Many, many years ago I found your youtube channel and rediscover the fun for trying to improve my tennis game. Great work!

Improve your backhand approach win percentage by hitting a forehand approach. Genius.

Good info, could you comment if this applies for lefties, which would be hitting to a righty’s forehand? I would think you are better off hitting the old way instead….

I'm lefty, I still approach cc at the backhand. It's actually more of an advantage in the sense we don't have to run around our backhand, so theoretically we should have more opportunities to take advantage of the 76% win rate.

Folks may point to the exceptions, but the stats don't lie. I am officially adopting this tactic. Thanks FYB n Craig!

I got the news rules a while back. It's full of surprises and great points that will indeed work for all players. Thank you Will and Craig. M

First when you approach the net down the line you dont cover down the line (because its actually the hardest shot to hit for a pass). Its also interesting that your strategy does not go beyond forehand or backhand approach but also dept and spin could also make a big factor when going to the net..

Typically I like to hit my approach hard and deep in the middle. Doesn’t allow much angle from opponents and lets me play an easy volley.

That ball better be short or your approach shot better be deep to have the extra half second to get into net position.

If the other guy gets to your approach late they can’t hit cross court, only down line toward middle of the court.

what if the ball is so wide and short that you cant hit a forehand?
@lenwelch21957 сағат бұрын
Unless your opponent is Chris Evert that had best backhand crosser ever. Lol

Now after watching video, if everyone goes behind the back in first volley, then that is something your opponent will be expecting and will be prepared for that instead of going to open court, won't they? :)

Are analytics from top players good information for recreational players? Most people can barely hit decent approach shots, let alone be fast enough to recognize and run around a BH approach. This looks like foolish advice.

This is correct. I forget which popular KZbin coach said this but I agree: ATP points are based on world-class athleticism and they can get away with lower percentage shots more often. WTA points are played with more traditional tactics and are a good model for recreational level players.

In the clips from that Wimbledon match, however, Novak hits a down the line backhand approach shot to win the point.
