 120 models have 2 ranges. Eons ago the hf 240volt wire welders often had way lower max amps. I have a 240v hf wire welders that is 115 amps.

HF's cheap welders aren't bad. I bought my blue Chicago Electric $100 Harbor Freight welder 7.5 years ago as of this comment, (my first ever) yet I've been welding together another grill (out of an old gas water heater tank) off and on the past two weeks. To be fair, the rubber around the connection at the hose to welder joint is tearing and starting to come apart from wear, and I seem to go through copper tips faster than when it was new. Interestingly, I have OFTEN run the machine to the point of auto shut off lol. When running it long periods, do often keep a large high power fan pointed at it, which keeps it's temp down and buys me a lot more weld time, but I honestly, I can hardly believe it still works all this time later considering the abuse my amateur efforts have put it through over the years. 10/10 would buy it again ...... if I didn't want gas on my next one. It is not gas capable, pure flux core only.

Jeremy Hutchins they are junk, but they do work. Especially the 170 amp model. It's DC output and is a lot cleaner. That's why I love my century fc90 inverter welder so much. It's a tiny 15 lbs DC output wire feed and was only 169 bucks. I have done a lot of in call rust repair with it, and use it on my own projects as well. A miller is a great machine, but it can also be a giant waste of money for someone not needing a welder full time. Not to mention a huge liability and heavy and unmanageable in my situation.

It's a cheap welder that will likely be used by beginners on junk metal using a junk cord.... if you're too dumb to see how this kind of review is exactly what they need to see, then there's not much that you're going to understand.

go to weldingtipsandtricks, and weld.com.... chucke2009 does ok but..... actually go to really good welding videos... clean all of the rust and mill scale off of your projects and get a good clean ground and you will have WAY better success... a decent cheap welder but not a welder that can be used in a commercial way.

these guys will make you a professional welder with all of the how to's so you can take a test in any position even upside down ( they dont cover how to weld underwater, but who wants to deal with delta-p) and get your welds so even an x-ray can prove your success. there is money to be made in welding if you dont mind catching yourself on fire every day.
