As a new designer who has worked as a freelance resume writer for Indeed and VelvetJobs over the past year and a half while transitioning careers, I’ve found that the multi-column format that many designers use affects parsing with the applicant tracking systems. I recommend a simple, one-column format for this reason, unless you’re sending it directly to a human.

If we have different versions of our resume for different companies, then what version should we link to in our portfolio/linkedin? I've always wondered this. Wouldn't the recruiters just see two different resumes then?

Thanks for another great tip. I have one question. so I have experience in many fields because I did not start as a designer when I was 18 I decide to do it in my 30s. I worked in electrical, as an IT engineer, cook, and a lot of other things, but it was not just a job I'm quite good in all of it. Graphic Design and web designs were my hobbies and passive income for many years and because I never look at it as my main profession, I never had a portfolio and sadly I don't have much of my work to showcase. Mostly it was some websites for small companies and flyers, business cards, catalogs and etc. so my question is should I mention this information in my CV? like previous jobs? even if they are not related to UX. I think one thing I'm really good at is learning stuff quickly and working in different environments with different people easily and my experience of years working in different fields and companies can help me in a UX job. should I mention all of this? and one more question I have if it ok. While I'm studying UX I'm doing Websites on Wix as a job. I already have like 10 completed projects. should I mention it in my resume and portfolio? again thanks for the great content. you rock.🤘

Mention all your skills and all your real work - definitely, but try not to put too much in your resume unless you're looking for a more senior role - too much experience can also be a bad thing as some companies may think you're expecting more money and pass up on you because of that. It's a balance of course - but real world experience is always good to have :)

Great tips. Keep it simple, clean layout, printable and readable. In the US, having a picture on the Resume is a bad practice. I don't know the full history behind it. What I've heard is that recruiters (and companies) often judge you because of the way you look and can dismiss your application in a second. To avoid this situation is a good practice not to include it.
@MalewiczHype
@MalewiczHype 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, in some countries this is a big no, while in others it's frowned upon when it's not there. I will cover this in more detail in part 2 as I believe photo is a part of the content (i.e. what to put in the resume) so here I only talked about it in context of the color / visual aspects.

Some tutorials highly encourage sticking with a one-column layout so the resume will pass an automated scanning app. Any thoughts on this?
@KnaughtyKnancy
@KnaughtyKnancy 2 жыл бұрын
I found that the field you’re applying to this will make a huge difference. In fields with older businesses, you’ll want one column. In tech, typically they have “newer” things. Newer ATS scanners can read multiple columns. If you apply to academia, keep it single. Tech, you’re probably fine.
@MalewiczHype

@@MalewiczHype Hi Michal, just wanted to let you know that it can be mandatory in some places. In France for example, I've always been taught since I was young that recruiters won't read a 2-pages resume if it's not an expert/senior job. And even in those cases, they might want a 1-page resume too, because it's really the standard in the country :)

I really like your videos but I'm not so sure about the part of photography in a resume. In some countries, added photo is considered a bad thing - mostly because people use stereotypes printed in them like preferring prettier people to less attractive or colorism. I'd love to add colors to my resume - is a logo a good option?
@MalewiczHype
@MalewiczHype 2 жыл бұрын
True - this is why I moved the part on content (including the photo) to part 2 and I plan to mention a DYOR part regarding photo - my resume never had one. Sometimes however it does make sense - I'll talk about this more in that next video, but first I'm talking to some resume content experts and getting their views on it as well to have variety of opinions :) As for colors - when done right they can work, and a logo can also be a good idea but make sure it's not replacing your name as some people use a fancy handwritten font for their name that is unreadable and it adds friction. Some add doodles (if it's a UI/illustrator job for example) between sections and that kind of decoration can work too (I will cover it as "content" in the upcoming vid). Thanks for the comment! :)
