Japan's last remote frontier is East Hokkaido is where less than 0.1% of tourists will ever visit. It's between Kushiro and Nemuro north to Rausu and Shiretoko National Park. Basically zero international tourists come - but we did! So - what's out here? Wild animals, amazing scenery, onsen hot springs, sea and mountains, friendly people who have never seen foreign tourists before! Oh, and the food is amazing!
With a Japanese RV Camper - the Robinson 106 - we set out for the great unknown. Join @PetervonGommJAPAN and I on a road trip adventure sho winging off Hokkaido's most spectacular places you'll want to visit!
Where'd we stop?
Obihiro - Nemuro - Cape Nosappu, Japan's Easternmost Point - Rausu - Shiretoko National Park - Teshikaga - Lake Mashu & Lake Akan - Ainu Kotan - Ashoro - Aoike Blue Pond, Biei - Furano Lavender - Yubari Melon Town and back to New Chitose Airport for the flight back to Tokyo.

Thank you John and Peter for sharing this brilliant adventure, I absolutely loved this 2 part series. There is so much beauty in this part of the world that I one day hope to see for myself in person. I remember your winter livestream from Lake Akan 3 years ago and it was great to see it in a different season. There are so many highlights that you packed into this video but a particular one for me was seeing your return meeting with Melon Kuma, looks like you have a friend for life in him John. Excellent work gentleman, excellent. Best wishes to you both and your families.

When we took trip to Eastern Hokkaido from late July to early August, it was 35℃ in Tokyo and 16℃ in Kushiro in daytime, it even got lower like 10℃ at night. We thought Hokkaido is cooler than Tokyo, but never imagined that cold‼️ It was around 25℃ in Sapporo, so we only took summer clothes but we had to buy jackets in Kushiro. The hotel we stayed used heater at night and a/c was not necessary at all. If you’d like to escape from hot, humid summer in other parts of Japan, this is the place to go❗️😄

The amount of effort just to get a simple overhead shot by a drone, or even the beginning shot of leaving the starting point (and you need to retrieve the camera), wow it's incredible. Japan is definitely on my bucket list, I really want to go there for the views, the food, the travel experience by train as well. It's soo cozy and wonderful watching this.

I hope to take my family to that route (Hokkaido) for tour one day in future.

Great video , it’s funny I was thinking about why no one goes to Hokkaido a few days ago, and then these videos pop up on my feed. I think people stay on the golden route because it’s easier to manage as being foreigners in Japan and not knowing the language. Not to mention lots of places require car to get to, and we foreigners can’t exactly read Japanese road signs off the plane. Haha.
@onlyinjapan
@onlyinjapan 10 ай бұрын
I understand why the Golden Route is so popular, there’s a lot of culture and sights and as humans, we want to share and imitate. But I do hope people venture off the trail at least once or in their second visit. Places like Hokkaido are so worth it, esp in summer when Kyoto is like a sauna, hot and humid. It’s amazing up north!
