It is correct to say that LFf and CM are effectively the same thing but at the time of filming we were in a transitional period from 'rank' to 'role'. This is a move to redefine the management structure and 'soften' the militarised image and terminilology of the Fire Service. 'Commanders' & 'officers' became 'managers' but at the time (2005) the titles of Leading Fireifighter and Sub Officer were still used as part of the operational command structure.

So in basics Chief = Station Commander the officer who is in charge of the station. Captain = Sub Officer/ Crew commander he assists the station commander on incident scenes. Lieutenant = Leading FF who is a normal firefighter but should the station commander be unavailable for an emergency the Sub officer/crew commander will act as station commander and the leading firefighter will act as the sub officer
