small correction to the video boost section: -you *can* in fact record without HDR enabled, but still only in 30/60fps through the main lens or tele (no ultra wide) -And apparently I didn't wait long enough for my boosted video to come back at 3:25... which is strange because I shot these clips well before I transferred them off device. But Google tells me that while the videos on the left are RAW and unedited, the videos on the right are not fully processed. Which, to me, speaks to how relying on footage to be processed off device should not be the answer to improving video quality on device, especially if someone who is versed in tech is misunderstanding the process.

@ 4:45, I agree that software has improved, but the panorama isn't a direct replacement to what they currently have compared to the 8 Pro. Fully 360° panoramas on the new panorama mode do not actually render the full circle. The starting and ending position photos are omitted, which renders the full 360° panorama kinda useless. I also don't like how they removed the metadata which allowed users to view panoramas as a photosphere in Google Photos too.

THANK YOU. The biggest thing I hate about computational photography is the artificial brightening of the shadows to make everything look lit up. That is UNREALISTIC ASF. Shadows should be dark, bright areas should be bright. Simple as. Highly appreciate you pointing this out on the video.

DUDE. Flipping love this. A few highlights… 1) Thank you for the button clicking. Genuinely helps give a sense of the quality hardware upgrade. 2) Thank you for focusing so much on video!! All the photography stuff is fantastic, but video is so sticking important both in the world now and also my job. Also… Would love a more explicit test of the video audio capture! I’ve noticed recently just how good the iPhone pros audio is in video in tough situations. Would love more night sight testing. I always felt like the pixels scored higher than the iPhone in low light, but that Google‘s processing of night photos usually felt over exposed and less… night-ish. Lastly, I’d be curious to see if there’s much of a difference between the 9 Pro and the Fold camera system!

I appreciate reviews like this one, because at this point all I care about when I upgrade phones is the camera. I love that your review focused on that! What I keep hoping is that someday a phone manufacturer will bite the bullet and just add a giant sensor to the phone, and focus on getting realistic high-quality shots that can go toe-to-toe with a dedicated camera like the Fujifilm X100VI. But with the focus on AI and the incremental hardware changes, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

For camera phones nowadays the most important features to check I'd say are : Low light photography (outdoor and indoor) ; zoom capability (video and picture, with text reading comparison for instance) ; action shot (being able to take non blurry images of fast moving people or objects like the Huawei Pura 70). daylight shots with harder conditions can be interesting if the accuracy of the lighting and colors is properly verified. Testing battery life for the average apps people use (KZbin/Google/Instagram/tiktok/camera app/whatsapp/email/phone). Having a fall test with case and without case a couple times. Having the phone in a humid room (next to a shower) and seeing if after a couple weeks there is any issue. How fast the generic Apps open and internet browsing is.
