As a cop in Jackson county Missouri, Kansas City, for 27 yrs I was involved in switching from the 38spl revolver to the 9mm and finally the 40 S&W. Two things that made our dept go to the 40. One was the FBI shootout in Florida where the failure of the 9mm to stop bad guys resulted in officer deaths and a shooting in Kansas City where the bad guy was shot 17 times including 3 times in the head. The 9mm failed to stop, in fact the guy lived and the only permanent injury was the loss of vision in one eye when the 9mm hollow point shattered on the ocular socket bone and pieces of lead penetrated and damaged the eye. As a firearms instructor and reviewing several officer involved shootings by interviews, on car and body cameras, and autopsies, I do not trust the 9mm. It gets its hitting power by speed not bullet mass. For a pistol I carry either the 40 or the 45. I prefer the 45. That being said. You should have hit the clay center of mass. Hitting high like you did gives a false impression of the 45s striking power

But with modern powder and bullet technology, the 9mm, 40, and 45 all penetrate about a foot and expand to about. 7 of an inch. One just relies on speed and on the other side of the spectrum it relies on weight but is a lot slower. That's why I'm confused because if you want more power, 40 and 45 are still really not enough. You didnt really solve the issue
@200130769
@200130769 2 жыл бұрын
@@briant7652 size doesnt matter as much as weight does. Especially when the bullet is going to expand anyways. The slower the bullet goes, the less it will expand. A heavier bullet wont slow down as fast as a lighter bullet will. But that also depends on the difference in speed from the 2. I compared my ak with my ar shooting half inch steel. The ak has a significantly heavier bullet than that ar. But the ar is doing a solid 1000fps faster. The 5.56 almost went through the half inch steel while the 7.62x39 just scratched the paint off.
@200130769
@200130769 2 жыл бұрын
@@briant7652 it does and it doesnt. There are smaller diameter bullets out there that are heavier than the bigger diameter ones. Like 10mm as an example out shines 45 in every possible way yet is smaller in diameter. It also does way more damage than the 45 and penetrates further. So that means that the bigger bullet doesnt always do more damage. My 270 has done more damage than my 308.

That looks like a lot of fun! Unfortunately, as others have pointed out, you didn't hit dead center with the .45 (as you did with the 9mm and .40) so the comparison is a bit invalid. With the 'wound cavity' made by the .40, it most likely would have been similar to the .45's. I wouldn't bet that on the 9mm since your center of mass shot didn't deform the top of the block as the .40 did. I think this 'test', along with many I've seen with ballistic gel, shows that, despite all the talk of better powder and cartridges, the .40 still makes a bigger wound channel than the 9mm (no matter what James Yeager says 😃) and the .45 is still on top.

Certainly, less clay above the impact cavity could cause the top to move more. I'm not sure whether that would change the the sideways expansion. Either way, thank you for a fun video. Ultimately, I believe that all three of those calibers will do the job in a self-defense situation if I do my job making a good self-defense shot. 460 is still the same bullet diameter as 45 acp (.452) They use the 460 designation so its more recognizeable/searchable but also indicating its much higher power.

After seeing comparison videos with .45 & .357 vs. 10mm, it's clear the .45 performs consistently, while the 10mm performs well with light bullets and not as well with heavier bullets, while the 9mm is also highly bullet-dependent. The .357 and 10mm can outperform the .45 ACP, but only when lighter-weight bullets are used. Low pressure rounds like the .45 ACP and .38 Special rely on relatively softer lead instead of high velocity to yield hollow point expansion. High pressure rounds (like 9mm, 10mm, or .357) when coupled with heavier hollow point bullets tend to underperform due to insufficient velocity relative to the hardness of the bullet. Using all hollow point rounds (including existing footage), let's see a comparison of 155g vs. 180g in 10mm, 125g vs 180g in .357, and 115g vs 147g in 9mm, and then run 185g vs 230g in .45 ACP & 115g vs 158g (JSWCHP) in .38 Spcl. to see what I'm talking about: barring poor bullet-design, the .38 & .45 will consistently perform regardless of bullet weight, while the high-pressure rounds are weight-dependent, offering more penetration at the expense of reliable expansion.

That's exactly why I use 45 plus peas with a lighter bullets and 45 super and 450 SMC with 185 rain 200 grain 220 and 230 grain I really like the 450 SMC because of its higher pressure around 32,000 and it gets the job done

Love the claymation, personality would like to see the test with the ammo from the same manufacturer i.e. Speer Gold Dot, Winchester PDX-1/Ranger, Federal HSTor Hornaday Critical Def/Duty. That way you could out to rest any doubts about one was a doubletap, or an SCHP or a no name brand. Like the SCHP use all Barnes. But with the hoarders and price gougers? Maybe before Jesus comes again. Can't even think about donating ammo/money Can't find anything on the shelves. Sad but keep up the good work!

The 45 hit much higher, so it had less than half the weight above it to lift/flip up. That's why it looks more "dramatic". The 45 had much less lifting to do.

Grew up in the US Army thinking a bigger round is almost always better. 30 years later having shot pretty much everything from 5.56 to 50 cal and everything in between, I still encourage you to carry a large a caliber as you comfortably will with as much capacity as your belt will sustain. Just me!

what would be interesting would be if you ran this same test, but prior to that you took all three clay blocks and dumped them into a cement mixer and add about 1 gallon of water to the mix and then reshape all three blocks. this would more roughly approximate the human body tissue as the clay blocks would have a higher percentage of water and be more accurate representation of what each round would do to human tissue. that would be a true test of the firearm, the bullet and the caliber. hope this helps.
