Brilliant review of a great bike. I wanted one of these when they came out (yes another one of those) but they were miles out of my reach at the time. A twin always seemed like a better idea as power levels went up. Now you know that YZilla "needs" a friend with a 500cc twin developed from two 250 2T's in it... I would say twin 500's but lets be honest that sounds like a complete death trap.

Something different, nice video fella's. I enjoy V-twin 1000 aprilla and honda bikes more than inline 4 cylinders, but I suppose V-twin only have 2 cylinder 2 piston which are double size of inline 4cylinder. They should have never stopped 500cc 2bangas racing rather than stop and just allow 250&125 motocross until they add single cylinder 450&250 to compete against them eventually fading 2strokes out. Sux. Should all still be on real bikes that are exciting not just to win in straight lines spending triple the money. Avagud1

I worked at a dealership for a few years and we sold a handful of these in the US. We had one at the shop that I spent a good bit of time on and I absolutely LOVED it. When you said about the low COG I think you nailed it. The bike feels very planted. I got along with the handling of this bike more than any other MX bike around the 2012-2015 era. Also, the correct starting procedure is to kick it over slow once to "charge" the EFI system, then around TDC just push the kicker through the stroke. Once you get good at it it'll feel like you're just letting your boot's weight move the kicker and it'll fire right off!

The SXV 550 Supermoto Edition was the best sounding and absolutely fastest Supermoto I've ever had to race against in the German Championship. At one racetrack in the 2008 season (don't know the year exactly) it was measured with 202kmh on a long straight. No other bike was even close to that topspeed! I wish I bought one in 2007-2009 era, but it was 15.000€ for the bike, custom made to order for racing. It had a 2-in-1 underseat exhaust formed like the rear fender and I could listen to it idle for 24h every day. It was made by the Aprilia Racing Department on your order and made of SXV and MXV parts. The tank and fuel hoses were super-close to the exhaust and I remember one bike going up in flames at a race, when the fuel hose got in touch with the exhaust and caught fire.

Definitely ahead of their time for sure. I got the witness the short lived US offroad effort firsthand. My friend Ryan Echols was a factory rider and won several local hare scramble races on the 450. He piloted them in multiple GNCC pro class races, but the teething problems continued to pile up and they would not make a 3 hour race. Still really cool to see them up close ( and ride them) before anyone knew what they were.

Back to the 2 cylinder front: I love this 450, a shame it's flame went out... If you ever can get your hands on a Gilera 2cyl, which I once saw in the capable hands of dear departed Gaston Rahier, or even the Honda 125 twin, I'd be over the moon!! Talking AWD/2x2 bikes: there have been several projects on that front. I remember a Yamaha based Dakar project of 2 french twin brothers and a Maico based 2x2 bike that should be in the Sammy Miller museum in GB. Anyways: good hunting and I'll be quite happy to see you get your hands and camera on either 4 of the beforementioned. Thnx & greetz from T🐻 in NL.

Yup, great machine, I had one. I also had a rxv550 enduro that had SM wheels, I couldn't bring myself to put the dirt wheels on it and put it in the dirt because it was so clean and such great condition. Back to the mxv450, awesome machine, fast, handled so very well. I was not a performance rider, just a trail and occasional single track rider with my then young son. I did mount an OEM side stand(OEM parts were dirt cheap) which was helpful on the trails. Even with my efforts to make the bike more trail friendly it would never be tamed for the trails, so I sold it in favor of a ktm500 with a wide ratio transmission. It is a special machine.

I have a 250, a 350 and a 450 and had the chance to ride my friends 550 Aprilia on an SX track. Freaking blast. Just a touch of a throttle and it would clear jumps easily. Two or three steps up from a 450. That thing has like 70 hp! Not scary by any means, just smooth crazy power. Some 250´s are more nervous and twitchy down low. but living with one - no way. The e-start is a big pain, its from a freakin´scooter and can´t do the job. Kick start is a big +. I didn´t notice any problems with the controls or nothing, it fit nicely and couldn´t feel the weight really compared to an older 450. I do like the planted feel of even an older 450 single. It turns really nicely. I really liked it, just not the reality. If it would start ok and parts were available, it would be a really good all around bike!

The tank and airbox positions are similar to the 1985+ Yamaha F750 5-valve Genesis. The inline 4 engine was laid down at 45° from vertical, the carbs drew down vertically from the airbox where the gas tank is normally located, and the fuel was carried just above the transmission. Man, you could really hear the airbox HOWL when you ran it flat out at 145mph... The MXV450 is a really cool machine!

I hadn't realised the MX variant had retimed ignition intervals compared to the SXV and RXV - I thought it sounded odd, not at all like a V-Twin. In Harley / flat track parlance, this is often called "twingling" - not to be confused with actual Twingle, or split-single engines. It's just a case of rotating the cams in one cylinder head, no new parts needed - adjust fuel map and ignition timings, done! Supposedly, and originally, it was said to "improve grip". The more modern thinking is that it improves the "signal to noise ratio" regarding the rider's _sensation_ of available grip at the back tyre. The idea is the lumped torque pulses have a larger magnitude than the oscillating torque from the start-stop motion of the pistons, possibly better than a single cylinder of similar total capacity, given the shared inertia of the pistons in a twin-cylinder engine. Unfortunately, the narrow V angle undermines that effect somewhat, it would need to be much closer to 90° for the best result - like the MT07 in flat track racing. In MotoGP the understanding has caused a shift away from lumping power pulses and into minimising the oscillating piston torque - or "inertial torque" as Yamaha call it - the required piston phases naturally result in irregular firing. Aprilia also made a circuit racing variant, the RRV450, with short forks, the SXV swinging arm and a fairing. They were used for spec racing series; in the UK the series followed BSB around and was pretty entertaining. They're a bit like the old 250 two strokes.

It definitely doesn't sound like a V-twin, and it's PRECISELY due to the "big bang" cam timing. Assuming this is a 90-degree bank angle, with the cams as they are it would fire 0-90, then have 630 degrees of silence. Whereas if it had normal firing, it'd fire 0-270 then have 450 degrees of silence. Most V-twin and "crossplane" parallel twin ADVs do it the latter way. I suppose having less silence would make them more of a handful since they'd break traction more frequently and keep it broken more easily, but it gives it an AMAZING muscle-car like sound. Maybe do another vid where you retime the cams and compare the sounds?

I've owned the SXV, along with the Husky 510 and 570/610 (designed by the same guy as the Aprilia). The first downfall of this bike was that they released it before R&D was complete (because Aprilia needed the $ badly) and the engine had an oil sealing issue that required a massive 40 hour engine teardown to remedy, right off the showroom floor. Second issue was they they released it as a "street bike" (at least here in the states), even thought it was clearly a race only engine, requiring 500 mile service intervals. Meanwhile people rode them without service for thousands of miles (as you would a street bike) and they would blow up while under the warranty period, costing Aprilia massively. In the US, Aprilia pulled the bike from sale within a year, and basically tried to swipe the whole thing under the rug.

Did a little research on it and found out that these bikes require a ring job once you pass 5000 miles. Confirmed with dealer. Very expensive. Couldn't afford that every 5000 miles so I passed. Sure wish somebody would make a dual sport bike with similar engine performance with lower maintenance requirements, a 32" seat height, and around 9" of suspension travel front and rear.

I've always wanted to put a banshee engine in a dirt bike. What's the MSRP on this thing? I've always been impressed with aprillia's prices actually back in 2009 I bought an aprillia rs4 brand new for $13,999. Its the only time I ever strayed away from an R1 simply because I already had one. I won $22,000 gambling so I went and bought myself a present and gave the rest to my parents. Helped towards my dad's retirement. I still own it. It's my track bike it has full carbon fiber race fairings I actually made myself, the heads are ported and polished by me, titanium valvetrain, custom ground cams, titanium connecting rods, diamond billet pistons, super trick ohlins suspension, carbon fiber wheels, carbon ceramic front brake rotors, and so much more but i wont go on and on. While it took a lot to feel as comfortable on it as I am on my R1M, at 10/10ths the aprillia is more predictable than any older R1 I would be okay with converting to a strictly track bike. It makes 204 hp, weighs 341 lbs, and on limiter in 6th ur doing 221 mph but it's not about the straight line speed it's about the handling. It's unbelievable. Not quite as good as my brand new R1m but that thing costed me $26,000. It's by far and away the most miraculous motorcycle I've ever thrown a leg over. It's BLINDINGLY fast man. The way I have mine geared it does 121 mph in 2nd gear and gets there in just under 8 seconds. No launch control thats just rolling out and teasing the clutch just a touch after 60 feet. I got 209 mph in the standing half mile on pump gas. I also have a turbo 2006 R1 raven that makes 304 wheel hp. I left an H2 for dead like 2 weeks ago. It has a gtx35/44 and haltech elite 750. I fabricated my own small water to air intercooler, the turbo sits where the OE air box was and I retained the OE location dual under seat exhaust because, well lets face it because it's the coolest thing in the world. I won't get into everything I've done to it but, it's actually not as much as youd think. It has over 30,000 miles on it and has never had an issue other than breaking a couple chains and just SMOKING clutch friction plates.

I think the reliability thing is the cases how they are stuck together with shit sealant and taking out and splitting these was beyond most guys plus the cost of having it done. I seen an add the other day that a company called Panthera Motorsports has revamped the CR 500 platform making it a EFI 600cc with electric start. I have yet to see anything on it in video format but I can imagine that it has to put out some decent numbers over a 500 because if it doesn't I do not see its 7800 USD MSRP being justified. I am curious to see some wheel dyno numbers and then some wet weight figures in a modified 450 AF chassis. It could be a direct competitor for the Megladon if it is mapped and port timed properly. One thing that I found to be very interesting is that it uses a power valve system which means that it has a broader over-rev potential than the 500cc 2T engines of yesteryear. Something to keep an eye on if nothing else.

Talking about the RXV, the first series was agued with flaws, but from 2009 m.y. everything was tweaked. But by then the bad reputation was solid rock. I know for sure that some them are running greatly after 20k km without any engine rebuild needed.

next one could be a Beta, either the 2012 RR 450 cross country or keep an eye on the new 2024 RX300 2 stroke 😊 nice video, I was expecting those 2s though, the bike looked so stable in the rear when accelerating after every turn.

I do not ride motorcycles, I like the tech, and this engine really catches my attention. It is a light 450cc Twin cylinder engine that fits in a dirt bike. I like Twin cylinders over singles, and Tripples over Twins. A twin cylinder Dirt bike automatically catches my attention. I often imagine about a twin cylinder 250cc dirt bike because it does not exist.

Makes sense he would be quicker on the less grippy sections of the track on the Aprilia. V-twins get traction better in those situations and it was making up ground. That's why the XR750 Harley dominated American dirt track forever.

That's cool and I like Aprilia and all, but I'm glad that never became a thing. Dirt bikes are already getting too expensive, I can't imagine how much they would be if manufacturers decided to embrace twin cylinders and declare they are the future. Maybe it's just paranoia after seeing the 2 strokes creep up near the new high price of their 4 cycle counterparts.

I love these bikes, when I was a kid my friends dad was a bike dealer, I remember being there when he had 6 of them turn up brand new all still wrapped up. I was too young to ride one at the time and couldn't even touch the floor when I sat on one. I settled for an aprilia rx50 shortly after. its a shame these 450's and 550's suffered common engine issues and essentially went extinct. hard to find these bikes for sale.

Great video. As an Aprilia fan, it was cool to see how fast this thing still is. Had two rare bikes when I was youger, that would be great to see you test... a Husqvarna cr500 (liquid cooled) and a Cagiva WMX 500. The Cagiva I had supposedly had the 'desert' tank, so not sure exactly what it was made to race in, but it was super grunty.

Cool idea, not sure how the engine as a structure would hold up with Pro level guys jumping. But the twin engine should hold up nicely, two cylinders taking a beating instead of just one.

It sounds like the the 2000’s and early 10’s was a renascence for new concept bike design. With at least three being the Aprila 450, Husaberg 70 deg, and the Christini 2 wheel drive, (and maybe a resilient KLR for military use) we have hardly seen that kind of innovation since. KTM’s fuel injected 2 stroke is the most “new” in a long time, and is minor in comparison. What happened to innovation? Was it killed by the big manufacturers?
